Torah and the unity of the assembly

It is brought in the Gemara that Yaakov asked for mercy that his name not be mentioned in their assembly: "Let my honor not be united" (Bereishis 49:6).

The Gemara teaches that Yaakov Avinu davened that his name not be associated with the assembly of Korach, as alluded to in his words "let my honor not be joined."

For behold, the Torah depends upon the gathering of Bnei Yisrael, as it is written: "Assemble the people for Me and I will let them hear My words" (Devarim 4:10), and it is written: "the inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov" (Devarim 33:4).

Kabbalas haTorah is bound up with the gathering together of Bnei Yisrael — Torah is given to a tzibbur, "the congregation of Yaakov," not to scattered individuals.

And we find that each individual tribe is also called a "congregation" (kahal).

Scripture refers to a single shevet on its own as a kahal, so there is a smaller form of assembly belonging to each tribe.

And there is the "congregation of Yaakov," which is the totality of all Bnei Yisrael.

Above the individual tribe stands the all-encompassing assembly — "the congregation of Yaakov" — that unites the whole of Klal Yisrael as one.

And these correspond to the aspects of Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh.

The two levels of assembly — the single tribe and the whole nation — parallel the times of Rosh Chodesh and Shabbos respectively.

For in each month there is a gathering through the power of a particular tribe, and on Shabbos Kodesh there is the aspect of the "congregation of Yaakov."

Each month is governed by its own shevet — a partial assembly — while Shabbos embodies the complete, unified gathering of the whole nation, "the congregation of Yaakov."

Therefore "on Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh it shall be opened" (Yechezkel 46:1).

The navi's vision of the gate that opens specifically on Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh reflects these two times of holy assembly.

And therefore the Torah was given on Shabbos, which is a time of assembly, as above.

Since the Torah requires the complete gathering of the nation, it was fittingly given on Shabbos — the time of "the congregation of Yaakov."

And Yaakov Avinu requested that the tribe of Levi not have an assembly of its own.

Yaakov davened that shevet Levi not constitute a separate, self-standing kahal — for that is precisely what Korach sought, to set himself apart.

And this is the meaning of "Let my honor not be united."

"Al techad kevodi" expresses Yaakov's plea that his honor — his name — not be drawn into a faction that breaks away from Klal Yisrael.

And the reason is that "in their anger they slew a man" (Bereishis 49:6) — for they are connected to the aspect of din (judgment), as is known; therefore "I will divide them within Yaakov" (Bereishis 49:7), and therefore they became Kohanim and Leviim to perform the avodah of the Mikdash on behalf of all Yisrael, not for themselves — and this is what Moshe said to them: "It is much for you, sons of Levi" (Bamidbar 16:7).

Because Levi is rooted in the middah of din (strict judgment), Yaakov decreed they be dispersed within the nation; their avodah in the Mikdash is performed as agents for all of Klal Yisrael, never as a separate group for themselves — which is exactly the rebuke Moshe leveled at Korach.

Summary: The Torah is given to the gathered nation — "the congregation of Yaakov" — not to a breakaway faction; Yaakov davened that Levi never form a separate assembly, and so the Kohanim and Leviim serve in the Mikdash on behalf of all Yisrael rather than for themselves, the very flaw of Korach's rebellion.
