Shabbos as unclothed revelation of Hashem's Name

On the pasuk (verse): "Only My Shabbosos you shall keep…"

The Sefas Emes opens with the verse that singles out Shabbos even in the midst of the command to build the Mishkan, signaling that something about Shabbos stands above the work of building.

And Rashi explains: to exclude Shabbos from the work of the Mishkan.

Rashi teaches that even the holy labor of constructing the Mishkan does not override Shabbos — Shabbos is set apart from all melachah (labor).

For behold, regarding the work of the Mishkan, Chazal (our Sages) said that Betzalel knew how to combine the letters with which heaven and earth were created.

The building of the Mishkan was not mere craftsmanship; Betzalel worked with the very creative letters of the Torah through which the world was formed.

For everything was created through the Torah, and there are letters in heaven and in earth — this is the meaning of "the heavens": the letters from alef to tav are in the heavens, "and the earth."

All of creation is woven from the letters of the Torah; the word "es" (אֵת), spanning alef to tav, hints that the full alphabet of creative letters resides within heaven and earth alike.

And the work of the Mishkan is to join what is on earth to its root in heaven.

The purpose of the Mishkan's labor is to reconnect every earthly thing back to its heavenly source, reuniting the lower letters with their upper origin.

And then the Name of Heaven rests upon them.

Once the earthly is bound to its heavenly root, Hashem's Name comes to dwell upon those physical objects.

But the main purpose of all these constructions and letter-combinations is to draw down the letters of His Name, may He be blessed — which is the penimiyus (inner dimension) of the Torah, all of which is the Names of the Holy One, Blessed is He.

Beyond joining heaven and earth, the deepest goal is to reveal Hashem's own Name, for the inner essence of the entire Torah is nothing other than the Names of Hashem.

As in the matter that is said: "And they shall make for Me a Mikdash (Sanctuary), and I will dwell among them." (Shemos 25:8)

The verse promises that through building the Mikdash, Hashem's Presence will dwell within Bnei Yisrael themselves — the true indwelling is the revelation of His Name.

And this is the aspect of Shabbos — the Name of the Holy One, Blessed is He — "peace," the King to whom peace belongs.

Shabbos itself is a Name of Hashem and is identified with shalom (peace, wholeness), for Hashem is the King whose very being is shalom.

The meaning of "peace": that within a single letter of Hashem's Name is found all wholeness.

Shalom denotes completeness — and complete perfection is contained in even one letter of His Name, which is the source of all wholeness.

As it is written: "He makes peace in His heights." (Iyov 25:2)

Hashem brings harmony among the highest spiritual forces, demonstrating that shalom is the unifying wholeness that flows from Him.

It is a letter within His host.

Each letter is like a member of Hashem's heavenly legion; when it appears, it carries the unifying power of His Name.

When an illumination from His Name, may He be blessed, is revealed, everything becomes complete.

The moment even a glimmer of Hashem's Name shines forth, all of creation reaches its fullness and perfection.

And this is the "sign" of Shabbos.

Shabbos is called an "os" (a sign/letter) precisely because it is the revelation of a letter of Hashem's Name that completes everything.

For it is written: "It is a sign."

The Torah itself calls Shabbos an "os," underscoring that it functions as a revealed letter of the Divine Name.

For on it one rests from all labor.

Because all is already completed through Shabbos, one ceases from every melachah — there is nothing left to build or fix.

As it is said: that all your work should be regarded as done.

Chazal teach that on Shabbos one should feel as if all one's work is already accomplished, reflecting the completeness that Shabbos brings.

For with the revelation of the sign of Shabbos, everything is made complete.

The appearance of Shabbos's holy "os" brings all of creation to its perfected state.

Therefore on Shabbos one does not need all the constructions and letter-combinations, for everything is completed through Shabbos.

The weekday labor of building and combining letters (as in the Mishkan) is unnecessary on Shabbos, since Shabbos itself finishes the work directly.

