דאיתא יצרו של אדם מתגבר עליו בכל יום.
“For it is taught: a person’s inclination overpowers him every day.”
This connects Joseph’s test to the general principle that the evil inclination renews its challenge daily.
והטעם כשהקב"ה וב"ש מחדש בטובו בכל יום מעשה בראשית.
“And the reason is that when the Holy One, blessed be He, renews in His goodness each day the work of Creation...”
Daily divine renewal awakens parallel forces of challenge in the world.
ממילא נולד התגברות היצה"ר ג"כ.
“Automatically the strengthening of the evil inclination is also born.”
As holiness renews, so too does its counterforce.
וכל המסורה על ענין זה.
“And all the tradition regarding this matter…”
The Sefat Emet refers to several teachings that support this idea of daily spiritual tension.
ברוך ה' יום יום יעמס.
“‘Blessed is the Lord day by day; He burdens us.’”
The daily burden refers to the continual task of spiritual elevation.
ואהי' שעשועים יום יום.
“‘And I was His delight day by day.’”
God delights specifically in the daily human effort to choose good.
כי רצונו ית' שבנ"י יבררו בכל יום הטוב מרע.
“For His blessed will is that Israel should clarify each day the good from the evil.”
Daily spiritual discernment is the essence of our service.
והלא כ' בזה ג"כ יום.
“And behold, it also says regarding this the word ‘day.’”
The repetition emphasizes a structured spiritual cycle.
שהוא אור הצפון.
“Which is the hidden light.”
The ‘day’ hints to a concealed divine illumination.
וזוכין לו ע"י התגברות על היצה"ר.
“And one merits it through overcoming the evil inclination.”
The hidden light is accessed through struggle.
דיש ב' דרכים והם ענין רמ"ח מ"ע ושס"ה מל"ת.
“For there are two paths— the 248 positive commandments and the 365 prohibitions.”
These represent two modes of revealing divine light.
שיש דרך בהתגלות האור ע"י המצות.
“There is a way of revealing the light through the commandments.”
Positive actions actively draw holiness into the world.
ויש התגלות האור ע"י סור מרע.
“And there is a revelation of light through turning from evil.”
Avoiding wrongdoing also uncovers divine light.
והם בחי' ערב ובוקר.
“And these are the aspects of evening and morning.”
Evening symbolizes restraining evil; morning symbolizes positive revelation.
ומזה יש שעשועים לפניו ית'.
“And from this God has delight.”
God’s delight comes from the harmony of these two modes.
וב' אלו השפעות בשבת נעשין א'.
“And on Shabbat these two influences become one.”
Shabbat unifies the dual modes of revelation.
כמ"ש זכור ושמור בדבור אחד נאמרו הם בחי' מ"ע ומל"ת.
“As it is said: ‘Remember’ and ‘Guard’ were spoken in one utterance— they are the positive and negative commandments.”
Shabbat manifests perfect unity of action and restraint.
ובש"ק הכל בקדושה שא"צ לבוא ע"י בירור התערובות.
“And on Shabbat all is in holiness and does not require clarification from mixtures.”
Shabbat transcends the weekday struggle.
לכן בש"ק לא כתיב ערב.
“Therefore on Shabbat ‘evening’ is not written.”
No darkness or struggle is emphasized on Shabbat.
וכ' בפרשת המן והי' משנה על אשר ילקטו יום יום והוא כנ"ל.
“And it is written in the section about the manna: ‘It was double what they gathered day by day,’ which is as said above.”
The doubling reflects the unification of the two modes on Shabbat.
כמ"ש שני העומר לאחד.
“As it says: two omers for one.”
Two measures merge into one on Shabbat.
עומר הוא מדה.
“An omer is a measure.”
Each ‘measure’ reflects a type of divine influence.
וב' המדות בשבת מתיחדים כאחד.
“And the two measures on Shabbat unite as one.”
Shabbat harmonizes the dual spiritual currents.
שבשבת ב' הימים אחדות אחד.
“For on Shabbat the two ‘days’ are a single unity.”
Both evening and morning fuse in holiness.
מה שבכל יום צריכים לברר ב' אופנים הנ"ל.
“Whereas on weekdays one must clarify through the two aforementioned modes.”
Weekdays require active struggle and refinement.
והקדושה בשבת בהתגלות.
“But the holiness of Shabbat is in a state of revelation.”
No concealment interferes with divine light on Shabbat.
ובימי המעשה יש הסתר ומלחמות היצה"ר.
“And in the weekdays there is concealment and battles with the evil inclination.”
Human effort is necessary during the six days.
ואיתא בגדים שלבשתה שחרית לא לבשתה בין הערבים.
“And it is taught: the garments you wore in the morning you did not wear in the afternoon.”
This hints at shifting spiritual states throughout the day.
שלבשתה בין הערבים לא לבשתה ערבית כו'.
“And what you wore in the afternoon you did not wear in the evening.”
Different times require different spiritual tools.
ועל זה נתקן ג' מיני תפלות.
“And for this three kinds of prayers were instituted.”
Each prayer corresponds to a distinct phase of daily struggle.
מכלל שיש ג' זמנים ביום שצריכין להלחם עם הסט"א.
“From this we learn there are three times a day to battle the Other Side.”
Daily prayer is an act of spiritual warfare.
דחז"ל אמרו עבודה שבלב זו תפלה.
“For our sages said: ‘Service of the heart—that is prayer.’”
Prayer channels the inner emotional struggle toward God.
לעבדו בכל לבבכם כו'.
“‘To serve Him with all your heart,’ etc.”
This includes both inclinations.
והם ביצ"ט ויצה"ר כנ"ל.
“And these are with the good inclination and the evil inclination, as above.”
Both are engaged through prayer.
שהם הארות המתבררים ע"י המלחמה ומתלבשין בהסתרות.
“For they are lights clarified through battle and clothed in concealments.”
Through struggle, hidden spiritual lights become revealed.
כמו שרמזו שלבשתן ערבית שחרית כו'.
“As hinted in the teaching of garments worn in evening and morning.”
Each concealment has its own spiritual garment.
ואיתא בכל מקום שאתה מוצא גדר ערוה אתה מוצא קדושה.
“And it is taught: wherever you find a fence against immorality, you find holiness.”
A boundary itself becomes a channel for holiness.
והוא הארות קדושות שבאין ע"י גדר ערוה בחי' סור מרע.
“These are holy illuminations that come through the fence, the aspect of turning from evil.”
Restraint reveals unique lights.
ובש"ק כולו טוב ומלאך רע בע"כ עונה אמן.
“And on Shabbat all is good, and even the evil angel is compelled to answer ‘Amen.’”
On Shabbat all forces align with holiness.
ודוק ותשכח.
“Examine this and you will understand.”
