Sanctifying Strength Through Unity

“In the verse: ‘Simeon and Levi are brothers; into their council may my soul not come.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by questioning the meaning of Jacob’s distancing himself from the “council” of Simeon and Levi.
Rashi explains: When the tribe of Simeon gathered and said to Moses, ‘The daughter of Jethro—who permitted her to you?’
Rashi identifies their “council” with a later episode, where they confronted Moses regarding his marriage.
And why did Rashi need to publicize their words in a way that seems derogatory, Heaven forbid?
The Sefat Emet asks why Rashi would reveal something that casts them negatively.
But since it is called a “secret,” they certainly did not come with brazen wickedness, Heaven forbid.
The term “secret” indicates a sincere, inner intention rather than rebellion.
Rather, they wished to draw the forces of the Other Side toward holiness, and they wanted to act as Moses did.
Their intent was spiritual elevation, attempting to redeem unholy forces as Moses elevated Jethro’s daughter.
But not everyone who wishes to take the Name may come and take it.
Spiritual daring requires Divine authorization; they overreached.
And truly, these tribes possessed the power of might and could have elevated everything to holiness.
Simeon and Levi inherently carried great spiritual strength.
And this is the meaning of “brothers,” as the Sages interpreted “We have a little sister” as implying joining and attachment.
“Brotherhood” here means spiritual bonding and the power to unite disparate forces.
As explained in Parashat Lech Lecha.
This teaching appears earlier in the Sefat Emet’s commentary.
But this power must operate from within the collective of Israel.
Their spiritual work cannot be done independently; it requires national unity.
Therefore it says: “I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.”
Their powers are dispersed so that they function only as part of the whole people.
And this power remained with the tribe of Levi and with Moses, who was the teacher of all Israel.
The concentrated form of this power passed to Levi and Moses, whose leadership encompassed all Israel.
And it is also possible that through the sale of Joseph, they were unable to properly rectify this secret.
The earlier sin of Joseph’s sale disrupted their capacity for proper spiritual repair.
Therefore it is written, “In their anger they slew...”
The Torah hints that their unrectified zeal led to destructive expression.
And certainly even these words were blessings.
Jacob’s harsh statements ultimately served as spiritual blessings.
As it is written: “He blessed them, each according to his blessing.”
Jacob’s final words to his sons were all fundamentally blessings.
And it is written, “Each according to his blessing,” meaning he arranged for each the blessing appropriate to him.
Each tribe received a blessing tailored to its unique spiritual role.
Therefore he entrusted the power of Simeon and Levi to the collective of Israel, as it is written:
Their spiritual capacity was distributed among the nation as a whole.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Simeon and Levi acted not out of wickedness but out of intense spiritual zeal aimed at elevating unholy forces. Their failure stemmed from acting outside the unity of Israel and from the unresolved effects of Joseph’s sale. Jacob’s dispersal of their power was itself a blessing, redirecting their intense spiritual capacity into the collective body of Israel, ultimately preserved through Levi and Moses.