And in truth, all the work of the Mishkan and the joining of heaven and earth are entirely the aspect of a ladder by which to ascend to the root.

All this building is merely a means — a ladder — whose only purpose is to bring one up to the source; it is not an end in itself.

And when one merits the ascent, one no longer needs the ladder.

Once a person has actually risen to the source — which is what happens on Shabbos — the instrument of ascent becomes superfluous.

And likewise, a person's avodah (service) in this world is a preparation for olam haba (the World to Come).

Just as the Mishkan's labor is a ladder, so too all our toil in this world is only a preparation for the ultimate goal of the next world.

And the purpose of olam haba is the bittul (nullification) of all of this world.

The endpoint of the World to Come is the complete self-nullification of the physical world before its Divine source.

And likewise is the aspect of the neshamah (soul) within the body.

The same pattern of body-as-ladder and soul-as-goal plays out within the human being himself.

And surely the neshamah too is sustained through the body's nourishment.

The soul depends, in this world, on the body being fed and kept alive — the physical is genuinely necessary as a support.

And all of a person's bodily deeds serve to sustain the nefesh (soul) within him.

Everything a person does physically ultimately functions to keep his inner soul alive and connected.

But the purpose of the soul's illumination is the bittul of the body and its transformation.

The true aim is that the soul's light should so shine that the body nullifies itself and is transformed into something spiritual.

And all of Hashem's handiwork — in "world, year, and soul" (space, time, and being) — follows one and the same pattern.

The threefold framework of creation — space (olam), time (shanah), and soul (nefesh) — all express the identical principle of an outer means leading to an inner goal.

For the six days of work are "time," as it is written: "In six days He made…"

In the dimension of time, the six weekdays correspond to the realm of ordinary time within which creation unfolds.

It emerges that time consists of only six days.

Properly speaking, the category of "time" encompasses just the six days of doing and making.

But Shabbos is not within the category of time.

Shabbos transcends ordinary time; it belongs to a higher, timeless dimension.

And it is the neshamah to the six days, as is stated in the Zohar HaKadosh: "the day of souls and not of bodies."

Just as the soul animates the body, Shabbos is the inner soul of the weekdays — a day of pure spirituality, not of physical doing.

Therefore the weekdays are a preparation for Shabbos, and "in six days He made the heavens and the earth."

The six days of physical creation exist only to lead up to Shabbos, which is their inner purpose and culmination.

But on the seventh day the illumination of His Name, may He be blessed, is revealed without being clothed in the workings of nature and creation.

On Shabbos, Hashem's light shines openly, no longer hidden inside the garments of the natural world.

And it is a foretaste of olam haba, as our Sages of blessed memory said.

Because of this unclothed revelation, Shabbos is a sample of the World to Come, as Chazal describe it.

And it is stated that in the future to come, Hashem will remove the sun from its sheath: the tzaddikim (righteous) will be healed and the wicked will be judged — see there — based on the pasuk: "And there shall shine for you who fear My Name." (Malachi 3:20)

Chazal teach that in the future the sun's full power will be unsheathed; the same revealed light heals the righteous and judges the wicked, hinting at the unclothed light of Shabbos and the World to Come.

And the hint is to the revelation of the Torah.

The "sun from its sheath" alludes to the day when the Torah's inner essence will be revealed without any covering.

For in this world it is clothed in the letter-combinations before us and in physical mitzvos.

Presently the Torah is garbed in the words and letters we read and in mitzvos performed with physical objects, concealing its inner light.

But in the future the very essence of the Torah will be revealed — that it is the Names of Hashem.

Ultimately the Torah's true nature will be unveiled: it is wholly composed of the Names of Hashem.

And on Shabbos there is a taste of this.

Shabbos already gives us a partial sample of that future revelation of the Torah's essence.

And this is the hint of the public Torah reading on Shabbos.

Reading the Torah on Shabbos expresses this special revelation of the Torah's inner light on the holy day.

And this is the meaning of excluding Shabbos from the work of the Mishkan — that Shabbos is the revelation of Hashem's Name without sheath or garment.

