Unity above individual boundaries vs. Korach
"In the morning Hashem will make known [who is His]" (Bamidbar 16:5) — Rashi explains, from the Midrash: just as it is impossible to change the boundary that Hashem set between evening and morning, etc.
Moshe answered Korach that "in the morning" Hashem would reveal who truly belongs to Him. Rashi, citing the Midrash, explains that just as the fixed boundary between day and night cannot be altered, so too the boundaries of kehunah and leadership that Hashem established cannot be overturned.
For "olam, shanah, nefesh" (space, time, soul) all follow one pattern: just as there are distinct times — evening and morning — as in the verse, "He set a fixed law and a time for them, that they should not deviate from their task," and each one keeps its watch, as we say, "rejoicing and glad to do the will of their Maker."
The Sefas Emes invokes the three dimensions of creation — world (space), year (time), and soul. All three operate by the same principle of fixed, assigned roles. Just as time is divided into appointed periods of evening and morning that never deviate — like the heavenly bodies that Hashem set in their courses, joyfully fulfilling their function — so too every element of creation has its set place.
And likewise every place has its own unique character, and likewise every soul.
Carrying the parallel through the other two dimensions: in the realm of space, each place has its distinct nature, and in the realm of soul, each neshamah has its own unique role and identity.
But Hashem is the King to whom peace belongs, as it is written, "He makes peace in His heights," and as it is written, "You open Your hand [and satisfy] the desire of every living thing" (Tehillim 145:16).
Despite all these separate, distinct boundaries, Hashem is the King of shalom who harmonizes them. Just as He "makes peace in His heights" — reconciling opposing celestial forces — He sustains every creature according to its own need, opening His hand to satisfy the ratzon of each living thing.
For when an illumination descends from above, it shines upon each one according to what he is, and through this peace is made among them.
When divine light flows down, it does not flatten all distinctions but illuminates each being in accordance with its particular nature. This very accommodation — each receiving exactly its own portion — is what creates harmony among all the different parts of creation.
And Hashem gave us a portion in this wholeness, as it is written: "He shall bless His people with peace" (Tehillim 29:11).
Hashem granted Bnei Yisrael a share in this unifying perfection — the capacity to hold many differences in harmony — as expressed in the blessing that Hashem blesses His people specifically with shalom.
"And may He grant you peace" (Bamidbar 6:26).
The culmination of Birkas Kohanim is the granting of shalom — the same gift of harmony and wholeness.
Therefore He gave the Shabbos, in which there is the perfection of time (shleimus hazman).
In the dimension of time (shanah), Hashem gave Shabbos as the point of perfection and unity, the day in which time reaches its wholeness.
And Eretz Yisrael and the Bais Hamikdash, in which there is the perfection of space (shleimus ha'olam).
In the dimension of space (olam), Eretz Yisrael and especially the Bais Hamikdash are the points of perfection — the center where all places find their unity.
And the neshamah yeseirah (extra soul), in which there is the perfection of the souls (shleimus hanefashos).
In the dimension of soul (nefesh), the neshamah yeseirah granted on Shabbos is the point of perfection, where the distinctions between souls are unified.
And this is "He spreads a sukkah of peace (sukkas shalom)" — that we have a portion in the aspect of peace.
The bracha "Who spreads a sukkah of peace over us" on Shabbos expresses that we have been given a share in this divine harmony — the unifying shalom that reconciles all the distinct boundaries of creation.
Therefore on Shabbos it is not written "and it was evening… and it was morning," for it is wholeness and unity.
Each weekday of creation is marked by "evening and morning" — the boundary and division that define time. But Shabbos has no such notation, because it transcends division: it is the day of shleimus and achdus, of completeness and oneness.
As it is written that it is "the secret of One (raza d'echad)."
The Zohar describes Shabbos as the "secret of echad" — the mystery of divine oneness — which is why it carries no boundary of evening and morning.
And in truth the souls differ in each individual according to the form of the body, as the Mishnah says: "to tell the greatness of the Creator of the world — for they are all stamped from one mold, yet no two faces are alike."
The Mishnah (Sanhedrin) marvels that although Hashem fashions all people from a single "die," no two faces are identical — testifying to His greatness. Likewise, souls take on distinct expressions according to the individual body in which they are clothed.
And each one is a unique matter.
Every person constitutes a distinct, unrepeatable expression of the divine, with his own particular avodah and place.
And for this reason there is no perfect wholeness in this world, as it is said that "all is strife (ktata)," because each one has something that his fellow lacks.
