Tefillin Revealing Inner Torah

Bo · תרמ"ד (1883) · Essay 3

“Concerning the commandment of tefillin… that they shall be for a sign… and for a remembrance… so that the Torah of Hashem shall be in your mouth.”

The Sefat Emet opens by explaining the purpose of tefillin as creating a sign and remembrance that brings Torah into one’s mouth—that is, into expression and action.

“Know that the essence of tefillin is to awaken the letters that the Holy One inscribed in the souls of Israel, as it is said: the power of the soul in the body is like the sacred Names in parchment.”

Tefillin activate the divine letters already embedded within the Jewish soul, similar to how holy Names reside within a scroll.

“But through tefillin one can bring the Torah from potential into actuality—from the heart to the mouth.”

Tefillin serve as the mechanism that draws inner Torah outward into expression and speech.

“Therefore it is written that it is proper to study Torah while wearing tefillin.”

Because tefillin draw inner Torah outward, they enhance learning itself.

“And the hint here is: ‘so that the Torah of Hashem shall be in your mouth,’ for the tefillin assist in this.”

This verse hints that tefillin help bring Torah into articulation.

“This is the sign: through tefillin the inner illuminations emerge.”

Tefillin draw out the hidden spiritual light within a person.

“And it is a sign and testimony regarding the people of Israel.”

Tefillin serve as a visible witness to Israel’s inner spiritual identity.

“As our sages said on the verse, ‘And all the nations shall see that the Name of Hashem is called upon you’—this refers to the head tefillin.”

The tefillin manifest the divine Name in a way visible even to the nations.

“Therefore on Shabbat tefillin are unnecessary, for nothing resembles the radiance of a person’s face on Shabbat, when the garment of the Jew is purified and the letters of the soul can be revealed even without the mitzvah of tefillin.”

Shabbat itself refines the person so deeply that the inner letters shine without external aid.

“And there is an additional soul, which overcomes the covering of the garment that is the body.”

The extra Shabbat soul rises above the limitations of the physical body.

“Therefore it is also called ‘extra,’ for it has added strength over the strength of the body, as it is said: Shabbat is of the soul, not of the body.”

The “extra soul” grants surplus spiritual power that transcends the physical frame.

Summary: Tefillin awaken the divine letters within the Jewish soul and draw Torah from potential into expression. On Shabbat, the inner letters reveal themselves naturally through the extra soul, making tefillin unnecessary.
