Shalom as the vessel of blessing

In the section of "the law of the shelamim (peace-offerings)," the Midrash states that the shelamim are designated only for Bnei Yisrael — "Hashem will bless… His people with shalom," see there.
The Sefas Emes opens by noting the Midrash's teaching that the peace-offering is unique to Bnei Yisrael, tied to the blessing that Hashem grants His people peace.
For all the korbanos are a drawing-near in some particular matter.
Each type of sacrifice connects a person to Hashem through one specific channel or aspect.
For everything has a root above.
Every particular thing in the world has its source on high, and a korban reconnects that thing to its root.
But shalom is the vessel that holds blessing.
Unlike a particular korban, shalom is the all-encompassing vessel within which all blessing can be contained — as Chazal teach, "the only vessel that holds blessing is peace."
And it is taught in the Midrash Vayikra: "Better is a handful of tranquility" — referring to Shabbos Kodesh — than "two fistfuls of toil" in the weekdays.
The verse from Koheles is read as praising Shabbos: a single "handful" of restful Shabbos is worth more than the double-fistful of labor of the working week.
For "kaf" (a handful/palm, also "vessel") is a vessel, as it is written at the conclusion of the work of creation, "vayechulu" (and they were completed), and the Midrash explains that they became a vessel (keli).
He plays on "kaf" as both "handful" and "vessel": the word "vayechulu," read as related to "keli," teaches that creation was finished by being formed into a single vessel — Shabbos.
For each of the weekdays is a particular thing — this one is unlike that one.
Each of the six working days has its own distinct character and is separate from the others.
But on Shabbos all the days are made into a single vessel.
Shabbos gathers and unites the scattered, particular weekdays into one integrated vessel.
Therefore it is called shalom.
Because Shabbos unifies the fragmented days, it bears the name shalom — wholeness and peace.
And Chazal said that the Name of the Holy One is Shalom.
Hashem Himself is called by the name Shalom, which the Sefas Emes will now explain.
And the matter is that shalom is that which has no opposition to it.
The essence of shalom is the absence of anything that opposes or contends with it.
And every particular thing has something that opposes it.
Anything finite and specific necessarily has an opposite that stands against it.
But the Holy One, who gives life to all, is the King to whom the shalom belongs — for since everything comes from Him and turns back to Him, He is called Shalom.
Because Hashem is the source and goal of everything, nothing can truly stand opposed to Him; all things flow from Him and return to Him, so He is the very embodiment of shalom.
And a measure of this the Holy One gave to Bnei Yisrael, who are called "Adam," as it is taught, "you are called Adam."
Bnei Yisrael share in this quality of shalom because they are called "Adam," the all-inclusive man.
And Adam was completed at the end of the work of creation, adjacent to Shabbos, being a "small world" (olam katan) that includes all of creation; therefore his drawing-near is in the category of completeness.
Adam, created last and beside Shabbos, is a microcosm containing all of creation, so his korban — the shelamim — is comprehensive, embracing the whole rather than one particular.
And it is written, "This is the law for the olah, for the minchah…"
The verse enumerates the various offerings, leading up to the shelamim.
It lists six items, with the shelamim at the end, just like the sixth day on which Adam was created.
The verse names six offerings, placing the shelamim last — paralleling the sixth day of creation when Adam, the all-encompassing being, was formed.
And the Torah is the aspect of Shabbos, in which all the days are unified, as above.
The Torah itself functions like Shabbos — the unifying principle that binds all the particulars into one harmonious whole.
Summary: Every korban draws a person near to Hashem through one particular channel, but the shelamim correspond to shalom — the all-embracing vessel that holds blessing. Shabbos gathers the distinct, opposing weekdays into a single unified vessel and so is called shalom; Hashem Himself is called Shalom because everything flows from Him and returns to Him, leaving nothing to oppose Him. Bnei Yisrael, called "Adam," the microcosm created last beside Shabbos, share this completeness, which is why the shelamim — listed sixth and last — and the unifying Torah embody the wholeness of shalom.
