Dispute for the sake of Heaven

"And [five of you] shall pursue [a hundred]… and five hundred…" (Vayikra 26:8).

The Torah promises that a small number of Bnei Yisrael will rout a far greater enemy — five chasing a hundred, and a hundred chasing ten thousand.

Rashi explains: those few who keep the Torah are not comparable to the many who keep it.

The proportions are not even — when more people keep the Torah together, their collective strength grows out of all proportion to their numbers.

And this is the "pursuit" itself — the pursuit of truth, to wage the war of Hashem against Amalek.

The "pursuing" the verse speaks of is the active chasing after emes, fighting Hashem's battle against the force of Amalek and falsehood.

And every dispute must be for the sake of Heaven (l'shem Shomayim) and must include oneself within Klal Yisrael.

Even a battle "for truth" is only legitimate when it is waged purely l'shem Shomayim and when the one waging it binds himself to the whole community of Bnei Yisrael rather than fighting for himself.

And the two matters are placed side by side in the Mishnah: "Every gathering that is for the sake of Heaven…" and "every dispute that is for the sake of Heaven…" (Avos 4:11; 5:17).

The Mishnah deliberately pairs the ideas of a gathering l'shem Shomayim and a dispute l'shem Shomayim, hinting that the two depend on one another.

For the dispute must draw its strength from the gathering — from love of Yisrael and of the Holy One.

A machlokes for the sake of Heaven is only valid when it is powered by ahavas Yisrael and love of Hashem — by the unity of a "gathering," not by division.

And so it is written: "And five of you shall pursue…" — "of you," together as one.

The verse stresses "of you" — the victory of the few comes specifically when they fight as a united part of Klal Yisrael, drawing on the collective strength of love and unity.

Summary: The promise that a few will rout the many reflects the disproportionate power of Bnei Yisrael united in keeping the Torah. The "pursuit" is the pursuit of truth and the war against Amalek; but such a battle is only legitimate when waged purely l'shem Shomayim, drawing its strength from ahavas Yisrael, unity, and love of Hashem.