This is why Shabbos overrides the Mishkan's labor: the Mishkan reveals the Name through physical garments, while Shabbos reveals that very Name with no covering at all.

And behold, the passage of Shabbos is placed adjacent to "And He gave to Moshe…"

The Torah juxtaposes the section about Shabbos with the giving of the Luchos to Moshe, inviting us to connect the two.

The first Luchos (Tablets).

Specifically, the adjacency points to the first set of Tablets, which carried a uniquely elevated revelation.

To hint that on Shabbos a taste of the first Luchos is revealed.

The juxtaposition teaches that Shabbos offers a glimpse of the lofty, unblemished light of the first Tablets.

And in both of them there is the aspect of a gift, as Chazal said: "I have a good gift…"

Both Shabbos and the first Luchos share the quality of being a gift, as in the teaching that Hashem said, "I have a good gift in My treasury, and its name is Shabbos."

And so too: "Moshe shall rejoice in the gift of his portion."

The Shabbos liturgy describes Moshe rejoicing in his "gift," underscoring that both Shabbos and the Torah came as a present from Hashem.

As it is written: "And He gave to Moshe."

The word "gave" itself signals that the Luchos were bestowed upon Moshe as a gift.

And it is stated in the Midrash that after all the toil of forty days, Moshe was still unable to receive the Torah until it was given to him as a gift.

Even after Moshe labored forty days, the Torah could not be acquired by effort alone; in the end it had to be granted to him as a free gift from Above.

And as I wrote elsewhere in the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory, the explanation of "I toiled and I found — believe it": that through the toil one merits a finding and a gift.

Citing the Chiddushei HaRim, the Sefas Emes explains the maamar "yagati u'matzasi" — toil leads not to a calculated result but to a "find," a gift that comes davka because one labored.

For it is not within human intellect.

The acquisition of Torah ultimately surpasses human reasoning; it cannot be earned purely by one's own mind.

Rather, the Holy One, Blessed is He, gives the Torah as a gift in accordance with a person's toil.

Hashem grants the Torah as a free gift, yet measures that gift precisely to the effort the person invested.

And so it is with the aspect of Shabbos — a good gift.

Shabbos follows the same principle: it too is a gift earned through the toil of the six weekdays.

For it is stated in the Midrash: "A good acquisition I have given you" — there is a purchase where one does not know what he has acquired, but from the broker's fee it becomes known.

The Midrash teaches that Torah is so precious a "purchase" that we cannot fully grasp what we received; we glimpse its value only indirectly, through the "broker's commission."

As it is written: "And Moshe did not know that the skin of his face had become radiant…"

Moshe himself did not perceive his own shining face — this radiance is the "broker's fee" that reveals, from the outside, the priceless value of the Torah he received.

The explanation: that surely the acquisition — the Torah that Hashem gave us.

The Sefas Emes begins to explain how this precious "purchase," the Torah given to us, will yet become fully knowable.

Surely the acquisition will be revealed to us.

Eventually we will come to recognize the true worth of the Torah we have been given.

But in this world the physicality of the body and the body's sensations are an obstacle, so that one cannot know and grasp the essence of the Torah.

The materiality of the body blocks us from directly perceiving the Torah's inner essence while we are in this world.

But for this reason it is called "a good acquisition," for the Torah itself teaches us how to draw near and to know — how to separate from physicality and to approach its comprehension — as it is said of Moshe that "the skin of his face shone" when He spoke with him, for the physicality was stripped from him, and he went out from "garments of skin" to "garments of light," grasping the essence of the Torah as it is Above, without garment or sheath.

The Torah is "good" because it itself shows us how to shed physicality and draw close to its inner light; Moshe is the model — speaking with Hashem stripped him of materiality, transforming his "kosnos or" (garments of skin) into "kosnos or" (garments of light), so he apprehended the Torah in its naked, supernal form.

And a hint to the matter: "a mitzvah is a lamp" is the aspect of "garments of skin."

