Blessing flows through cessation and bittul
Shemittah · Shabbos · bittul · blessing · Bnei Yisrael
On the verse, "and the Shabbos of the land shall be for you to eat" (Vayikra 25:6).
The Sefas Emes opens with the verse about the produce of the Shemittah ("Shabbos") year, which the Torah designates "for you to eat."
Based on what is written in the holy Zohar, Yisro, on the verse "and He blessed… the seventh day" — since no manna was found on it… rather, all blessings depend on the seventh (day)…
The Zohar asks how the seventh day can be "blessed" when no manna fell on it. It answers that, on the contrary, all blessing is rooted in and flows from the seventh day, even though nothing new is produced on it.
And behold, from the root of the blessing that is revealed on Shabbos Kodesh, not everyone is able to receive.
The blessing revealed on Shabbos comes from a very lofty source, and not everyone is fit or prepared to receive it.
Only Bnei Yisrael are prepared to receive this influx (hashpa'ah).
Bnei Yisrael alone are spiritually prepared to receive the abundant flow of blessing that issues from Shabbos.
And likewise with Shemittah: "for you to eat" — precisely.
The same principle applies to the Shemittah year, the "Shabbos of the land": the Torah's emphatic "for you" teaches that this blessing is specifically reserved for Bnei Yisrael.
And the hint is that all the essential influx comes through the cessation (shevisah), and as written elsewhere, that this is why "from it all six days are blessed" — to make known that the nullification (bittul) of all labors is itself the very sustaining of the world.
The deeper message is that the primary blessing flows specifically through ceasing from work, not through doing it. From the rest of Shabbos all six weekdays are blessed, teaching that the bittul of all melachah — refraining from labor and acknowledging Hashem — is what truly upholds and sustains the world.
Summary: Just as the Zohar teaches that all blessing flows from the seventh day even though nothing is produced on it, so the produce of the Shemittah year ("the Shabbos of the land") is given specifically "for you" — for Bnei Yisrael, who alone are prepared to receive this lofty influx. The essential message is that the primary blessing comes precisely through cessation and bittul of all labor, for refraining from melachah, and thereby recognizing Hashem, is itself what sustains the entire world.
