Messiah Beyond Human Understanding

Vayeshev · תרמ"ג (1882) · Essay 2

Mashiach · Judah and Joseph · Divine Providence · Redemption · Prayer

In the Midrash: “For I know the thoughts… all were occupied with their dwelling and their suffering.”

The Sefat Emet opens by showing that while the tribes were absorbed in their struggles, God perceived their inner intentions.

But the Holy One, blessed be He, was busy creating the light of the Messiah.

Human turmoil conceals divine preparation; redemption begins beyond human awareness.

The idea is that the Messiah comes “when the mind is turned away.”

Redemption arrives when human intellect does not grasp it.

Meaning: the final redemption is God’s salvation, not apprehended by human intellect.

Ultimate deliverance transcends human calculation.

And so the birth of the Messiah occurred when minds were turned away, for all were occupied with their anguish.

Suffering blinds people to the divine beginnings unfolding within it.

One must understand that surely the dispute of the tribes was for the sake of Heaven; therefore both Messiah son of Joseph and Messiah son of David were established.

Competing visions for leadership can both emerge from pure motives.

Each one held, according to his understanding, that kingship belonged to Judah or to Joseph.

Their disagreement reflected genuine spiritual insights.

And all of them intended for Heaven.

Even conflicting positions can be holy when motives are pure.

These and those are the words of the living God.

Multiple truths coexist in divine service.

And both aspects are necessary.

Israel’s redemption requires the paths of both Joseph and David.

Messiah son of Joseph begins, and Messiah son of David completes.

Initiation and fulfillment operate through different spiritual channels.

Therefore the order was such: first Joseph the righteous was concealed from them, and then Messiah son of David was born.

Loss of Joseph made room for the emergence of David’s line.

And the Holy One knows the thoughts; He saw everyone’s intent to find the truth.

God evaluates the heart even when human action falters.

And they fell into confusion in a matter impossible for humans to fulfill perfectly.

Human limitation produced conflict where purity of aim remained.

And God joined their good intention and created the light of the Messiah.

Divine redemption emerges from the sanctified inner intention of Israel.

We must understand that the tribes are the pillars of the world.

Their spiritual qualities uphold creation.

Just as there are three Patriarchs whose qualities sustain the world.

The tribes parallel the foundational roles of the Patriarchs.

So too the twelve tribes.

Each tribe embodies a sustaining attribute.

And corresponding to this were established the twelve middle blessings of the Amidah.

Prayer channels the spiritual structure of the tribes.

The Patriarchs are the aspect of arranging God’s praise.

They root the opening blessings of the Amidah.

The tribes correspond to the requests.

They express the multiplicity of human needs.

And these are unique matters renewed every day.

Spiritual channels of blessing constantly reopen.

For these are not incidental; they are pillars upon which all stands.

Daily renewal is structural, not accidental.

And God opens each day these pathways and gates: the gate of forgiveness, of healing, of repentance, of sustenance, etc.

He continuously provides access to renewal and blessing.

Therefore a blessing was fixed at the end of each request; if it were only a request, why a blessing? Rather, one must believe that each day God grants these blessings to the world, but it is through Israel that these paths are awakened.

Our prayers do not create blessing but activate its channels.

And behold: Judah corresponds to “Hear our voice.”

Judah represents the plea that rises upward.

As it is written: “Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah,” the aspect of David, the sweet singer of Israel.

David embodies prayer expressed as song.

And the aspect of Joseph is “His ruler shall be given to him.”

Joseph channels divine assistance and practical success.

But in truth, for all Israel, kingship belongs to Judah.

Judah holds ultimate sovereignty.

For in the end all require heavenly assistance.

Human effort culminates only through divine aid.

And this applies to every individual, as it is written: “Many thoughts are in a person’s heart, but the counsel of God will stand.”

Human planning is necessary, but God completes the work.

Meaning: a person must indeed plan his path in all traits to be aided in serving God.

Preparation and intention are essential.

But in the end God assists him.

Divine help is decisive.

And through all thoughts that are for Heaven, God’s counsel is ultimately fulfilled.

Pure intention aligns human effort with divine will.

And this is what is meant by “I know the thoughts.”

God evaluates intention, not merely outcome.

And Jacob our father and his sons had all their thoughts solely for Heaven.

Their conflict was rooted in holiness.

And when they reached the depth beyond human ability to proceed.

Human limitation reached its limit.

Then God joined with them and gave His power.

Divine intervention completes what humans cannot.

And elsewhere this matter of the dispute between Joseph and Judah is further explained.

The theme recurs throughout Sefat Emet.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the tribes’ dispute, though flawed in execution, was rooted in pure intention. God combined their holy thoughts to generate the light of the Messiah. The tribes and the Amidah’s requests mirror daily-renewed channels of blessing. Ultimately, human planning begins the process, but divine assistance completes it, as expressed through the dual paths of Joseph and Judah.
