Three stages of ascent and Korach's separation

Korach · תר"ס (1899) · Essay 2Share

Korach · techeiles · teshuvah · Aharon · bittul · nefesh ruach neshamah

It is taught: techeiles (the blue thread) resembles the sea, the sea resembles the firmament, and the firmament resembles the Throne of Glory (Kisei HaKavod) (Menachos 43b).

The classic chain of resemblances ascends from the blue of the tzitzis up to the Throne of Glory. The Sefas Emes will read these three rungs as three stages of spiritual ascent.

It seems that these three levels are meant to recall all three of these: Yetzias Mitzrayim, as it says, "I am Hashem your God who took you out" — and the climax of the redemption was at the sea, as it says, "And Hashem saved… on that day" (Shemos 14:30).

The first rung, the "sea," recalls the Exodus, whose culmination was the splitting of the sea — the completion of Israel's redemption from Egypt.

And the "firmament" alludes to the receiving of the Torah from Heaven.

The second rung, the firmament (the heavens), corresponds to Matan Torah, the Torah given from Above at Sinai.

And the Throne of Glory alludes to the resting of the Shechinah in the Mishkan and the Clouds of Glory (ananei hakavod).

The highest rung, the Throne of Glory, corresponds to the indwelling of the Divine Presence — the Mishkan and the protective Clouds of Glory that enveloped Israel.

And these correspond to the three gifts that Israel had as well.

The same threefold pattern maps onto the three miraculous gifts that accompanied Israel in the wilderness.

The Well — the aspect of "sea."

The Well of Miriam, a source of water, parallels the "sea" rung of the Exodus.

And the "firmament" — bread from heaven, the mann, in the merit of Moshe.

The mann, "bread from heaven," parallels the firmament rung and was given in the merit of Moshe Rabbeinu, just as the Torah came through him.

And the Clouds of Glory in the merit of Aharon.

The Clouds of Glory, the highest gift, corresponding to the Throne of Glory, were given in the merit of Aharon HaKohen.

And these are also the aspect of the three festivals (shalosh regalim).

The same triad underlies the three pilgrimage festivals — Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos — each marking one of these stages.

And the essential matter alludes to the aspects of nefesh, ruach, and neshamah.

At root, these three stages are the three levels of the soul — nefesh, ruach, and neshamah — ascending from the lowest to the highest.

For at Yetzias Mitzrayim the redemption was in the nefesh.

The Exodus redeemed the lowest soul-level, the nefesh — the basic life-force freed from bondage.

And at the receiving of the Torah they received the aspect of ruach.

Matan Torah elevated Israel to the level of ruach, the next, higher dimension of soul.

And afterward, the neshamah.

The final stage — the indwelling of the Shechinah — corresponds to the loftiest level, the neshamah.

And although the level of Moshe Rabbeinu is great.

The Sefas Emes anticipates an objection: Moshe is the greatest of all; how can Aharon be connected to the highest rung?

But Aharon, by the power of bringing Bnei Yisrael back in teshuvah, merited a supernal level, and the avodah of Yom Kippur in the innermost chamber (lifnai v'lifnim) was given to him — the aspect of teshuvah, which is the aspect of neshamah.

Aharon's unique greatness was drawing people close and inspiring teshuvah. This earned him the loftiest rung — the Yom Kippur service in the Holy of Holies — because teshuvah reaches the highest soul-level, the neshamah.

Concerning this they said: "In the place where ba'alei teshuvah stand, even perfect tzaddikim cannot stand" (Berachos 34b).

The penitent reaches heights that even the wholly righteous cannot — which is why Aharon, master of teshuvah, attains a level above even Moshe in this respect.

And great is teshuvah, for it reaches up to the Throne of Glory (Yoma 86a).

Teshuvah ascends all the way to the Kisei HaKavod — the very highest rung in the chain — confirming its link to the neshamah and the Throne of Glory.

Therefore the Clouds of Glory were in the merit of Aharon.

Because teshuvah reaches the Throne of Glory and Aharon was its master, the gift corresponding to that highest rung — the Clouds of Glory — came through him.

With this we can understand the dispute of Korach, who made a garment entirely of techeiles, while Moshe Rabbeinu said that one specifically needs only a single thread of techeiles — for from the level of the supernal techeiles one can draw down only a small illumination, and even that only with great effort ("all this, and perhaps").

Korach argued that a tallis made wholly of techeiles needs no extra blue thread — implying one can grasp the highest level in full. Moshe taught that only a single thread is possible: from the loftiest "supernal techeiles" we can draw but a faint ray into this world, and only with great striving and uncertainty.

And Korach did not grasp this aspect.

Korach failed to understand that the highest level cannot be wholly possessed below — that only a small, hard-won connection to it is attainable.

And one can further explain, based on what the Midrash says, that He called her (Knesses Yisrael) by three aspects.

