Three Crowns, Three Festivals, and Shabbos Above

Concerning the matter of the placement of the passage of the lamps and the lechem ha-panim (showbread) after the festivals.

The Sefas Emes asks why the Torah, after listing the Yamim Tovim, immediately discusses the Menorah's lamps and the showbread. He will show that these embody the same blessings the festivals draw down.

It appears that through the festivals too the blessings and the flow of shefa are drawn down, just as they are drawn down through the oil and the loaves.

The same divine abundance (shefa) channeled through the Menorah's oil and the showbread loaves is also drawn down through the three festivals.

For behold, there were three items in the Heichal.

Three vessels stood in the Sanctuary, which will correspond to three crowns and three blessings.

The Table, the Menorah, and the Incense Altar.

These are the three: the Shulchan (Table) for the showbread, the Menorah, and the Mizbeach HaKetores (Incense Altar).

And they are the aspect of the three crowns: the crown of Torah, of kehunah (priesthood), and of malchus (kingship).

The three vessels correspond to the three "crowns" (kesarim) of which Chazal speak: Torah, priesthood, and kingship.

And they are the three blessings of Birkas Kohanim.

These same three correspond to the three verses of the Priestly Blessing.

"May He bless you" is the aspect of the Table of kings, and the twelve loaves would draw down the blessing to the whole world.

"Yevarechecha" corresponds to the Shulchan — the "table of kings" — the source of material blessing; the twelve showbread loaves channeled that blessing of plenty to all the world. This is malchus.

And in the Menorah is "May Hashem make His face shine," which is the aspect of the Torah, that is called "light."

"Ya'er Hashem panav" corresponds to the Menorah and to the crown of Torah, since Torah is called "ohr" (light): "ki ner mitzvah v'Torah ohr."

And the incense is the crown of kehunah, the aspect of the lifting of the hands (in blessing) and the spreading of the "sukkah of peace," the Clouds of Glory — and the incense are all one matter.

The Ketores corresponds to the crown of priesthood — the kohanim raising their hands in blessing, the "sukkas shalom" of peace, and the Ananei HaKavod. The Sefas Emes notes these are all one idea: the protective, peace-bringing dimension of kehunah.

And likewise through the three festivals these three blessings are drawn down: for on Pesach Bnei Yisrael entered to become servants of Hashem, to accept the yoke of His kingship — therefore it is the New Year for the kings of Yisrael — and it is the blessing of wealth.

Pesach corresponds to malchus: there Bnei Yisrael became Hashem's servants under His kingship; halachically Nisan is the New Year for Jewish kings. It carries the blessing of plenty — the dimension of the Shulchan and "Yevarechecha."

Therefore Pesach is connected to the grain, and the mitzvos of Pesach are in the eating of the korban Pesach and matzah.

Fittingly, Pesach centers on physical sustenance — the new grain and the eating of the Pesach and matzah — matching its theme of material blessing.

And the festival of Shavuos is the receiving of the Torah, the aspect of the Menorah of seven branches, corresponding to the seven weeks for which the festival is named.

Shavuos corresponds to the crown of Torah and the seven-branched Menorah; its seven weeks of Sefirah parallel the Menorah's seven lamps of "light."

And Sukkos is the crown of kehunah — the Clouds (of Glory), in the merit of Aharon — as above.

Sukkos corresponds to the crown of priesthood and the Incense Altar: the Ananei HaKavod came in the merit of Aharon HaKohen.

And it is brought, "the crown of a good name rises above them all" — this is the aspect of Shabbos, which includes and rises above all three aspects mentioned above.

Avos teaches that above the three crowns is the "keser shem tov," the crown of a good name. The Sefas Emes identifies this with Shabbos, which encompasses and transcends Torah, kehunah, and malchus.

And it is called a "good name" because Shabbos is called "testimony," as it is written, "between Me and Bnei Yisrael it is a sign (os)."

Shabbos is "sahadusa" (testimony) and an "os" between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael (Shemos 31:17); a name is testimony to who one is, hence "keser shem tov."

And it contains the three blessings mentioned above; therefore there are three Shabbos meals corresponding to those three blessings.

Because Shabbos includes all three crowns/blessings, we eat three seudos on it, one corresponding to each.

And the mitzvah of arranging the showbread was two stacks of six loaves each.

Returning to the lechem ha-panim: it was set in two rows of six, twelve loaves in all.

And it may allude to the six days of the work-week.

The two sixes hint at the six weekdays.

For all of them have their root in Shabbos.

All six weekdays draw their vitality from, and are rooted in, Shabbos.

And also to multiply the shefa in the upper and lower realms, as it is written, "I will answer the heavens, and they will answer the earth" (Hoshea 2:23), and it is written, "In six days Hashem made the heavens and the earth" — so there are six and six.

The two rows of six also hint at the parallel flow of shefa above and below: six "upper" and six "lower," the heavens answering to and feeding the earth, all corresponding to the six days of Creation.

And see the Zohar Tikkunim at the beginning of Megillas Rus.

The Sefas Emes refers the reader to a related discussion in the Zohar on the start of Rus.

And it is written, "On the day of Shabbos, on the day of Shabbos he shall arrange it" — this is like "Shabbos in its Shabbos."

The showbread is arranged "on the day of Shabbos" (Vayikra 24:8). The doubled phrasing, like "Shabbos b'Shabbato," hints that there is a higher Shabbos within Shabbos.

For there is a Shabbos above Shabbos, as it is written, "It is Shabbos to Hashem in all your dwelling places" — for the essence of Shabbos is in the tzaddikim above, in all the places of their dwelling, and every mitzvah of Shabbos is doubled, as is brought in the Midrashim.

There are ascending levels of Shabbos. "Shabbos la-Hashem b'chol moshvoseichem" hints that its root is in the tzaddikim Above. This is why Shabbos's mitzvos come in doubled form (two loaves of lechem mishneh, "zachor" and "shamor," etc.).

Through Shabbos raising and joining a lower level to a higher one — and these ascents have no end. And similar to this Chazal expounded in many places, where a doubled expression is written, "you shall surely give (nason titein)," even a hundred times...

Shabbos continually lifts each lower rung to a higher one, an ascent without limit. The doubled language of Shabbos expresses this endlessness — just as Chazal derive from doubled verbs like "nason titein" (Devarim 15:10) that the act repeats "even a hundred times."

Summary: The three vessels of the Heichal — Table, Menorah, and Incense Altar — embody the three crowns (malchus, Torah, kehunah), the three verses of Birkas Kohanim, and the three festivals (Pesach, Shavuos, Sukkos), each drawing down its own blessing. Above them all is Shabbos, the "keser shem tov" that includes and transcends the three, marked by its doubled mitzvos and three meals. The two rows of six showbread loaves hint at the six weekdays rooted in Shabbos and the parallel flow of shefa above and below — an unending ascent by which Shabbos lifts every lower level to a higher one.
