Dual Redemption and Renewal

“God will surely remember.”
This phrase indicates the double remembrance, a sign of the dual redemption.
This is the sign of a twofold redemption.
The Sefat Emet alludes to two stages of redemption hinted in the doubled expression.
The idea is to suggest that two redemptions were needed: the Exodus from Egypt and the splitting of the Sea.
Redemption was not complete with the Exodus alone; the process required a second stage at the Sea.
And so it is taught in the Mekhilta.
The Midrashic source likewise identifies a dual structure in the redemption.
And one may say that these correspond to the aspects of Jacob and Joseph.
These two patriarchal qualities mirror the two stages of the redemption.
For the Exodus involved speech, the repair of the covenant of the tongue — “the voice is the voice of Jacob.”
The first redemption restored holy speech, associated with Jacob's spiritual power.
And at the splitting of the Sea was the repair of the covenant of the flesh, as the Midrash says: “This song — circumcision testifies for us.”
The Sea event represented purification of the physical dimension, linked to the covenant of circumcision.
And they interpreted the verse “He raised my feet upon a rock…” — ‘my steps’ referring to the covenant, the foundation of human generation.
The Midrash connects one’s “steps” with the covenantal foundation that enables renewal and continuity.
And then: “He placed in my mouth a new song.”
Only after this covenantal repair can a person genuinely sing a new song.
For one cannot come to song except through renewal.
Spiritual song requires inner rebirth.
And as it is written: at the beginning of the Egyptian exile they neglected the covenant of circumcision, and therefore renewal was taken from them.
The loss of covenantal integrity resulted in spiritual stagnation.
As the Midrash on Shemot, on the section “A new king arose,” teaches.
The Midrash links their failure of the covenant with the onset of the exile’s harshness.
So now renewal returned to them, and they sang a song.
The restoration of spiritual vitality enabled the Song at the Sea.
As it is written: “A new song — the redeemed praised.”
The redeemed can offer a truly new praise only once renewal is restored.
The Sefat Emet explains that the doubled expression “God will surely remember” points to two redemptions—Exodus and the Sea—corresponding to the spiritual qualities of Jacob and Joseph. The first repaired the covenant of speech; the second, the covenant of the body. True song arises only from renewal, which was restored to Israel at the Sea.