This very individuality is the source of conflict in olam hazeh. Because no two people are alike and each possesses something the other does not, friction and dispute arise — true unity cannot be fully realized in this world.
And for this reason too it is called "the world of falsehood (alma d'shikra)."
The same fragmentation is why this world is termed a "world of falsehood" — the Sefas Emes now explains in what sense.
For truth is complete from every side, and since there is a deficiency in each one relative to the form of the other, it is not truth in its wholeness.
Absolute emes must be whole and consistent from every angle. But since each individual is "lacking" from the perspective of another's form — no one contains the whole picture — no single being embodies complete truth. Hence this fragmented world is called a world of falsehood.
But the neshamah yeseirah has no variation in it; therefore it does not clothe itself in the body, but comes only according to the merit that a person purifies in himself — and it is the "spreading of peace," as above.
The extra Shabbos soul, by contrast, is uniform and undifferentiated — it carries no individual variation. For that reason it does not become enclothed within the limiting body but rests upon a person in proportion to the merit and purity he has attained. This unchanging, unifying neshamah yeseirah is itself the "sukkah of peace" that brings shleimus.
And Hashem created the world by way of nature, each one according to what he is, as Chazal said on "the eyes of all [look to You]… You give them their food in its time" — to each one in his proper time.
In the natural order, Hashem provides for each creature individually, according to its own nature and at its own appointed moment, as the posuk says He gives each its sustenance "in its time."
And this is the way of nature and of each one's free choice — even the wicked person according to his way, and about this it is said, "from his ways shall he be sated"; but above him is the good man, as it is written, "You open Your hand… and satisfy the desire of every living thing (umasbia l'chol chai ratzon)" — which is the flow of perfection from above nature, revealed on the day of Shabbos, as it is written, "on the day of Shabbos it shall be opened" (Yechezkel 46:1).
Within nature, every person — even a rasha — receives according to his own path and free choice, "sated from his own ways." But there is a higher level, the "good man," who receives from the verse "You open Your hand and satisfy the ratzon of every living thing." This is a flow of shleimus that comes from above nature, beyond the fragmentation of individual paths, and it is specifically revealed on Shabbos — "the inner gate is opened on the day of Shabbos."
And this was the difference between the aspect of Moshe and Aharon and the assembly of Korach.
The Sefas Emes now applies the whole framework to the dispute of Korach, distinguishing the level of Moshe and Aharon from that of Korach and his followers.
For they [Korach's assembly] had only an individual perception, each one according to his own way.
Korach and his company operated only on the level of individual, particular attainment — each grasping kedushah from his own private vantage point and path. They remained within the fragmented, "natural" mode of separate selves.
But Moshe and Aharon are the ones who receive the flow and channel it to all of Klal Yisrael, as it is said of them, "your two breasts" (Shir HaShirim 4:5).
Moshe and Aharon, by contrast, did not function as separate individuals seeking their own portion. They were the conduits who receive the divine shefa from above and nourish all of Klal Yisrael — likened to "two breasts" that feed the entire nation.
Just as they expounded regarding His Name "Sha-dai" — that there is "enough (dai)" in His Godliness for every creature.
Chazal read the divine Name "Sha-dai" as "she-dai" — that Hashem has "enough" Godliness to sustain all of creation, a wellspring sufficient for every being without diminishment.
So too there is "enough" in the Torah of Moshe and Aharon for all the souls of Bnei Yisrael.
Just as Hashem's Godliness is "enough" for every creature, the Torah and avodah channeled through Moshe and Aharon contain "enough" to nourish and unite every single neshamah in Klal Yisrael. This is the all-encompassing, peace-bringing leadership that Korach — who saw only from his own narrow, individual perspective — failed to recognize.
Summary: Hashem set fixed, unchangeable boundaries throughout creation — in space (olam), time (shanah), and soul (nefesh) — yet as King of shalom He harmonizes them, sending light to each according to its own nature, which is what creates peace among them. He gave Bnei Yisrael a share in this perfection through the points of unity in each dimension: Shabbos (time), Eretz Yisrael and the Mikdash (space), and the neshamah yeseirah (soul). Because individuality is the root of strife and even "falsehood" in this fragmented world, true wholeness comes only from the unchanging neshamah yeseirah and the supernatural flow revealed on Shabbos. This was Korach's error: he and his assembly grasped only their own individual perception, whereas Moshe and Aharon were the channels who receive the divine flow and provide "enough" Torah to nourish and unify all the souls of Klal Yisrael.
