Matan Torah as the re-creation of Bnei Yisrael
Yisro · Matan Torah · segulah · new soul · renewal
In the Mechilta: "And Yisro heard" (Shemos 18:1)… "all that [Hashem] had done for Moshe and for Yisrael."
The Mechilta draws attention to the wording "for Moshe and for Yisrael," which the Sefas Emes will unpack.
What did he hear? The receiving of the Torah.
The "hearing" that drew Yisro was specifically the news of Matan Torah.
And we must understand the expression "that He did for Moshe and for Yisrael."
What does it mean that Hashem "did" something — an act of making — for Moshe and Yisrael?
For it is written: "If you will surely hearken to My voice… you shall be to Me a segulah (treasure)" (Shemos 19:5).
The key lies in the word "vihyisem" (you shall be), which the Sefas Emes reads as a statement of new being.
The explanation of "vihyisem" is that a new existence (havayah) should come into being.
"You shall be" means more than a promise of status — it means Bnei Yisrael would acquire an entirely new mode of existence.
As it is written: "This nation I formed for Myself" (Yeshayahu 43:21).
Hashem "formed" Bnei Yisrael as a new creation, fashioned for His own purpose.
And this means: at the receiving of the Torah, Yisrael received a new existence and form, for when the Holy One, blessed is He, said "I am Hashem your God" (Shemos 20:2), His Divinity rested upon them.
The moment Hashem proclaimed "Anochi," His very Elokus came to rest upon Bnei Yisrael, recreating them with a new spiritual form and being.
And every convert who converts has a new soul added to him, as Chazal said on the pasuk "the souls that they made in Charan" (Bereishis 12:5).
Conversion itself brings a new neshamah — just as Avraham and Sarah "made souls" by bringing people under the wings of the Shechinah.
How much more so Bnei Yisrael, who received the Torah and entered beneath the wings of the Shechinah.
If a single convert receives a new soul, certainly all of Bnei Yisrael, entering under the Shechinah at Sinai, received this new being.
A new existence was given to them.
At Matan Torah a wholly new havayah was bestowed upon Bnei Yisrael.
And this is "that He did for Moshe and for Yisrael."
The "doing" of the verse is precisely this act of re-creation — Hashem "made" Moshe and Yisrael into new beings through the Torah.
And moreover, this is a statement that endures forever.
This re-creation is not a one-time historical event but an ongoing reality available in every generation.
"If you will surely hearken to My voice and keep My covenant, you shall be to Me…" (Shemos 19:5).
The verse's condition — hearkening and guarding the covenant — applies perpetually, and so does its result, the new being.
When a Jew labors in the words of Torah and guards His covenant,
The same conditions hold today: toiling in Torah and keeping the bris.
he merits to receive new vitality and a new existence.
Through this labor every Jew can renew the very gift of Sinai, drawing down fresh chiyus and a renewed havayah.
to become a segulah (treasure) for His Name.
By this renewal a person becomes a treasured possession dedicated to Hashem's Name.
And as is taught in the holy Zohar on the pasuk "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living souls" (Bereishis 1:20), see there.
The Zohar there speaks of the renewal and bringing-forth of living souls — supporting the idea that toil in Torah continually generates new spiritual life within a person.
Summary: The Mechilta's phrase "that He did for Moshe and for Yisrael" reveals that Matan Torah was an act of re-creation: when Hashem proclaimed "Anochi" and His Divinity rested upon Bnei Yisrael, they received a new existence (havayah) and form, becoming His segulah — just as a convert receives a new soul, and all the more so all of Yisrael entering beneath the wings of the Shechinah. This is no one-time event but an enduring reality: whenever a Jew toils in Torah and guards the covenant, he again merits new vitality and a renewed being, becoming a treasure for Hashem's Name.
