“Even if we are all wise, it is a commandment to recount the Exodus from Egypt, and whoever increases the telling is praiseworthy.”

The Sefat Emet begins by stressing that recounting the Exodus is not limited to the simple; even the wise must continue to expand the story. This indicates that the Exodus is an ever‑deepening spiritual foundation.

“According to the Mishnah: whoever’s fear of sin precedes his wisdom—his wisdom endures.”

This principle becomes the basis: spiritual awe must precede intellectual attainment.

As stated in the Zohar, Parashat Behar: like the ox upon which the yoke is first placed; if it does not accept the yoke, it can do nothing.

The Zohar teaches that submission to a higher order is the prerequisite for meaningful action.

Therefore the hand‑tefillin precedes, as is known.

The hand‑tefillin symbolizes accepting the yoke—action and submission—before the head‑tefillin, which symbolizes wisdom.

So too the Exodus from Egypt is preparation for accepting the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven.

The Sefat Emet reads the Exodus itself as an initiation into divine service.

For this reason God removed us from under the rule of Pharaoh, so we could become vessels to receive His sovereignty.

Freedom from oppressive power is necessary before accepting the divine yoke.

For one who is bound by another cannot properly receive the yoke of Heaven, as the Zohar concludes there.

Being enslaved to anything else prevents full spiritual acceptance.

Therefore, although afterward there are higher levels, including receiving the Torah—hinted at by the head‑tefillin—

Receiving Torah corresponds to intellectual tefillin, but only after the first stage of submission.

Nonetheless the hand‑tefillin comes first, hinting to the outstretched arm and the subjugation of the heart.

The physical liberation of Egypt symbolizes the heart’s submission to God.

When this is placed first, one then receives wisdom and understanding through the head‑tefillin properly.

The proper order conditions the mind to receive divine wisdom.

And the Sages said: Why does the section “Shema” come first? So that one accepts the yoke of Heaven before the yoke of commandments.

This liturgical order mirrors the Exodus‑to‑Torah pattern.

So too in the order of the festivals: Passover corresponds to loving acceptance of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Pesach is the festival of foundational divine acceptance.

And Shavuot to accepting Torah and commandments.

This is the intellectual and legal stage.

The section “Vehaya im shamoa,” as stated: once you have accepted My sovereignty, accept My decrees.

Obedience follows acceptance of the divine yoke.

And Sukkot corresponds to the tallit and tzitzit, as explained elsewhere.

Sukkot reflects enveloping divine presence, just as tzitzit and tallit surround the person.

And so every day: the hand‑tefillin, head‑tefillin, and tzitzit correspond to the three festivals.

Daily practice mirrors the yearly spiritual cycle.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Exodus, like hand‑tefillin and the festival of Pesach, represents acceptance of God’s sovereignty before wisdom and Torah can be received. This order repeats daily and yearly, forming the foundation of spiritual growth.
