Sustenance received face to face
lechem hapanim · shefa · parnasah · twelve tribes · Torah at the table
In the section of the lechem hapanim (showbread): "On the day of Shabbos he shall arrange it."
The Sfas Emes opens from the mitzvah of the showbread that was set out on the Shabbos in the Mishkan and Bais Hamikdash.
And it is testimony that the shefa (Divine flow) descends on Shabbos for all the days of work, and that the shefa descends from the Bais Hamikdash to all places, and that Bnei Yisrael, whose souls were chosen, draw down the shefa to all creatures.
The showbread testifies to three things at once: that all of the week's sustenance flows down on Shabbos, that it radiates outward from the Bais Hamikdash, and that Bnei Yisrael are the channel through which it reaches the whole world.
Therefore the Holy One, Blessed is He, commanded that Bnei Yisrael arrange twelve loaves on the holy Shulchan (Table).
Because Bnei Yisrael are this channel, Hashem gave them the avodah of setting out the loaves on the Shulchan.
And the matter is, as it is written: "Showbread (lechem panim) before Me always."
The phrase lechem panim — literally "bread of the face/inner-presence" — is the key: this is sustenance received "face to face," directly before Hashem.
For in truth the Holy One, Blessed is He, feeds and sustains all creatures.
Hashem provides for every creature in the world without exception.
But there are various intermediaries and causes, near and far, and some receive their parnasah (sustenance) in the aspect of "from behind," as if in passing.
Most of creation receives its provision indirectly, through layers of natural causes, in a "back-handed" way that conceals the Giver.
But Bnei Yisrael — the Holy One, Blessed is He, desired that they receive the shefa face to face.
Hashem wanted Bnei Yisrael to receive their sustenance openly and directly from Him, not through concealing intermediaries.
As it is brought (in the Gemara): "One who eats that which is not his own is ashamed to look at the giver in the face."
Chazal teach that bread of charity, received as a handout, leaves one embarrassed to meet the giver's gaze — the opposite of "face to face."
And the Holy One, Blessed is He, gave Bnei Yisrael Torah and mitzvos so that through their deeds they would merit to receive what they need, as is written elsewhere in the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory, in the explanation of the pasuk: "My bread for My fires, My pleasing aroma, you shall guard."
Through Torah and mitzvos Bnei Yisrael earn their sustenance by their own avodah, as the Chiddushei HaRim explained on the pasuk about the korbanos being Hashem's "bread."
That Bnei Yisrael should see that the shefa of parnasah descends from Above by way of a "pleasing aroma," etc.
Their task is to recognize that all sustenance comes down from Heaven as a "pleasing aroma," a refined, spiritual gift rather than mere physical bread.
Therefore the mitzvah is to arrange the loaves.
This is why the avodah is specifically to set the bread out in order.
And according to the order in which Bnei Yisrael arrange it, so does it come down from Above.
The way Bnei Yisrael below arrange the loaves determines the order in which the shefa flows down from Heaven — their act draws the corresponding Divine response.
And Bnei Yisrael merited this through the power of the Torah, as it is written: "Face to face Hashem spoke with you."
This "face to face" relationship was won at Har Sinai, where Hashem spoke to Bnei Yisrael directly.
Meaning: the way Hashem conducts Bnei Yisrael is in the aspect of "face to face."
The very mode of Hashem's hashgachah over Bnei Yisrael is this open, direct one.
And the twelve loaves correspond to the twelve Shevatim (Tribes).
The twelve loaves represent the twelve tribes of Bnei Yisrael.
For each tribe has its own particular order and path in the Torah.
Every Shevet has its own unique avenue and approach within Torah.
For the Torah has many tzirufim (permutations), and as is written, there are twelve permutations of the Name Havayah, and the entire Torah likewise is the Names of the Holy One, Blessed is He.
Just as the four-letter Name can be permuted in twelve ways, and the whole Torah is itself the Names of Hashem, so too there are twelve "permutations" of Torah — one for each tribe.
And it is written: "These words Hashem spoke to your entire assembly (kahal)."
The Torah was given to "your entire kahal" — a phrase the Sfas Emes will now read as a hint to the tribes.
A hint to the twelve Shevatim.
"Your entire kahal" alludes to all twelve tribes.
For each tribe is called a "kahal," as is brought in the Gemara.
Chazal teach that each individual Shevet bears the title kahal (congregation).
And so too it is written, "the heritage of the assembly (kehillas) of Yaakov" — in the plural form.
