Hanukkah’s Priestly Light
Hanukkah · Kohen Gadol · Aaron · Mezuzah · Holy Light
“And behold, Chanuka exists through the power of the High Priest, Aaron the Kohen, who left a holy imprint in the world.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the spiritual force of Chanuka originates in Aaron, whose service engraved a permanent holiness that reappears each year.
“And it is revealed on Chanuka.”
This hidden imprint becomes manifest specifically during the days of Chanuka.
“And this was the aspect of the garment—he was given eight priestly garments, and therefore there are eight days of Chanuka, for each day a radiance from a particular garment is revealed.”
Aaron’s eight sacred garments correspond to the eight days, each day transmitting a distinct light tied to one of those spiritual vestments.
“And in general it is written: ‘Your Tumim and Your Urim,’ meaning Tumim that make one’s words whole, and Urim that illuminate their words, as the Sages taught.”
The Sefat Emet links the priestly functions of Tumim and Urim to inner wholeness and illumination, the two foundations of sacred expression.
“And the mezuzah is the aspect of Tumim, as it is said: ‘The truth of Torah is the mezuzah.’”
The mezuzah represents completeness and truth, aligning with the attribute of Tumim.
“And the Hanuka lights are the aspect of Urim, placed opposite the mezuzah to say that through these lights the words of the mezuzah are illuminated, so that a person may receive their radiance into his heart.”
The Chanuka candles shine the inner meaning of the mezuzah’s message, enabling its truth to be felt within the heart.
Summary: Chanuka reveals Aaron’s enduring holiness, each day channeling a different spiritual garment. The mezuzah embodies completeness, the candles illumination; together they allow divine truth to enter the heart.
