Unity as Divine Strength
Unity · Jacob · Esau · Divine Assistance · Holiness
“In the Midrash: ‘In your outcry, your gatherings will save you.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which teaches that Israel’s salvation comes through its collective unity.
“It was taught: His gathering and the gathering of his sons saved them from Esau.”
Jacob’s unity with his children is portrayed as the spiritual force that shielded them from Esau’s threat.
“For the essence of victory in war comes from the power of gathering and unity.”
Victory arises not merely from strength but from inner cohesion and shared purpose.
“And then heavenly assistance rests upon them.”
Unity invites divine support, completing human effort with divine aid.
“As it is written: ‘The Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp to save you.’”
Divine presence dwells specifically within a unified camp.
“Therefore the priest anointed for war proclaims ‘Shema Yisrael,’ for through the merit of Shema Yisrael you are worthy to be saved.”
The recitation of Shema symbolizes the nation gathering into a single-hearted unity.
“‘Shema’ is unity.”
The act of hearing and proclaiming oneness creates communal oneness.
“And Jacob, peace be upon him, had great strength.”
Jacob possessed immense spiritual power of his own.
“Nevertheless, the main victory came through unity.”
Even Jacob’s personal strength was secondary to the power of collective oneness.
“And then Esau went to a different land.”
Esau’s departure reflects the dissolving of his forces when faced with Israel’s unity.
“For it is said: A gathering for the sake of heaven endures.”
Spiritual cohesion leads to long-term stability.
“Therefore Jacob remained in unity.”
Jacob’s unity was lasting because it was rooted in divine purpose.
“But the wicked one came at first with four hundred men, and in the end they separated from him.”
Esau’s unity was superficial and could not endure.
“As it is written regarding the Other Side: it begins in connection but ends in separation.”
Negative forces appear united but ultimately fall apart.
“Therefore it is written: ‘They flee though none pursues.’”
Disunity leads to fear and collapse even without an external threat.
“Though the wicked were first in unity, in the end Scripture speaks of them in the plural, concluding in separation.”
The shift to plural language reflects the breakdown of their cohesion.
“But the righteous, like a young lion, are confident: they begin separated but end in union.”
The righteous unify over time through shared devotion to God.
“And regarding Jacob it is written: ‘These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph,’ for he is the one who unifies and joins all the tribes.”
Joseph embodies the power to create harmony among Jacob’s descendants.
“To teach that although his offspring were many, they remained in single unity.”
Their multiplicity did not undermine their essential oneness.
“As it is written: ‘Seventy soul’—in the singular.”
The Torah’s singular form highlights their unified identity.
“But concerning Esau it is written ‘souls’—in the plural.”
Esau’s descendants lacked that essential unity.
“For Jacob’s gathering was for the sake of heaven.”
His unity was spiritually grounded and therefore enduring.
“And the meaning of ‘it will endure’ is that they remained in unity.”
Endurance manifests as lasting cohesiveness.
“And another explanation: it will endure because the name of heaven rests upon that gathering.”
Unity rooted in divine presence becomes permanent and sanctified.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob’s strength and Israel’s salvation flow from unity for the sake of heaven, which attracts divine presence and creates enduring spiritual cohesion. Esau’s unity, by contrast, lacks holy purpose and therefore dissolves.
