Exodus Empowers Sanctifying Hashem Above Nature
kiddush Hashem · mesirus nefesh · Exodus · Sefirah · nullifying nature
On the verse, "And I shall be sanctified among Bnei Yisrael... who brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim..." — and Chazal expounded: "On this condition I brought you out..."
The verse (Vayikra 22:32-33) ties Hashem's being sanctified among Bnei Yisrael to the Exodus. Chazal read it as a condition: Hashem took us out of Egypt precisely so that we would sanctify His Name, even with mesirus nefesh.
For behold, Bnei Yisrael are commanded to give over their lives (mesirus nefesh) for the sanctification of His Name, may He be blessed.
There is an obligation of kiddush Hashem — to be ready to sacrifice one's very life for the holiness of Hashem's Name.
And surely this power is found in every Jew, that he is able to nullify all of nature.
Every single Jew possesses an inner strength capable of overriding nature entirely — for mesirus nefesh means rising above the natural instinct of self-preservation.
And at the Exodus, when Hashem performed miracles for us, He took us out of nature, and through this it is in our power to nullify anything natural — as explained elsewhere on the verse, "You gave to those who fear You a banner (nes) to be raised up" (Tehillim 60:6).
The open miracles of Yetzias Mitzrayim lifted Bnei Yisrael above the natural order, implanting in us the ongoing ability to transcend nature. The Sefas Emes connects "nes" (banner/miracle) to being "raised up" above the natural.
And this is the matter of the days of Sefirah after the Exodus: we need to receive the radiance of the miracles into our souls, to be drawn after the way of the miraculous, and to nullify all of nature and the seven middos (traits) within a person to Him, may He be blessed.
Sefiras HaOmer is the work of internalizing that miraculous radiance. Over its weeks we are meant to subordinate our entire nature — the seven emotional middos — to Hashem, nullifying the natural self toward Him (bittul).
And through the power of the Exodus we are able to nullify all of nature, as above; and therefore the verse made the mitzvah of sanctifying Hashem's Name dependent on the Exodus.
It is the implanted strength of Yetzias Mitzrayim that empowers our bittul of nature. That is exactly why the Torah links the mitzvah of kiddush Hashem to the Exodus: the Exodus is what gives every Jew the capacity to sanctify Hashem's Name above nature itself.
Summary: The Torah ties the mitzvah of sanctifying Hashem's Name to Yetzias Mitzrayim because the open miracles of the Exodus lifted Bnei Yisrael above the natural order, implanting in every Jew the power to nullify nature — the strength needed for mesirus nefesh. The days of Sefirah are the avodah of absorbing that miraculous radiance into our souls and subordinating all seven middos, our entire nature, to Hashem.
