Revealing inner holiness through self-sacrifice
On the pasuk, "and I shall be sanctified amid Bnei Yisrael, I am Hashem who sanctifies you."
The Sefas Emes takes up the verse commanding the sanctification of Hashem's Name among Bnei Yisrael.
Chazal expounded: to give over one's soul (mesirus nefesh) for the sanctification of His Name, may He be blessed.
The verse teaches the obligation of mesirus nefesh — self-sacrifice for Kiddush Hashem.
For through mesirus nefesh the holiness found within a Jew is revealed.
Self-sacrifice uncovers the kedushah that lies hidden within every Jew.
And this is "I am Hashem who sanctifies you" — for Hashem placed holiness within every soul of Yisrael.
"Mekadishchem" means Hashem has implanted a portion of kedushah in every Jewish soul.
But the physical matter (chomer) covers over the power of the neshamah.
The body and its materiality conceal and obscure the soul's inner holiness.
And through mesirus nefesh the barrier of physicality is removed, and the holiness is revealed.
Self-sacrifice strips away the screen of gashmiyus, allowing the hidden kedushah to shine forth.
And so it is always: according to the nullification (bittul) of the matter and physicality to Torah and mitzvos, so is the holiness revealed.
This is an ongoing principle, not only in martyrdom: the more one nullifies the physical self to Torah and mitzvos, the more the inner holiness is revealed.
And on Shabbos Kodesh the holiness is revealed as a gift, as it is written, "to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."
On Shabbos the kedushah is bestowed freely from Above as a matanah, without requiring the effort of self-sacrifice.
And through the power of mesirus nefesh the holiness is revealed by the power of man, as it is written, "and I shall be sanctified."
By contrast, through mesirus nefesh the holiness emerges by the person's own effort — "v'nikdashti," a sanctification we actively bring about.
And so is the way: Hashem gave a portion of holiness to Bnei Yisrael, and they must expand this point, and then they merit a new flow (hashpa'ah) through the power of their own arousal.
Hashem gives the initial holy "point," but it is for Bnei Yisrael to widen it through their own avodah; their arousal from below then draws down a fresh, new shefa.
And so it is with the days of the Sefirah: for on Pesach holiness descends in a general way.
The Omer period follows the same pattern — on Pesach a general kedushah is given as a gift from Above.
And afterward, in these days, it is written, "and you shall count for yourselves" — for your own selves — this is the power of man.
The Sefiras HaOmer, "u'sefartem lachem," is the human contribution: the work of expanding the holiness through one's own effort.
And afterward, on Shavuos, the two powers join together.
On Shavuos the gift from Above and the human effort below unite into one.
And this is the allusion of the waving of the Shtei HaLechem (the Two Loaves).
The two loaves offered on Shavuos symbolize this fusion of the two forces — the heavenly and the human.
And this is the meaning of "May the pleasantness of Hashem be upon us" (Tehillim 90:17) — this is the power that comes from above.
"Vihi noam Hashem" represents the kedushah descending as a gift from Above.
Afterward, "and establish the work of our hands upon us" — this is the power of man.
"U'ma'aseh yadeinu konenah aleinu" represents the human effort that builds upon the gift from below.
Afterward, "and the work of our hands, establish it" — this is the joining of the two powers, as above.
The repeated "konenehu" represents the final union of the heavenly gift and the human effort, completing the pattern.
Summary: Hashem implants a portion of kedushah in every Jewish soul, but the physical self conceals it; mesirus nefesh — and, on a daily level, bittul of the body to Torah and mitzvos — strips away that barrier and reveals the holiness through human effort. This complements the holiness given freely from Above (as on Shabbos): Hashem gives the initial point, and Bnei Yisrael must expand it to draw down a new flow. The same rhythm plays out in Sefiras HaOmer — Pesach's gift from Above, the counting that is human effort, and Shavuos (the Two Loaves, and the verses of "noam Hashem" and "ma'aseh yadeinu") where the two powers unite.