The pasuk "ner mitzvah" (a mitzvah is a lamp) corresponds to the garments of skin — the physical mitzvos that clothe the Divine light in this world.

For it is stated in the Zohar HaKadosh that "mitzvah" contains the Name Havayah (the Tetragrammaton) in reversed letters: yud-mem, heh-tzadi.

The Zohar reveals that the word "mitzvah" conceals Hashem's four-letter Name through the at-bash letter substitution, so even a physical mitzvah secretly carries the Divine Name within it.

And this is the revelation of His Name, may He be blessed, by means of the mitzvos performed physically.

Through physical mitzvos, Hashem's Name is revealed — but indirectly, as if encoded.

Therefore it is in transposed letters.

Because the revelation through physical mitzvos is concealed, the Name appears only in substituted, hidden letters rather than openly.

And "or" (skin) has the gematria (numerical value) of "ner" plus five (nun-reish, plus the letter heh).

The Sefas Emes notes a numerical hint linking "or" (skin), "ner" (lamp), and the letter heh of the Divine Name, tying the garments of skin to the lamp of mitzvah and to Hashem's Name.

And this is "garments of skin" — the clothing within the 248 mitzvos to illuminate the 248 limbs of the body.

The garments of skin are the 248 positive mitzvos through which Divine light is brought into the body's 248 limbs, infusing physicality with holiness.

And likewise that which is written: "and he placed a veil (masveh) upon his face."

The same idea appears in Moshe placing a veil over his radiant face — the veil represents the garment that contains and conceals the Divine light.

For "masveh" (veil) is "mitzvah."

The word for the veil shares the same letters as "mitzvah," linking Moshe's veil to the concept of mitzvos as garments for the Divine light.

For the letters samech and tzadi interchange in the group zayin-samech-shin-reish-tzadi.

By the rules of letter-interchange (the "zsshr"tz" group of phonetically related letters), samech and tzadi swap, so "masveh" transforms into "mitzvah."

And just as Moshe Rabbeinu, when He spoke with him, had every garment stripped from him and the skin of his face shone.

When Hashem spoke with Moshe, all his concealing garments fell away and his face radiated the unmediated Divine light.

So too, everyone who occupies himself with Torah merits to purify his soul and to draw near to the light of the Torah, in accordance with his toil in Torah.

Anyone toiling in Torah can refine his soul and approach the Torah's inner light, in proportion to the effort he invests — Moshe is the supreme example of a universal possibility.

And this is what Chazal said: "You have no free man except one who occupies himself with Torah," as it is said: "engraved (charus) upon the Tablets."

True freedom belongs to one immersed in Torah; the Sages read "charus" (engraved) as "cheirus" (freedom), since Torah liberates a person from enslavement to the body.

And Moshe Rabbeinu emerged from the general rule to teach about the entire general rule.

Moshe's unique radiance is not an exception but a model: what happened openly to him reveals the potential latent in every Torah Jew.

And likewise, all the mitzvos serve to refine the materiality of the body.

Every mitzvah works to purify the coarse physicality of the body, drawing it toward holiness.

As Chazal said: "Hashem wished to grant merit to Yisrael…"

Chazal teach that Hashem gave abundant mitzvos in order to confer merit upon Bnei Yisrael and refine them.

And this is in the aspect of "a mitzvah is a lamp," as stated above.

This refinement through mitzvos belongs to the earlier category of "ner mitzvah" — the lamp of mitzvah, the garment of light clothed in physical deeds.

But Shabbos, which is a foretaste of olam haba, is in the aspect of "the light of Torah," as Chazal said: "The radiance of a person's face on Shabbos is not comparable to the weekdays, and even upon an am ha'aretz (unlearned person) the awe of Shabbos rests."

Whereas mitzvos are the lamp of mitzvah, Shabbos is the higher "or Torah" (light of Torah) itself; its light so shines that everyone's face glows differently on Shabbos, and even the simplest Jew feels its awe.

