Sukkos and the Four Minim as Unity in Diversity

Sukkos is a gathering for the sake of Heaven (kenisiah l'sheim Shomayim).

The Sefas Emes presents Sukkos as an "assembly" — a coming-together whose entire purpose is l'sheim Shomayim, for the sake of Hashem.

And the four species of the lulav are the aspect of a "dispute for the sake of Heaven" (machlokes l'sheim Shomayim).

The four minim, so different from one another, represent the idea of a machlokes l'sheim Shomayim — distinct types that nonetheless serve one higher purpose.

For it is written: "Gather together and I will tell you" (Bereishis 49:1) — this is the aspect of the gathering; therefore the Name of Heaven rests upon the sukkah.

Yaakov's call to his sons to "gather together" embodies this assembling. Because Sukkos is such a gathering for Hashem's sake, the Sheim Shomayim — Hashem's presence — comes to rest upon the sukkah.

And this is the flow of kedushah from above.

That resting of Hashem's Name is the downward shefa (flow) of holiness into the gathered community.

The "binding" (agudah) is the drawing down of ruach hakodesh, as it is written in the Zohar HaKadosh.

Binding the four minim into one agudah corresponds, per the Zohar, to drawing down ruach hakodesh — the unifying act channels holy spirit.

"Assemble and hear" (Bereishis 49:2) is the receiving that Bnei Yisrael receive.

The second call, "hikavtzu v'shimu," represents the receptive side — Bnei Yisrael gathering to receive the kedushah that flows from above.

For each one has his own individual path, like the Shevatim, among whom there was a dispute for the sake of Heaven.

Each person, like each of the twelve Shevatim, has his own distinct derech in avodas Hashem — a diversity that is itself a machlokes l'sheim Shomayim, differences aimed at one shared goal.

And all the particulars gathered together to become a "klal" that arises from the particulars.

These individual paths combine into a unified klal (collective) — a whole that is built specifically out of its diverse parts, not by erasing them.

And so too the species of the lulav, which are made into one bundle (agudah achas).

The four minim model this exactly: four different species bound into a single agudah, unity formed from variety.

And this is the meaning of "and you shall take for yourselves" (Vayikra 23:40) — which is the aspect of the "taking," "assemble and hear."

"Ulkachtem lachem" expresses this act of "taking" — the receptive gathering of "hikavtzu v'shimu," whereby the individual paths are drawn together into one bundle that receives Hashem's kedushah.

Summary: Sukkos is a gathering for the sake of Heaven upon which Hashem's presence rests, and the four minim embody a "machlokes l'sheim Shomayim" — like the twelve Shevatim, each Jew has his own distinct path in avodah, yet all the particulars unite into a single klal. Binding the species into one agudah draws down ruach hakodesh, so that the "taking" of the lulav models how diverse individuals assemble to receive the flow of kedushah as one.
