Yaakov's blessings hidden in Shabbos

Regarding the blessings that Yaakov received, it is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh: why were the blessings of Esav fulfilled, while those of Yaakov were not fulfilled?

The Sefas Emes opens with the Zohar's striking question: Esav (through Eisav's worldly portion) seemed to receive his blessings in full, while Yaakov's blessings appear unfulfilled in this world.

Because he set them aside for the World to Come (alma d'asi).

The Zohar answers that Yaakov deliberately reserved his blessings for Olam Haba rather than cashing them in here.

The matter is as the Zohar HaKadosh says on "And God blessed the seventh day": since no manna was found on it, what blessing was found in it? Rather, all blessings depend on the seventh — meaning that it is the source of all blessings and cannot be revealed in physicality.

The Zohar asks how Shabbos can be "blessed" when no manna fell on it — there seems to be no tangible blessing. It answers that Shabbos is the very source from which all blessing flows; precisely because it is the root, it cannot be expressed in a physical, material form.

So too, these blessings (of Yaakov) are the root of all blessings, and cannot be revealed in Olam Hazeh.

Yaakov's blessings are like Shabbos: they are the spiritual root and source of all blessing, and therefore, by their very nature, cannot be manifest in this physical world.

Therefore, regarding Shabbos, which is a foretaste of Olam Haba, it is written: "I will feed you the heritage of Yaakov" — for they (these blessings) are present, only that we have no mouth with which to eat them, since they are spiritual.

The verse links Shabbos specifically to "the heritage of Yaakov." Yaakov's blessings do exist and are present, but they are purely spiritual; in our ordinary physical state we have no "mouth" capable of receiving and "eating" them.

And in the merit of Shabbos it is written "and I will feed you" — for through the power of the illumination of the neshamah yeseirah and the kedushah of Shabbos, the blessings of Yaakov are revealed.

On Shabbos, however, the "and I will feed you" is fulfilled: the extra Shabbos soul and the holiness of the day give us the spiritual capacity to receive and taste Yaakov's hidden blessings, which finally become revealed.

Summary: The Sefas Emes resolves the Zohar's question of why Yaakov's blessings seem unfulfilled while Esav's were realized: Yaakov reserved his blessings for Olam Haba. Like Shabbos — the blessed day on which no manna fell because it is the very source of all blessing and cannot appear in physical form — Yaakov's blessings are the spiritual root of all blessing and cannot be revealed in this world. Only on Shabbos, a foretaste of the World to Come, through the neshamah yeseirah and the day's kedushah, do we gain the capacity to "eat" and reveal the heritage of Yaakov.