The Sefas Emes brings a second approach: the Midrash describes Hashem calling Israel by three names, which he will tie to the same three stages.

בת.

"Daughter" (bas).

The first name, "daughter," corresponds to the lowest stage — the redemption of the nefesh at Yetzias Mitzrayim.

"Sister" (achos).

The second name, "sister," corresponds to Matan Torah, the level of ruach.

אם.

"Mother" (eim).

The third name, "mother," corresponds to the highest stage — the indwelling of the Shechinah, the level of neshamah.

And Korach said, "The entire congregation are all holy" (Bamidbar 16:3).

Korach claimed that all of Israel were already on the highest level, so no special leader or hierarchy was needed.

And they heard "I am Hashem your God" (Shemos 20:2).

Korach's proof: since all of Israel heard the first commandment directly at Sinai, he reasoned they had all reached the ultimate level.

He thought that there is no higher level in Israel than the receiving of the Torah.

Korach assumed Matan Torah (the "firmament," the level of ruach) was the peak — that nothing loftier remained to attain.

And since the Levi'im were not involved in the sin of the Golden Calf, he became haughty over Aharon.

Korach (a Levi) prided himself on the tribe's purity from the Eigel, looking down on Aharon, who had been involved in the Calf — assuming his own standing was therefore higher.

But in truth Aharon merited and brought merit to the many, and after the sin he was elevated above the level they had at the receiving of the Torah.

Precisely because Aharon led the people back through teshuvah after the Eigel, he rose even higher than the level of Matan Torah — to the neshamah/Throne-of-Glory rung that Korach never imagined existed.

This is the hint of the Midrash: "A brother offended (nifsha) is harder to win than a strong city" (Mishlei 18:19).

The verse hints at Korach, the "offended brother," who through his strife cut himself off — failing to recognize Aharon's elevation through teshuvah.

And these three aspects — daughter, sister, mother — are themselves the aspect of the three festivals.

The three names again map onto the shalosh regalim, reinforcing that the whole pattern of ascent is woven through the festivals as well.

And just as it was in the generation of the wilderness, so it is forever: that a Jew must rectify these three aspects.

This is not merely history; every Jew in every age must work through these same three stages of avodah.

To be redeemed from the yetzer hara and the sitra achra — the aspect of Yetzias Mitzrayim and freedom (cheirus).

The first stage is personal "Exodus": freeing oneself from the yetzer hara and the forces of impurity, attaining inner cheirus.

And afterward to merit Torah — the aspect of ruach.

The second stage is to acquire Torah, elevating oneself to the level of ruach.

And afterward one must bring about some new rectification (tikkun) in the world, for which a person was sent here.

The third and highest stage is to accomplish one's unique mission — to effect a real tikkun in the world, the very purpose for which one's soul was dispatched below.

And every Jew has a share in this.

This highest avodah is not reserved for the great; every single Jew has his own portion in bringing tikkun to the world.

Through tefillah and teshuvah, even a simple person can awaken some rectification in the aspect that is unique to him — each one according to his own measure.

The tools of prayer and teshuvah are available to all. Even the simplest Jew can effect his own particular tikkun, each according to his personal capacity and the unique role given to him.

And behold it is written, "And Korach took" — and the Targum renders it "he separated himself (v'ispleig)."

The Aramaic translation of "Korach took" is "he set himself apart" — Korach's essential sin was self-separation, dividing himself off from the whole.

For Moshe Rabbeinu was the choicest of the prophets, yet he nullified himself (bittul) to the community of Israel, as it says, "the inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov" (Devarim 33:4) — that he entered himself into the state of the whole of Klal Yisrael.

Despite being the greatest prophet, Moshe embodied bittul: he merged himself with the entire nation, taking on their condition as his own rather than standing apart.

And when Bnei Yisrael fell from their level through the sin, Moshe Rabbeinu placed himself within the community.

Even when the people sinned and descended, Moshe did not separate from them but lowered himself into their midst, identifying fully with the klal.

But Korach, in the abundance of wisdom that he possessed, held fast to himself and did not wish to nullify himself to the community — and therefore Hashem did not choose him.

Korach's great wisdom became his downfall: he clung to his own greatness and refused the bittul of merging into the whole. Because true leadership requires self-nullification to the klal, Hashem chose Moshe and Aharon rather than him.

Summary: The chain of techeiles—sea—firmament—Throne of Glory maps onto three ascending stages — Exodus (nefesh), Torah (ruach), and the Shechinah's indwelling (neshamah) — paralleled by the Well, mann, and Clouds of Glory and the three festivals. Aharon, through inspiring teshuvah, rose even above Matan Torah to the highest rung, which Korach never grasped; thinking the level of Sinai was the peak, Korach "separated himself" out of pride and refused the bittul to Klal Yisrael that defined Moshe — and so Hashem did not choose him. Every Jew must work through all three stages and effect his own unique tikkun through tefillah and teshuvah.
