The indestructible point of truth in every Jew

In Rashi and the Gemara: it is not written "ben Yisrael" (regarding Korach's lineage), because Yaakov begged mercy for himself that his name not be mentioned in connection with the machlokes (dispute).

When the Torah traces Korach's ancestry it stops short of naming Yaakov, since Yaakov had davened that his name not be associated with so destructive a quarrel.

But what is the meaning of "mercy for himself"?

The Sefas Emes asks: why is this framed as Yaakov asking mercy for his own sake, rather than simply distancing his name?

Rather, the point is that Yaakov Avinu planted a point of emes (truth) within Bnei Yisrael, and concerning this he prayed that it should never be able to become spoiled.

Yaakov's "mercy for himself" was really a request to protect the inner point of truth he had implanted in his descendants — that this nekudah remain incorruptible forever.

Therefore Chazal said: "Even though he has sinned, he is still a Yisrael."

Because of this indestructible inner point, a Jew never loses his essential identity, even when he sins.

And "all of Yisrael have a share in the World to Come."

That same enduring point of truth guarantees every Jew a portion in olam haba.

That is to say: when a person sins, that point withdraws from him, but he cannot cause it itself to sin, for it is the aspect of "Titen emes l'Yaakov" ("Grant truth to Yaakov" — Michah 7:20).

Sin can hide or withdraw the inner point from a person, but it can never corrupt the point itself — it remains the pure "truth of Yaakov" untouched.

And my grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory, explained that emes is something that endures forever — for "waters that deceive," whose flow fails even once, are called "kazav" (falsehood), the opposite of truth.

The Chiddushei HaRim defines truth as that which lasts permanently: anything that gives out even a single time is, by that very lapse, falsehood. Truth, by contrast, never fails.

Therefore, when the lineage is traced regarding standing on the duchan (the Levites' platform for song), it does say "ben Yisrael," because this portion attaches itself for good and not for ill.

In a context of holiness and song, the connection to Yaakov is named — for the point of truth joins itself only to what is good, never to strife.

And this is the meaning of "that his name not be mentioned in connection with the machlokes," for the power of Yaakov is not revealed in dispute, but only when people are bound together in achdus (unity).

Yaakov's strength — the inner point of truth — can shine only amid unity. In a quarrel it stays hidden, which is why his name does not appear there.

Therefore, regarding Shabbos Kodesh it is written, "And I will feed you the heritage of Yaakov" (Yeshayahu 58:14), for on the holy Shabbos we merit the illumination of the point of truth, which is the heritage of Yaakov.

Shabbos is when this nekudah of truth shines openly; the "heritage of Yaakov" that nourishes us on Shabbos is precisely that inner point.

For although every individual Jew has a share of this.

The point of truth is the possession of every Jew all week long.

Yet on Shabbos it becomes revealed and shines, giving endurance and sustenance to the one who serves Hashem, as it is written, "And I will feed you the heritage of Yaakov."

On Shabbos the hidden point emerges into the open, radiating spiritual nourishment and sustaining the oved Hashem with the heritage of Yaakov.

Summary: Yaakov planted an indestructible point of emes within every Jew. Sin may cause it to withdraw, but can never corrupt it — which is why a Jew remains a Jew even after sinning and retains his share in olam haba. This power of truth reveals itself only in unity, never in machlokes, which is why Yaakov's name is absent from Korach's quarrel; and on Shabbos Kodesh it shines openly as "the heritage of Yaakov," nourishing the one who serves Hashem.