And it is a taste of what they said: "And they shall see… the peoples of the earth, that the Name of Hashem is called upon you."

The radiance of Shabbos foreshadows the future when all nations will recognize that Hashem's Name rests upon Bnei Yisrael.

And this will be fulfilled in the future to come — that which Moshe Rabbeinu merited in this world, as it is written: "and they were afraid to approach him."

What Moshe attained already in this world — a radiance that made people awestruck — will become the universal experience of Bnei Yisrael in the future.

And all this is a gift of Elokim (Hashem).

This entire radiance and elevation is not a human achievement but a Divine gift.

And this is the meaning of: "to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."

The verse stresses that our sanctification comes from Hashem; the holiness of Shabbos is a gift He bestows, not something we generate on our own.

And this is the matter of siyata diShmaya (Heavenly assistance), as Chazal said: "One who comes to purify himself is assisted."

The "gift" operates through siyata diShmaya: when a person initiates the effort to purify himself, Heaven grants him aid beyond his own power.

And Bnei Yisrael are the ones who come to purify themselves and merit siyata diShmaya.

Bnei Yisrael are defined as those who strive for purity, and therefore they are the recipients of this Heavenly assistance.

And this is truly the ultimate purpose.

Receiving this Divine gift and assistance is itself the very goal of all our avodah.

For "what advantage has a man in all his toil that he toils under the sun?" (Koheles 1:3)

Koheles asks what lasting gain there is in earthly toil "under the sun" — within the realm of nature and time alone, none.

And Chazal said: above the sun he does have an advantage.

Chazal answer that while toil "under the sun" yields no advantage, toil that reaches "above the sun" — in the spiritual realm — does bear lasting fruit.

In his ordinary toil there is no [advantage in his] toil, but there is gain when one toils in the toil of Torah.

Physical toil under the sun is ultimately fruitless, but toil invested in Torah — "amelah shel Torah" — endures and rises above the sun.

And it is all one, for the main thing is to merit the gift of Elokim from Above.

Both ideas converge: the essential aim of all toil is to become worthy of receiving Hashem's gift from Above.

And this is the aspect of Shabbos.

Shabbos embodies precisely this — the gift from Above that crowns and completes all our weekday toil.

And this is "Only My Shabbosos you shall keep" — to look forward to the salvation of Hashem, which is the essence of wholeness.

Guarding Shabbos means awaiting Hashem's salvation; the readiness to receive His gift, rather than relying on our own labor, is the true completeness.

And "it is a sign between Me and you."

Shabbos is the unique sign of the bond between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael, testifying to their special relationship.

For there is no one able to merit siyata diShmaya above nature except Bnei Yisrael, who have the power to draw down help and holiness from above nature.

Only Bnei Yisrael possess the capacity to receive supernatural Divine assistance, drawing holiness from beyond the natural order.

And Shabbos is testimony to this, for it is a good gift from His treasury, as stated above.

Shabbos, the precious gift drawn from Hashem's hidden treasury, serves as the proof that Bnei Yisrael can receive holiness from above nature.

And it is written: "And you shall remember that you were a slave… therefore He commanded you… to observe… the Shabbos."

The Torah ties Shabbos to the memory of slavery in Mitzrayim, presenting Shabbos observance as flowing from the redemption.

For it is testimony to the Exodus from Mitzrayim, that Bnei Yisrael merited the aspect of freedom — not to be enslaved to the body.

Shabbos attests to the deeper freedom won at the Exodus: liberation from servitude not merely to Pharaoh but to one's own physical body.

For this is the essence of freedom.

True freedom is precisely this independence from the demands and limitations of the body.

And therefore Shabbos belongs to them.

Because Bnei Yisrael attained this inner freedom, Shabbos — the day of transcending the body — is uniquely theirs.

And it is written: "It is a sign forever."

Shabbos is an eternal sign, pointing to the permanent, supernatural way in which Hashem leads Bnei Yisrael.

For in truth Hashem leads Bnei Yisrael always above nature and above the governance of all other creatures.

