Balanced Divine Attributes

“And Jacob dwelled in the land of his father’s sojournings”—the Zohar explains this as an expression of awe.
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the word “מגורי” is interpreted as “fear,” indicating that Jacob is now entering a mode associated with awe.
For the sages taught that each of the patriarchs embodied a distinct spiritual quality: Abraham embodied love and kindness.
Abraham is the paradigm of expansive, outward-flowing devotion, drawing others near through kindness.
And Isaac embodied awe and judgment.
Isaac represents contraction, inwardness, and the qualities of restraint and reverence.
And Jacob, peace be upon him, included both qualities.
Jacob integrates love and awe, harmonizing the opposing modes of his forefathers.
Therefore it is said that until now Jacob’s path followed the mode of loving-kindness, and thus he was in a state of “going,” as is said to Abraham: “Go forth.”
Jacob’s earlier journeys resembled Abraham’s expansive outreach, characterized by movement and outward flow.
For the spreading of holiness to draw near those who are distant occurs through love and kindness, beyond the letter of the law; through love, one can draw close even the distant, as it says: “You shall love the Lord”—that God’s name become beloved through you.
Love allows holiness to reach outward, awakening affection for the Divine even in those far removed.
But Isaac, who embodied awe and fear, was told: “Do not go down to Egypt.”
Because awe contracts rather than expands, Isaac is commanded to remain rooted and not to journey outward.
And while Jacob was pursued by Esau, he clung to the quality of Abraham.
In danger, Jacob relied on the expansive, protective force of love and kindness.
But now he began to enter the mode of his father’s awe.
With Esau no longer a threat, Jacob shifts from Abraham’s mode to Isaac’s inward-focused reverence.
And it is possible that therefore the turmoil concerning Joseph came upon him, as has been explained, for the quality of judgment cannot be completed alone—it can only prepare a person—while in the end it must be joined with the attribute of mercy.
The shift toward judgment introduces trials; pure judgment cannot stand by itself and must ultimately be balanced with mercy.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains Jacob’s transition from Abraham’s expansive love to Isaac’s restrictive awe, showing how this shift leads to the trials of Joseph and illustrating the necessity of balancing judgment with mercy.
