Korach and the two holinesses of Yisrael
Korach · two holinesses · Shabbos · Moshe Rabbeinu · kedushah
On the pasuk, "the entire congregation are all holy and Hashem is in their midst — so why do you raise yourselves up?" (Bamidbar 16:3).
The Sefas Emes takes up Korach's challenge to Moshe and Aharon: if everyone is holy, why should they elevate themselves above the people? He will show what truth lay in Korach's claim and where it went wrong.
Surely these words of Korach too are true — that the entire congregation are holy.
The Sefas Emes concedes that Korach was not simply lying: it is genuinely true that all of Bnei Yisrael possess holiness.
But it is brought that the Holy One, blessed be He, gave Yisrael two holinesses; see there in the Midrash on "Kedoshim."
The flaw in Korach's argument is that there is not just one kedushah but two distinct holinesses given to Bnei Yisrael, as the Midrash teaches.
And this holiness of the whole of Yisrael is one holiness.
The kedushah that Korach invoked — the holiness shared equally by every member of Klal Yisrael — is real, but it is only the first of the two.
But in the higher holiness Korach and his company had no portion, and concerning this it is written, "and Aharon was set apart to sanctify him as holy of holies" (Divrei HaYamim I 23:13) — thus there are two holinesses.
There is a second, higher kedushah — the one Aharon was set apart for as "holy of holies." In that elevated holiness Korach had no share, which proves the existence of two separate levels of holiness.
And similarly, terumas maaser — "a tithe from the tithe" (the Levi's tithe given to the Kohen).
The Sefas Emes brings an illustration from the laws of tithing, where one level of sanctity is taken out of another, demonstrating the same two-tiered structure.
"The tenth shall be holy" — automatically, the tithe-from-the-tithe is "holy of holies."
If the ordinary tithe is "holy," then the further tithe separated from it is a holiness drawn from within a holiness — a "holy of holies," a concentrated higher sanctity.
And this holiness is a gift from Heaven.
The higher kedushah cannot be claimed or seized; it is bestowed specifically as a gift from above, unlike the baseline holiness shared by all.
And this is the holiness of Shabbos, of which it is written, "to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you" (Shemos 31:13).
Shabbos is the model of this higher, given holiness: Hashem Himself sanctifies the day — "I am Hashem who sanctifies you" — rather than it being generated by Bnei Yisrael.
And concerning the company of Korach it is written, "those summoned to the appointed time (ker")uei moed)" — this is the holiness within Yisrael, as we say "who sanctifies Yisrael and the festal seasons," for it is Yisrael who sanctify the seasons.
Korach's followers are described as "kerei moed," linking them to the holiness of the festivals (moadim). But the kedushah of the moadim is the lower type — for, unlike Shabbos, the Yamim Tovim are sanctified by Bnei Yisrael themselves through fixing the calendar ("mekadesh Yisrael v'hazmanim"). This was the kedushah Korach grasped.
But the holiness of Shabbos is above this.
The holiness of Shabbos, sanctified by Hashem alone, stands on a higher plane than the holiness of the moadim, which depends on Bnei Yisrael's sanctification.
And therefore it is brought that Korach disputed concerning Shabbos.
This is why the tradition states that Korach's dispute touched on Shabbos: he was contesting precisely the higher, given holiness that Shabbos represents.
For on Shabbos there is this additional holiness, and there is an ascent for Bnei Yisrael to the upper world.
Shabbos carries an extra, supernal kedushah that lifts Bnei Yisrael up to the higher world — an elevation that comes as a gift from above, not by their own initiative.
And Korach [and his company] surely knew that the holiness of Moshe Rabbeinu is higher, but they said "we will not go up" and wished to cling to the lower level.
Korach was not ignorant — he knew full well that Moshe's holiness was on a higher plane. Yet he deliberately refused to ascend ("lo na'aleh"), choosing instead to remain attached only to the lower, self-generated kedushah of the congregation.
And this is the meaning of "why do you raise yourselves up" — since they saw that the congregation cannot be drawn after the levels of Moshe Rabbeinu.
Korach's complaint "why do you raise yourselves up" stemmed from this: he observed that the people as a whole could not reach Moshe's lofty level, and concluded that there was therefore no point in striving for it at all.
But in truth it was all by the (Divine) word, and such is His will, may His Name be blessed — that Bnei Yisrael should have a portion and connection even in the higher holiness.
Korach erred, for Hashem's express will was that Bnei Yisrael should indeed have a share and a bond even in the higher kedushah, through their connection to Moshe and Aharon — not settle for the lower level alone.
Even though it is not in completeness, according to the deeds of those below.
True, the people cannot attain this higher holiness in full by their own merits — but a partial connection to it is still both possible and desired.
And concerning this it is said, "Be a tail to lions and do not be a head to foxes" (Avos 4:15).
Better to be even the lowest part ("tail") of the higher group — those striving toward Moshe's level — than to be the leader ("head") of the lower one. Korach chose to be "head to the foxes," when he should have sought even the humblest connection to the "lions."
And the section of tzitzis was placed adjacent, before the section of Korach, because tzitzis is the lower level, which is the aspect of a pure heart (lev tahor) — the thirty-two (lev) pathways — and Levi is "pure"; and in truth, according to the purity one attains the holiness, as it is written "and you shall be holy" — and this is the lower holiness, as explained.
The Torah places tzitzis right before Korach because tzitzis embodies the lower level: the "lev tahor," a pure heart (the letters lamed-beis equaling 32, the "thirty-two pathways"). Levi too is associated with purity (taharah). Through purity one earns holiness ("and you shall be holy") — but this is specifically the lower, attainable holiness, reached by one's own effort of self-purification.
But tefillin is the higher holiness, like the "sign" (os) of Shabbos.
In contrast to tzitzis, tefillin represents the higher kedushah — it is called an "os," a sign, just as Shabbos is an "os." Both are given holinesses from above.
And it is through the power of the Torah, as explained elsewhere, that the two holinesses are: the holiness of the mitzvos and the holiness of the Torah.
The higher holiness flows from the power of the Torah itself. The two kedushos correspond to two domains: the holiness attained through performing mitzvos (the lower, self-generated level) and the loftier holiness of the Torah itself (the given level).
And this is the aspect of Moshe Rabbeinu — and in this Korach and his company were deficient.
The higher holiness of the Torah is embodied in Moshe Rabbeinu. This was precisely Korach's failure: by clinging only to the lower holiness of mitzvos and refusing to ascend toward the Torah-holiness of Moshe, he severed himself from the very level Hashem wanted Bnei Yisrael to be connected to.
Summary: Korach's claim that "all the congregation are holy" was true, but he ignored that Hashem gave Bnei Yisrael two holinesses: a lower kedushah shared by all and generated by their own purity and mitzvos (like the moadim, tzitzis, and the "pure heart" of Levi), and a higher kedushah given as a gift from above (like Shabbos, tefillin, and the Torah itself, embodied in Moshe Rabbeinu). Korach knowingly refused to ascend to the higher level, choosing to "be a head to foxes" rather than a "tail to lions" — whereas Hashem's will was that Bnei Yisrael cling, even partially, to that higher holiness through Moshe and Aharon.