Hashem conducts Bnei Yisrael by a supernatural providence, distinct from the natural order governing the rest of creation.

Only that on the weekdays it is hidden, and on Shabbos it is revealed.

This supernatural guidance operates constantly but is concealed during the week; on Shabbos it becomes openly visible.

And Shabbos emerged from the general rule to teach about the entire general rule.

Shabbos is not an isolated exception; its revealed providence discloses the hidden truth operating throughout all the days of the week.

And we say: "for Your miracles that are with us every day."

Our daily prayers acknowledge that Hashem's miracles accompany us every single day, though hidden within nature.

And likewise: "Into Your hand I entrust my spirit…"

We daily place our spirit in Hashem's hand, expressing our reliance on His supernatural care rather than on the natural order.

For although nature runs according to its course, a Jew must draw himself after the higher governance.

Even while nature follows its ordinary patterns, the Jew is called to attach himself to Hashem's higher, supernatural providence.

And concerning this it is written: "And you shall choose life."

Choosing life means choosing to bind oneself to the higher Divine guidance rather than to mere nature.

And Hashem in His goodness renews each day the act of creation, as is stated in the Zohar HaKadosh that a holiness passes over us continually — for our sake something of the hidden light (or ha'ganuz) is revealed each day, so that Bnei Yisrael may merit to cleave to the penimiyus of creation; and this is the illumination that spreads from Shabbos into all the weekdays.

Hashem constantly renews creation and lets a measure of the concealed primordial light shine each day, enabling Bnei Yisrael to cling to creation's inner core — and this daily light is really Shabbos's radiance extending into the week.

For Shabbos sustains all the days, only in a clothed manner.

Shabbos is the life-source of the whole week, but during the weekdays its light is garbed and hidden within nature.

But to Bnei Yisrael it is said: "Only My Shabbosos you shall keep."

To Bnei Yisrael the verse offers something higher than the clothed weekday light — direct access to Shabbos itself.

The meaning of "only": without garment.

The word "ach" (only) signals the unclothed Shabbos light — the Divine radiance received without any concealing garment.

Only in the very essence of Shabbos.

Bnei Yisrael can grasp the essence of Shabbos itself, the unmediated light, not merely its garbed weekday extension.

And in truth this depends on a person's avodah — to become stripped of physicality; and according to his refinement it is said: "as water reflects face to face."

Receiving the unclothed Shabbos light depends on one's own work of detaching from physicality; the heavenly light is mirrored back to a person in exact proportion to how he refines himself.

And therefore Shabbos is a remembrance of the Exodus from Mitzrayim, for it is testimony that Bnei Yisrael are free people and merit the Shabbos.

Shabbos recalls the Exodus because that freedom from bodily servitude is exactly what enables Bnei Yisrael to receive the unclothed light of Shabbos.

And Hashem, at the Exodus from Mitzrayim, changed all of nature for the sake of Bnei Yisrael.

At the Exodus Hashem overturned the natural order on behalf of Bnei Yisrael, demonstrating that He leads them above nature.

And this testimony applies in every detail: that whatever siyata diShmaya one merits is true testimony to a person's avodah for the sake of His Name, may He be blessed — and it is all one matter, as has been stated.

Every instance of Heavenly assistance one receives is itself living proof of the sincere avodah the person performed for Hashem's sake; effort and gift, Shabbos and Exodus, are all one unified idea.

Summary: The Sefas Emes explains why Shabbos is excluded from the labor of the Mishkan: all the world's building and letter-combinations are merely a ladder to reach the source, but Shabbos is the direct, unclothed revelation of Hashem's Name — the soul and inner purpose of the six weekdays, a foretaste of olam haba and of the first Luchos. Like the Torah given to Moshe, Shabbos is a "good gift" that comes through human toil yet ultimately as siyata diShmaya from Above; it testifies, like the Exodus, that Bnei Yisrael are free of the body and led by a supernatural providence, and that all our avodah of stripping away physicality earns the reflected light of Hashem received without any garment.
