Shabbos as the vessel that holds all blessing

On the verse: "Remember … the Shabbos day … for six days [Hashem] made … and He rested … therefore He blessed [the Shabbos day]" (Shemos 20:8-11).

The Sefas Emes opens with the pasuk of Shabbos in the Aseres Hadibros, focusing on why Hashem "blessed" the seventh day.

And in the Zohar: Since no "manna" was found on it, what blessing [is there]? … Rather, all the blessings depend upon the seventh [day].

The Zohar asks: how can Shabbos be "blessed" with food if no manna fell on it? It answers that Shabbos is the source from which all blessing of the whole week flows.

And the matter is that the blessing is something spiritual (ruchniyus).

The berachah of Shabbos is not a physical thing but a spiritual reality.

However, Shabbos is a "vessel that holds blessing (kli machzik berachah)."

Shabbos is the kli — the container — that receives and holds all spiritual berachah, like the vessel of "shalom" that Chazal call the only fitting holder of blessing.

And everything done in the six days of Creation was all in order to form this "vessel that holds blessing," and this was completed on Shabbos.

The entire work of the six days of Bereishis was directed toward producing this vessel of berachah, which reached completion only with Shabbos.

And as it is taught: Why does [the Torah] begin with "Bereishis"? Because of "the power of His deeds He told to His people…" (Tehillim 111:6).

Rashi's question — why begin the Torah with Creation rather than with the mitzvos — is answered by the verse: Hashem revealed His creative power to give Eretz Yisrael to His people. The Sefas Emes uses this to show Creation and Torah are one purpose.

And it is all one matter, for the essence is the Torah.

Creation and Torah are a single purpose: the world was created for the sake of Torah, which is the true essence.

And nonetheless, Hashem made all the works of Creation for the merit of Bnei Yisrael, who were sent into this world to clarify and to nullify (l'varer, l'vatel) all of creation toward the Torah and toward His will.

Bnei Yisrael's task in this world is to refine and subordinate (bittul) all of creation to the Torah and to ratzon Hashem, revealing that everything exists for His purpose.

And this itself is the matter of the preparation of the six working days toward the Shabbos.

The weekday avodah of refining the world is precisely the "preparation" that leads up to and culminates in Shabbos.

And it is like the preparation of this world for the World to Come, as it is taught: "This world is like a corridor (prozdor) [before the World to Come]" (Avos 4:16).

Just as Olam Hazeh is an antechamber preparing one for Olam Haba, so the six weekdays are an antechamber preparing for Shabbos.

Therefore it is written: "And He rested on the seventh day."

Hashem's "rest" on the seventh day expresses that the seventh day is the goal toward which all the work was aimed.

For indeed this is the tachlis (purpose) of Creation.

Shabbos is not merely a pause but the very purpose for which the world was created.

As stated, that all the doing is for the sake of the Shabbos, so that everything should be nullified (yisbatlu) to become a "vessel that holds blessing."

All activity exists so that creation may attain bittul — surrendering itself to Hashem — and thereby become a worthy vessel to hold the berachah of Shabbos.

And so we say [in the Shabbos prayers]: "You sanctified … the purpose (tachlis) of heaven and earth."

The Friday-night tefillah itself declares Shabbos to be the tachlis — the goal — of all heaven and earth.

And on all the working days it is written: "And [God] said: Let there be light, a firmament," etc.; but on Shabbos it is written: "And He blessed (vayevarech)."

The weekdays are marked by acts of "saying" and making; the seventh day alone is marked by "blessing" — the day that gathers and holds the spiritual berachah of all the rest.

Now, Bnei Yisrael were chosen to be prepared to receive the blessing.

Bnei Yisrael are the people fitted to be the vessel that receives Hashem's berachah, paralleling Shabbos itself.

And during the working days they are emissaries (sheluchim) to rectify this world.

On weekdays, Bnei Yisrael serve as Hashem's shelichim (agents), sent to repair and elevate the physical world.

For the essence of the souls of Yisrael is in the World to Come.

The true root of the Jewish neshamah belongs to Olam Haba — the spiritual world.

It is only that they were sent into this world to rectify the world.

The neshamah descends into Olam Hazeh on a temporary shlichus to fix and refine the world.

And on the holy Shabbos they receive the blessing.

Shabbos is when Bnei Yisrael, like the seventh day itself, become the vessel that receives the divine berachah.

And this is the meaning of "Remember … the Shabbos day."

"Zachor" — remember — is the key to grasping the inner nature of Shabbos.

For when the neshamah is sent into this world, the great light from above is forgotten by it.

Descending into Olam Hazeh causes the soul to "forget" the great supernal light of its true source.

And on Shabbos, through the power of the neshamah yeseirah (the additional soul), it remembers the supernal kedushah.

The neshamah yeseirah granted on Shabbos restores the soul's "memory" of the lofty holiness it left behind — this is the inner meaning of "Zachor."

Summary: Shabbos is the "vessel that holds blessing": all the work of the six days of Creation was directed toward forming this vessel, completed on the seventh day. The weekdays are a corridor preparing for Shabbos, just as Olam Hazeh prepares for Olam Haba. The root of the Jewish neshamah is in the World to Come; sent into this world as Hashem's emissaries to refine creation through bittul, Bnei Yisrael "forget" their supernal light during the week — and on Shabbos, through the neshamah yeseirah, they "remember" the upper kedushah and receive the blessing. This is the inner sense of "Zachor es yom haShabbos."
