Unity defeats Amalek and rebuilds the Mikdash
And the mitzvos that Chazal instituted [for Purim] are the reading of the Megillah and [sending] portions.
The Sefas Emes turns to the rabbinic mitzvos of Purim — krias haMegillah and mishloach manos — and seeks their inner meaning.
For it is taught: "His gathering and the gathering of his sons saved him from the hand of Esav and his chiefs."
The Midrash teaches that Yaakov's unity with his children protected them from Esav — and Amalek descends from Esav.
And when there is achdus (unity) among Bnei Yisrael, that wicked one cannot rule over us — only when unity is lacking [can he].
Amalek's power to harm Bnei Yisrael depends entirely on disunity among them; where there is achdus, he has no grip.
Therefore [Haman] said that they are "scattered and dispersed," so that he could rule over them.
Haman's claim that the Jews were "scattered and dispersed" (Esther 3:8) was his strategy — he counted on their fragmentation to gain power over them.
And Esther said: "Go, gather [all the Jews]."
Esther's countermeasure was the opposite of Haman's claim — to reunite the people through gathering them together.
And so the gathering was fulfilled, as it says: "They gathered and stood for their lives" (Esther 9:16).
The unity Esther called for actually came about — the Jews assembled together and rose to defend themselves.
And through the power of the gathering and the assembly, the salvation came about.
The yeshuah (deliverance) of Purim was achieved specifically through the renewed achdus of Klal Yisrael.
And therefore they merited Torah, as it is written: "Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear [My words]" (Devarim 4:10).
Because they achieved unity, they merited a renewed acceptance of Torah — for Torah too was given only when the people were gathered as one.
And Chazal said: "And you shall love your fellow as yourself" — this is a great principle in the Torah.
Ahavas Yisrael, the love between fellow Jews, is the foundational principle that binds the whole Torah together (Rashi, Vayikra 19:18).
And "stood for their lives (nafsham)" means that they received the ruach, which is above the nefesh, and is the aspect of Torah.
"Standing" reflects rising from the level of nefesh to the higher level of ruach — the dimension of Torah that elevates a person beyond mere existence.
Therefore it is written "and stood (amod)," for there is a "world of sitting," the aspect of nefesh.
"Sitting" symbolizes the lower, settled state of the nefesh — the ordinary plane of soul-life.
And "standing" is the aspect of the ruach.
"Standing" represents the elevated, aroused state of the ruach, the higher soul-power awakened through Torah.
And this too is true: that through accepting Torah and mitzvos one merits the true unity — and this is also hinted in "a great principle (klal) in the Torah."
The relationship runs both ways: unity brings Torah, and Torah brings unity. The word "klal" (principle) also means "to include/unite," hinting that Torah itself is what gathers Bnei Yisrael into one.
And because, after the decree, they accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah and mitzvos,
After Haman's decree was annulled, Bnei Yisrael reaccepted the Torah willingly — "kiyemu v'kiblu" (Esther 9:27).
they merited to be gathered and to "stand for their lives," and this was the preparation for the Second Bais Hamikdash.
The renewed achdus and acceptance of Torah at Purim laid the spiritual groundwork for building the Second Bais Hamikdash.
Therefore, through baseless hatred (sinas chinam) the [Second] Bais Hamikdash was destroyed.
Since the Second Bais Hamikdash was built on the foundation of unity, its opposite — sinas chinam — is precisely what brought about its destruction.
And the hint in "sinas chinam" is that all division of hearts comes about through casting off the yoke of Torah and mitzvos, as they said: "chinam" means "without mitzvos."
Chazal expound "chinam" (free, gratuitous) as "without mitzvos." The Sefas Emes reads sinas chinam as hatred that stems from abandoning Torah and mitzvos — for it is Torah that binds hearts together, and its absence is what splits them apart.
Summary: The Purim mitzvos of Megillah and mishloach manos express the theme of achdus. Amalek can only prevail when Bnei Yisrael are "scattered and dispersed"; Esther's call to "gather" restored their unity, which brought the salvation and a renewed acceptance of Torah — rising from nefesh to ruach. This unity-through-Torah was the foundation of the Second Bais Hamikdash, and its opposite, sinas chinam born of casting off Torah and mitzvos, is what later destroyed it.
