Torah unites the souls of Yisrael
In the Midrash Tanchuma on "a good acquisition (lekach tov)" (Mishlei 4:2): a parable of two merchants, one with silk and one with peppercorns, etc.; they exchanged — for what is in the hand of one is not in the hand of the other.
Two merchants each had a different commodity, so by trading, each gained what he previously lacked.
And with talmidei chachamim (Torah scholars): this one learns Seder Zera'im and that one Seder Mo'ed; they taught one another, and now each has two orders in his hand, etc.
Unlike material goods, when two scholars share their learning each ends up holding both portions — Torah multiplies when it is exchanged.
The matter is that every Yid has his own unique portion in the Torah, and the Torah joins together the souls of Bnei Yisrael.
Each Jew possesses a particular share of Torah, and sharing those portions binds the souls of Bnei Yisrael into one.
As it is written, "(The Torah of Hashem is) perfect, restoring the soul" (Tehillim 19:8).
The Torah is "perfect" — whole — precisely because it gathers all the individual portions and restores the soul.
And they become a single unity through the power of the Torah, as it says, "the inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov" (Devarim 33:4).
Through Torah the many become one; it is the shared inheritance of the entire assembly of Yaakov.
And they receive from one another the particular understanding (da'as) that is unique to each one.
Each Jew imparts to the others his own special insight in Torah, and so all are enriched.
And it is written, "Hashem will give strength to His people; Hashem will bless His people with peace" (Tehillim 29:11).
The "strength" (Torah) leads to the blessing of peace — the unity that Torah creates.
The Name of the Holy One is Shalom (Peace).
Hashem Himself is called "Peace."
"The King to whom peace belongs."
Peace, in its essence, belongs to Hashem the King.
"He who makes peace in His heights."
Hashem unites opposing forces on high, making peace among them.
And likewise the Torah is the Names of the Holy One.
Since the Torah is woven of Hashem's Names, it carries His quality of peace.
Therefore through the Torah one merits peace.
Because Torah is bound up with Hashem, who is Peace, it is the means by which we attain shalom and unity.
And so too it is written, "He calls them all by name" (Yeshayahu 40:26) — because His Name, Yisborach, encompasses all the host above.
Hashem's Name embraces and includes every one of the heavenly hosts, calling each by name.
Therefore they are joined together through the Name.
The stars and hosts are unified by being included within Hashem's all-encompassing Name.
So too the souls of Bnei Yisrael are joined together through the Torah.
Just as the Name unites the heavenly hosts, the Torah (which is His Name) unites the souls of Bnei Yisrael.
And likewise in the donations to the Mishkan, which was made through the contribution of every individual, and they were joined together through the Mishkan to become one.
The Mishkan, built from the gifts of all, fused the many individuals into a single unified whole.
And then they merited the resting of the Shechinah.
Only once they were unified through the Mishkan did the Shechinah come to dwell among them.
And in truth the unity must exist in deed, in speech, and in thought; in the Mishkan and Mikdash they were unified in deed.
True unity must be achieved on all three planes — action, speech, and thought — and the Mishkan accomplished it on the plane of action.
And through the Torah, in speech.
Torah, learned and spoken, unites Bnei Yisrael on the plane of speech.
And through the Holy One, in thought.
Cleaving to Hashem Himself unifies Bnei Yisrael on the deepest plane — that of thought.
As it is written, "seventy souls" (nefesh) — in the singular.
The Torah counts the seventy descendants of Yaakov as a single "soul," signifying their essential oneness.
Because they serve one God.
Their unity flows from all of them serving the one Hashem.
This is the aspect of the ratzon (will) and the longing in the heart.
This deepest unity is the shared inner will and yearning of the heart toward Hashem.
That they all turn toward Him, Yisborach.
When every heart is directed to the one Hashem, all become truly one.
And through this they become "one nation" (goy echad).
By all turning their will toward the one Hashem, Bnei Yisrael become a single united nation.
Summary: Unlike material goods, where an exchange leaves each party with only one thing, when two talmidei chachamim share their learning each ends up holding both — for every Yid has a unique portion in Torah, and exchanging those portions joins the souls of Bnei Yisrael into one. Because the Torah is the Names of Hashem, whose Name is Shalom and encompasses all, it brings peace and unity. This oneness must be realized on three planes: in deed (the Mishkan, built from everyone's gifts), in speech (Torah), and in thought (cleaving to Hashem) — and when all turn their hearts' will toward the one Hashem, Bnei Yisrael become "one nation."