The Torah being called the "kehillas Yaakov" hints, through its plural connotation, at the many kehillos of the tribes.
[And perhaps the pure levonah (frankincense placed with the loaves) hints at the tribe of Levi, which is called the "assembly of the pious," and rises entirely to the Heights like the law of a Kohen's minchah; and in the Gemara there is a dispute whether the tribe of Levi is called a "kahal" — see there in Horayos.]
In a bracketed aside, the Sfas Emes suggests that the frankincense beside the loaves represents Levi, whose offering rises wholly to Hashem, noting the Talmudic dispute in Horayos about whether Levi counts as a kahal.
And the verse arranged the showbread and the Menorah after the festivals (Regalim).
The Torah deliberately places the laws of the showbread and Menorah right after the section of the Yamim Tovim.
For just as there are festivals (mo'ados) in the year.
Just as the dimension of time (the year) has its sacred festival points.
So too, in one parallel pattern, are olam (space), shanah (time), and nefesh (soul), and all of it follows the pattern of the twenty-two letters of the Torah, as is brought in Sefer Yetzirah.
Sefer Yetzirah teaches that the three realms of space, time, and soul are all structured by the twenty-two letters of the Torah, so each has corresponding "festival points."
And in the year (time) there are three Regalim, seven days of the week, and twelve Rashei Chodashim (New Moons).
Time contains three pilgrimage festivals, seven weekly days, and twelve months.
And in souls (nefesh) there are three Avos, seven shepherds (ro'im), and twelve Shevatim.
The realm of souls mirrors this exactly: three Patriarchs, the seven faithful shepherds, and the twelve tribes.
And in space (olam) there were, in the Bais Hamikdash, in the Heichal, the Mizbeach, the Shulchan, and the Menorah.
The realm of space is mirrored in the Heichal's vessels: the Altar, the Table, and the Menorah.
And the seven lamps.
The Menorah's seven lamps correspond to the seven days and seven shepherds.
And the twelve loaves.
The twelve loaves correspond to the twelve months and the twelve tribes — space, time, and soul all aligned.
And the Holy One, Blessed is He, through the Torah, handed over to Bnei Yisrael the entire hanhagah (conduct of the world).
By giving the Torah, Hashem entrusted Bnei Yisrael with the very governance of creation across all three realms.
And even now, when the Bais Hamikdash is destroyed, nevertheless through the Torah we are able to draw down the shefa in holiness.
Even in galus, without the Mikdash, Torah remains the channel through which we can still draw down holy sustenance.
And it is brought in the Mishnah: three who ate at one table and spoke words of Torah over it, it is as if they ate from the Table of the Omnipresent, as it is written: "This is the table that is before Hashem."
The Mishnah in Avos teaches that a table at which Torah was spoken becomes like the Shulchan of the Mikdash, "the table before Hashem."
If so, through the Torah one merits the aspect of lechem hapanim.
Through Torah spoken at one's table, the ordinary meal attains the level of the showbread.
Which is the penimiyus (inner dimension) of the shefa.
The lechem hapanim represents the inner, hidden essence of the Divine flow.
The opposite of "sacrifices of the dead" with no place, which have no inner life-force within them.
This stands in contrast to eating without Torah — "sacrifices to the dead" — empty consumption that contains no inner vitality.
And because they spoke words of Torah over it, they receive the inner shefa.
Speaking Torah at the meal draws down the inner, penimiyusdike dimension of the sustenance.
And the meaning of "spoke over it" is that the Torah is the essence (ikar) and rises above the table — like the saying that those whose Torah is fixed (keva) and whose work is incidental (arai), both this and that are sustained in their hands.
"Over it" implies that Torah is primary and the food secondary; when a person makes Torah his fixed center and his livelihood incidental, both his spiritual and material life succeed.
For when the Torah is the essence, one draws inner content even into the shefa of parnasah, as above.
When Torah is at the center, even one's material livelihood becomes infused with penimiyus — sustenance received "face to face" from Hashem.
Summary: The lechem hapanim teaches that Bnei Yisrael are the channel through which all sustenance flows from Hashem "face to face" rather than through concealing intermediaries. The twelve loaves mirror the twelve tribes and the parallel structure of space, time, and soul that Hashem entrusted to Klal Yisrael through the Torah. Even after the Churban, by making Torah the fixed center of one's table and life, a person draws down the inner, penimiyusdike dimension of his parnasah directly from Hashem.
