Daily Redemption and Divine Provision
Geulah · Parnassah · Shefa · Avot · Devekut
In the Midrash: “The shepherd who sustains me, the redeeming angel,” it compares redemption to sustenance — just as sustenance is daily, etc.
The Sefat Emet notes that the Midrash links daily redemption to daily sustenance, establishing a parallel between the two divine processes.
Sustenance comes directly from the Holy One, blessed be He, while redemption comes through an angel.
Sustenance is an overflow from God Himself, whereas redemption involves an intermediary — an angelic force.
For God renews each day the act of Creation and the entire sustenance of the day.
The ongoing renewal of creation includes the daily life-force that feeds the world.
And when the divine flow enters this world, it becomes clothed in nature — this is through an angel — and therefore daily redemption is needed.
Because the divine energy is filtered through natural processes (via angels), it requires continual purification.
For when the flow arrives in this garment of nature, waste and mixtures attach to it, and it needs redemption and refinement to extract nourishment from waste.
The Sefat Emet describes the spiritual task of separating holy vitality from the impurities that cling to it in the physical realm.
The essential purpose of blessing is to be attached to the root.
The highest form of blessing is connection to the divine source from which all flow originates.
And thus it says, “May my name and the name of my fathers be called upon them,” for this is the purpose of human service.
Yaakov wishes his descendants to be rooted in the spiritual legacy of the patriarchs.
As it is taught: A person must say, “When will my deeds reach the deeds of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?”
The aspiration toward the patriarchs’ level is itself a form of spiritual attachment.
And Jacob, peace be upon him, blessed the youths to have attachment to the Fathers.
His blessing was essentially a transmission of spiritual connection.
And so too with the blessing of all the tribes, as it is written: “And Jacob called his sons.”
The act of calling indicates drawing them into intimacy and connection.
Calling is an expression of affection and attachment.
The Sefat Emet emphasizes the relational nature of blessing.
And our sages said: The vessel that holds blessing is peace.
Peace is the inner condition that allows blessing to be received.
And peace means that there is attachment and connection all the way to the root.
True peace is spiritual alignment with the divine source.
And the Patriarchs are the root of all.
All spiritual blessing emerges from the foundational lives of the patriarchs.
Therefore it says of Shabbat, “And He blessed…” for the seventh day — because on Shabbat everything ascends to the root and can receive the blessing.
Shabbat elevates creation to its source, enabling the reception of pure, untainted divine flow.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that sustenance and redemption are daily processes because divine flow enters the world through layers that require continual refinement. The goal of blessing is attachment to the root, embodied by the patriarchs. Shabbat uniquely restores this connection, allowing pure blessing to be received.
