Shabbos kedushah across world, year, and soul
Shabbos · neshamah yeseirah · moadim · olam shanah nefesh · kedushah
Regarding the fact that Shabbos is stated among the festivals.
The Sefas Emes asks why Shabbos is listed together with the moadim in Parshas Emor, since it seems to be of a different category.
One may say that, beyond the fact that Shabbos is "fixed and established," Bnei Yisrael nevertheless have a portion in the holiness of Shabbos that depends on them, as it is written, "Remember… the Shabbos day to sanctify it" — implying that the holiness of Shabbos depends on them; and it is written, "for on it He rested."
Although Shabbos's kedushah is fixed by Hashem (independent of any human declaration, unlike the moadim that depend on Beis Din's calendar), there is still a dimension entrusted to Bnei Yisrael — "to sanctify it" — showing that they too add to its holiness.
And in "Shamor" (Keep) it is written, "for you were a servant," and likewise we say "a remembrance of the exodus from Mitzrayim."
The second version of the commandment (in Devarim) grounds Shabbos in Yetzias Mitzrayim — a dimension tied to Bnei Yisrael's own history, which we recall in Kiddush.
And from this aspect, Shabbos is uniquely Bnei Yisrael's.
Through the dimension of the exodus, Shabbos becomes specifically the inheritance of Bnei Yisrael.
And in Kiddush we say: "a remembrance of the act of creation," "first among the holy convocations," "a remembrance of the exodus from Mitzrayim."
The three phrases of Kiddush each express a different facet of Shabbos's holiness, which the Sefas Emes will now map onto a threefold framework.
These three are the aspects of "world, year, soul" (olam, shanah, nefesh).
The three phrases correspond to the classic triad of space (olam/world), time (shanah/year), and being (nefesh/soul) — the three dimensions of all reality.
And in all of them the holiness of Shabbos is found: that which is fixed and established and gives endurance to all of creation — this is "a remembrance of the act of creation."
In the dimension of "world" (space), Shabbos is the fixed kedushah that sustains all of creation — corresponding to "zikaron le-maaseh bereishis."
And it bestows holiness within times — and therefore Shabbos precedes the festivals, for by virtue of the holiness of Shabbos existing within time, Bnei Yisrael merited that further festivals be added to them; and this is "first among the holy convocations."
In the dimension of "year" (time), Shabbos's holiness is the source from which the moadim derive. Because Shabbos sanctified time, Bnei Yisrael could then add the festivals — hence "first among the holy convocations."
And in the "soul," it is the neshamah yeseirah (additional soul) that descends to Bnei Yisrael on Shabbos.
In the dimension of "soul," Shabbos's holiness manifests as the extra soul given to each Jew on Shabbos.
And this is the aspect of "soul" — for the radiance of a person's face on Shabbos is not comparable to that of a weekday.
The neshamah yeseirah literally illuminates a person; one's face shines differently on Shabbos than during the week.
And this is "a remembrance of the exodus from Mitzrayim" — for through the illumination of the neshamah yeseirah they become free people.
The extra soul of Shabbos confers a kind of inner freedom, mirroring the liberation of the exodus — hence "zecher li-yetzias Mitzrayim" corresponds to the dimension of "soul."
Summary: Although Shabbos's holiness is "fixed and established" by Hashem (unlike the festivals, which depend on Bnei Yisrael), Bnei Yisrael still share a unique portion in it. The three phrases of Kiddush — remembrance of creation, first of the holy convocations, and remembrance of the exodus — correspond to the three dimensions of world, year, and soul: Shabbos sustains all creation (world), is the source of the festivals (time), and brings the neshamah yeseirah that makes a Jew truly free (soul).
