Blessing flows through the inner point of wholeness

Concerning Birkas Kohanim (the priestly blessing).

The Sefas Emes explores why the channel of blessing was entrusted specifically to the Kohanim.

For it is taught: "no vessel holds blessing except peace (shalom)" (Uktzin 3:12).

Shalom — wholeness — is the only "vessel" capable of containing and retaining berachah.

Therefore it is written: "and He blessed... the seventh day" — Shabbos, which is called "shalom," and from it all six days are blessed.

Because Shabbos is the vessel of shalom, it can hold blessing, and from Shabbos the berachah flows out to all the weekdays.

And Hashem did not give each day its blessing on its own day, for the weekdays cannot hold blessing — only Shabbos, which is shalom.

The mundane days lack the wholeness needed to contain berachah, so all the blessing is concentrated in Shabbos and distributed from there.

And it is stated in the Zohar HaKadosh: why was no manna (mann) found on the seventh day? Because all blessings depend upon it. See there.

No mann fell on Shabbos because Shabbos is the source on which all blessings hang; it gives rather than receives, so its sustenance comes through it to the other days.

And it has already been explained in our words in several places that blessing depends on the root — the inner, essential point (nekudah penimius) that is above the garb of nature and physicality.

Berachah originates not in the physical world but in the hidden inner point that transcends nature, the penimiyus from which all bounty descends.

And this is the point that is called "shalom," for in this world wholeness is lacking.

That inner point is itself "shalom"/shleimus (completeness), which the physical world inherently lacks; only by connecting to it does blessing become possible.

Therefore the Kohen, who has no portion or inheritance —

The Kohen owns no share in the land, so he is not bound to the physical, material realm.

— to him the blessing was entrusted.

Precisely because the Kohen is detached from materiality and bound to the inner point, he becomes the fitting channel for berachah.

Just like Shabbos itself, in which no manna was found, yet to it the blessing was entrusted.

The Kohen parallels Shabbos exactly: both stand above ordinary physical provision, and for that very reason both are the vessels of blessing.

And so it is in the dimensions of olam, shanah, nefesh (space, time, soul) — each has an inner spiritual point that spreads from level to level down to the physical reality before us.

In every dimension — space, time, and soul — there is a hidden inner point that radiates downward through successive levels until it reaches the tangible physical world.

And the Bais Hamikdash and Yerushalayim are the root of the world's wholeness, and from there blessing goes forth to all places, as it is written: "in every place where I cause My Name to be mentioned... I will come to you and bless you" (Shemos 20:21).

In the dimension of space (olam), the Bais Hamikdash is the inner point from which berachah flows to everywhere else.

And Bnei Yisrael are the wholeness of souls and are called "the Shulamis" (the perfect one), and their wholeness is the Kohanim, and it is written: "and they shall place My Name..." (Bamidbar 6:27).

In the dimension of soul (nefesh), Bnei Yisrael are the point of wholeness, called "Shulamis," and among them the Kohanim are the inner point through whom Hashem's Name is placed upon the people.

That the blessing comes through the Kohanim, who place His blessed Name upon Bnei Yisrael.

The Kohanim are the conduit who draw Hashem's Name onto the people, and through that the berachah flows.

And from them the blessing goes forth to all the souls.

From this inner point of the Kohanim, berachah spreads to every soul of Bnei Yisrael.

And Shabbos is the wholeness of time and is called "shalom," the Name of the Holy One, blessed is He, and from it the blessing goes forth to all times.

In the dimension of time (shanah), Shabbos is the inner point of shleimus — itself a Name of Hashem — from which blessing flows to all the days.

However, one must nullify everything to the aforementioned point.

To receive berachah, all the outer levels must be subordinated in bittul to that inner point of wholeness.

And to nullify all the days to Shabbos.

Concretely, the weekdays must be made subservient to Shabbos, drawing their blessing from it.

And so it is written: "Thus shall you bless... say to them (amor lahem)" (Bamidbar 6:23).

The command to bless includes "say to them," which the Sefas Emes will read as pointing to the connection between the people and the Kohanim.

"When they say to them" (Targum).

The Aramaic rendering frames the blessing as something said toward the people, implying their receptive bond with the Kohanim.

That is, that Bnei Yisrael should nullify themselves (yisbatlu) to the Kohanim and believe that in them is the root of blessing.

To receive Birkas Kohanim, the people must practice bittul toward the Kohanim and have emunah that the source of berachah rests in them.

"Amirah" (saying) is an expression of joining and attachment (chibur, deveikus), as in "you have affirmed (he'emarta)... and He has affirmed you (he'emircha)" (Devarim 26:17-18).

The word "amirah" carries a sense of bonding and deveikus, just as the mutual "affirming" between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael denotes a deep connection.

And through this attachment (deveikus) they are able to be blessed from them, as above.

It is the bond of deveikus between the people and the Kohanim that opens the channel for berachah to flow.

Summary: Only "shalom" — wholeness — can hold blessing, so all berachah is concentrated in Shabbos and flows from it to the weekdays, just as no mann fell on Shabbos because all blessings hang upon it. Blessing always originates in an inner point (nekudah penimius) above nature: the Bais Hamikdash in space, Shabbos in time, and the Kohanim among the souls of Bnei Yisrael. The Kohen, like Shabbos, is detached from material portion, so the berachah is entrusted to him. To receive it, everything must be nullified to that inner point — the days to Shabbos, and Bnei Yisrael to the Kohanim — through the bittul, emunah, and deveikus implied in "amor lahem."
