איתא במשנה בפסח על התבואה הביאו לפני עומר שיתברך לכם תבואה שבשדות.
It is stated in the Mishnah: On Passover regarding the grain, they would bring the Omer before God so that the grain in the fields would be blessed for you.
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the offering of the Omer serves to draw blessing to all grain.
הענין הוא כי בנ"י כשיצאו ממצרים נעשו כלים לקבל הברכה הבאה משמים בשורש השפע.
The idea is that when Israel left Egypt, they became vessels capable of receiving the heavenly blessing at its root.
Leaving Egypt elevated Israel into receptacles for divine abundance at its pure source.
לכן נאסר חמץ בפסח שבנ"י מקבלין השפע קודם שנשתנה ומתחמץ ומתפשט לכמה ענפים ואז נק' חמץ.
Therefore leaven is forbidden on Passover, because Israel receives the influx before it changes, ferments, and expands into many branches—when it becomes chametz.
Chametz symbolizes the expanded, processed form of divine energy, whereas on Passover Israel accesses it at its unaltered source.
ומצה היא השפע כמו שהיא.
And matzah is the divine influx as it is in its original form.
Matzah embodies the pure, unexpanded spiritual energy.
וכאכילת מנחות לא תאפה חמץ חלקם כו' כן אכילת בני ישראל בפסח בקדושה.
And just as the meal-offerings are not baked leavened, for that is their sacred portion, so too the eating of Israel on Passover is in holiness.
The laws of offerings illuminate the sacred nature of Israel’s food during Passover.
ולכן סידר הקב"ה להיות דין התבואה בפסח על ידי שבני ישראל מוכנים בימים אלו לקבל הברכה כראוי.
Therefore God arranged that the law of grain be in Passover, because Israel is prepared in these days to receive the blessing properly.
Passover is uniquely aligned with Israel’s readiness to channel divine blessing.
ולכן פסח נק' שבת כדאיתא בשבת קודש דמתברכין מיני' כולהו יומין ומנא לא ירד בי' דאיהו שורש הברכה קודם שמתגשם כמ"ש בזוה"ק יתרו.
Thus Passover is called “Shabbat,” as it is taught regarding the holy Shabbat: all days receive blessing from it, and manna did not fall on it, for it is the root of blessing before it materializes, as stated in the Zohar.
Passover functions like Shabbat—source of unmaterialized blessing.
כמו כן בפסח הברכה יורדת על כל ימי השנה בשורש.
So too, on Passover the blessing descends for the entire year at its root.
Passover sets the spiritual foundation for the year’s sustenance.
וזה השורש אינם יכולין לקבל רק בנ"י.
And this root can be received only by Israel.
Only Israel can receive the primal form of blessing.
ולכן כתיב זכרתי לך חסד כו' לכתך אחרי כו'.
Therefore it is written: “I remember for you the kindness… your following Me…”
Israel’s devotion at the Exodus reflects their capacity for this root connection.
וזה נתקיים בפסח.
And this was fulfilled on Passover.
Passover embodies that primal covenantal devotion.
והשכר ע"ז קודש ישראל לה' שמקבלין הברכה בקודש שהוא ראשית השפע.
And the reward for this is: “Israel is holy to God,” for they receive the blessing in holiness, at the beginning of the flow.
Their sanctity derives from receiving divine abundance at its source.
ולכן והניף את העומר.
Therefore, “he shall wave the Omer.”
The waving symbolizes elevating the blessing to its source.
דכ' השמים שמים לה' והארץ נתן כו' ומקשי בגמ' דכ' לה' הארץ ומשני כאן קודם ברכה כו'.
For it is written: “The heavens are the heavens of God, and the earth He gave…” and the Gemara asks: it also says “The earth is God’s,” and answers: here it refers to before the blessing, etc.
The distinction is between the earth in its natural state and after its divine blessing is acknowledged.
והפי' שבנ"י הם נק' אדם ויכולין לקבל השפע שהשי"ת נותן ודביקין בכח המתנה.
The explanation: Israel are called “adam,” capable of receiving the divine influx and cleaving to the power of the gift.
Israel’s spiritual stature enables direct reception of blessing.
וע"י שמעידין שהכל מאתו ית' ושלה' הארץ ומלואה. עי"ז ניתן להם הארץ.
And by testifying that everything is from God, and that the earth is His, therefore the land is granted to them.
Acknowledgment begets inheritance; spiritual recognition yields possession.
וז"ש במדרש שניתן הארץ לאברהם אבינו בזכות העומר ואתה כו' בריתי תשמור.
Thus the Midrash says the land was given to Abraham in the merit of the Omer, as it says: “And you shall keep My covenant.”
The Omer represents fidelity to the root of blessing.
היינו להיות דביקות בשורש.
Meaning: to maintain attachment to the root.
The core of the covenant is clinging to the source.
וכמו שדביקות הגוף בשורש ע"י ברית מילה.
And just as the body’s connection to its root is through circumcision,
Circumcision anchors the body in holiness.
כמו כן דביקות הארץ ע"י העומר שהוא הראשית.
So too the land’s attachment is through the Omer, which is the beginning.
The Omer sanctifies the land at its source.
וכמו שהמילה נותנת קדושה לכל הגוף.
And just as circumcision gives holiness to the entire body,
One act of sanctification radiates outward.
כן ע"י התנופה של העומר נשאר קדושה לכל המזון של כל השנה.
So through the waving of the Omer, holiness remains upon all food of the entire year.
The Omer elevates the year’s sustenance.
שיהי' שורה בו קדושה.
So that holiness rests upon it.
The blessing persists throughout all consumption.
ושלא יתגשמו ע"י האכילה.
And so that they not become coarse through eating.
Holiness guards against spiritual dullness born of materiality.
וזהו הרמז עומר מתיר במדינה שלא יהיו נאסרין ומקושרין בגשמיות לחם הארץ.
This is the hint: the Omer permits the produce in the land, so that they not become bound and tied to the materiality of the bread of the earth.
The Omer releases food from pure physicality, restoring its spiritual openness.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Passover aligns Israel with the root of divine blessing, represented by matzah and the Omer, enabling sanctification of the year’s sustenance and the land itself.
