The fragrance of Gan Eden as blessing
On the verse "and he smelled the fragrance of his garments..." — that the fragrance of Gan Eden entered with him.
When Yitzchak smelled Yaakov's garments, what he actually sensed was the scent of Gan Eden that accompanied Yaakov.
For from Gan Eden the blessing goes out to the whole world — "there Hashem commanded the blessing" — as it is written, "And a river went out [of Eden]... and from there it separated..."
Gan Eden is the wellspring from which blessing flows into the entire world, just as the river of Eden flowed out and divided to water the earth.
And it is the root of all blessings.
Gan Eden is the ultimate source from which every blessing in the world derives.
And likewise in the Bais Hamikdash there is something of this, and so too among souls — for Adam HaRishon was a vessel to draw down the blessing to all souls.
This channel of blessing appears in three forms: in place (the Bais Hamikdash) and in the realm of souls, where Adam was originally the conduit through which blessing reached all human souls.
Therefore it is written, "and He placed there the man."
Adam was set in Gan Eden precisely because he was meant to be the vessel drawing its blessing into the world.
And after the sin it is written, "and He sent him out."
The cheit caused Adam to be expelled from Gan Eden, severing him from that source of blessing.
And that first garment was stripped from him.
Through the sin, Adam lost his original spiritual "garment" — the radiant, holy clothing he had worn in Gan Eden.
And Yaakov, who rectified the sin of Adam, merited this fragrance.
Because Yaakov repaired the damage of Adam's sin, he regained access to the lost fragrance of Gan Eden — wearing, as it were, that original garment.
And similarly, on Shabbos Kodesh there is the fragrance of Gan Eden.
What Yaakov attained in person is available in time as well: Shabbos carries within it the very scent of Gan Eden.
And therefore "He blessed the seventh day" — "the fragrance of my son is like the fragrance of a field" — like what is written regarding the korbanos, "My pleasing fragrance you shall guard," that the fragrance rises up from the korbanos on high.
The blessing of Shabbos is itself this fragrance of Gan Eden. Just as the korbanos sent up a "rei'ach nicho'ach" to Heaven, Shabbos and Yaakov's fragrance rise to the same source of blessing.
And the fragrance of Gan Eden is awakened.
The rising scent of the korbanos arouses and draws down the fragrance of Gan Eden from above.
And likewise in the souls of Bnei Yisrael.
This same awakening of the Gan Eden fragrance occurs within the very souls of Bnei Yisrael.
And this itself is the blessing with which Yitzchak blessed: "See, the fragrance of my son" — that the fragrance of the souls of Bnei Yisrael should be esteemed like the fragrance of the korbanos.
Yitzchak's blessing was that the souls of Bnei Yisrael should be as precious before Hashem, and as effective in drawing blessing, as the fragrance of the korbanos.
And as it is taught, the tefillos were instituted in place of the daily korbanos (temidin) — that one can raise up a pleasing fragrance through tefillah just as through the korbanos.
Since prayer replaced the daily offerings, our tefillah can ascend as a "rei'ach nicho'ach" and accomplish what the korbanos once did.
And through this fragrance, all the shefa (flow of abundance) and blessings are drawn down from heaven.
This "fragrance" — whether of korbanos, tefillah, or the holy souls of Bnei Yisrael — is the channel that pulls down all heavenly abundance and blessing.
As it is written, "and He shall give you (veyiten lecha)" — He shall give, and give again — that the abundance be drawn from heaven each and every day.
The blessing "veyiten lecha" implies a continual, renewing flow: Hashem gives and gives again, drawing down fresh shefa from Heaven every single day.
Summary: The fragrance of Gan Eden, the root of all blessing that once flowed through Adam and was lost in his sin, was regained by Yaakov, who rectified that sin. This same fragrance lives on in Shabbos, in the korbanos, in tefillah, and in the holy souls of Bnei Yisrael — and through it Hashem draws down a continual, daily flow of abundance and blessing into the world.
