Shabbat Unity of Israel

Vayakhel · תרנ"ח (1897) · Essay 1

Shabbat · Jewish Unity · Moses · Holiness · Spiritual Elevation

“And Moses assembled…,” a hint that on Shabbat the Children of Israel become one congregation, as stated in the midrashim.

The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat reveals the innate unity of Israel, transforming them into a single spiritual community.

“Make assemblies for yourself to study the laws of Shabbat and festivals.”

The gatherings for learning reflect and reinforce the deeper, inner unity awakened on Shabbat.

For the Children of Israel are truly a single unity.

This unity is their essential spiritual nature.

Only through spiritual residue and impurity does separation arise among them.

The Sefat Emet attributes disunity to external obstructions, not to their true identity.

But on Shabbat, when the residue is nullified, they return to unity.

Shabbat clears away worldly distractions, letting Israel’s unity shine.

And Moses, master of Torah, unifies the Children of Israel.

Moses embodies the unifying power of Torah itself.

As it is written: “Moses commanded us the Torah… an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.”

This verse indicates that Torah empowers Israel to become a single congregation.

Meaning: he bequeathed to Israel the ability to be one congregation.

The unity of Israel is part of the spiritual inheritance Moses gave.

And on Shabbat the power of Moses and the power of Torah are revealed.

The clarity and illumination of Torah become more accessible on Shabbat.

Therefore they unite on this day.

The revelation of Torah power brings Israel into harmony.

And it is written: “Between Me and the Children of Israel it is a sign.”

Shabbat is an exclusive covenantal sign between God and Israel.

Meaning that the nations have no share in Shabbat.

This exclusivity allows its holiness to shine unimpeded.

Therefore on the holy Shabbat holiness is revealed.

Without external interference, divine holiness becomes manifest.

For it is written: “For on it He ceased from all His work that God created to do.”

This verse teaches that creation itself points to a realm beyond action.

Meaning: on weekdays holiness is clothed in action and nature.

Holiness is concealed within worldly processes during the week.

And in action all nations have a grasp, therefore holiness is not revealed.

The universal realm of action obscures Israel’s unique spiritual connection.

But Israel has a share above action, and this is the sign of Shabbat.

Shabbat connects Israel to a transcendent level beyond worldly doing.

Therefore it is written: “These are the things which God commanded to do.”

The command to “do” refers to work that is guided by higher, Shabbat-centered consciousness.

Even though Shabbat itself is a cessation from action.

The paradox highlights that only one who accesses the level beyond action can sanctify action.

But only one who has power above action can rectify action.

Holiness must come from beyond the realm it seeks to elevate.

Therefore Israel can act and rectify action, since they have a connection to Shabbat which is above action.

Israel’s work in the world is empowered by their Shabbat-rooted transcendence.

There are levels of action, speech, and thought.

Human expression operates on three interconnected planes.

And Israel possesses the power of speech.

Speech is their unique spiritual faculty.

And this is the meaning of “These are the words,” that through the power of speech they rule over action.

Israel’s sanctified speech allows them to elevate and govern worldly action.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat reveals Israel’s inherent unity and their connection to a realm beyond action. Through Moses and Torah, this higher level empowers them to sanctify and elevate worldly action, primarily through the unique spiritual power of speech.
