The Akeidah refines Avraham's chesed into Yaakov's truth

In the portion of the Akeidah: "And it was after these things, that Elokim tested Avraham."

The Sefas Emes opens with the verse introducing the binding of Yitzchak, where Hashem put Avraham to the test.

For Avraham Avinu was a man of chesed (lovingkindness), and he drew down kindnesses to the whole world and wished to bring all creatures close.

Avraham's whole essence was outflowing kindness — he sought to extend chesed everywhere and draw all of creation near to Hashem.

But the chesed began to spread out too much; therefore, after he made a covenant with Avimelech, Elokim tested him.

Unbounded chesed can overextend itself — his bris with the Philistine Avimelech showed kindness reaching where it should not, so Hashem brought the test of the Akeidah to contain it.

For it is taught that the middah of chesed is to spread out, while the middah of gevurah is to raise back to its root, as is said in the Zohar regarding "the waving of gold" and "he shall wave the leviim" — see there.

Chesed expands outward; gevurah (strength/restraint) lifts things back up to their source. The "waving" of the leviim symbolizes this upward gathering motion of gevurah.

And here Elokim tested ("nisah") and raised up Avraham, to restrain the excess of chesed and hold it back through the midas hadin (attribute of justice). This is what the Midrash says: "You gave to those who fear You a banner (nes)…" — "because of truth," to adorn the attribute of justice in the world.

The test "raised" Avraham like a banner, drawing his overflowing chesed back and balancing it with din. The Midrash reads "nes" as both "test" and "banner," lifting Avraham up to establish justice and truth ("koshet") in the world.

This is the root of the middah of Yaakov, as it is written: "Grant truth to Yaakov."

The balance of chesed with truth and justice is precisely the attribute of Yaakov, whose quality is emes (truth).

For the attribute of the Holy One, blessed be He, is "abundant in chesed and truth" — although chesed is "beyond the line of the law," nevertheless it is in truth, for one who genuinely merits the chesed.

Hashem's chesed is not arbitrary; it is paired with emes, given truthfully to one who is truly worthy of it, even though kindness goes beyond strict justice.

Therefore, when Avraham was grieved at the sending away of Yishmael, the Holy One, blessed be He, answered him: "Through Yitzchak shall offspring be called for you."

Avraham's chesed extended even to Yishmael, but Hashem told him the true line must pass through Yitzchak — chesed needed to be refined.

Meaning: your attribute of chesed must yet be clarified through Yitzchak, and from this would emerge Yaakov, who is chesed in truth.

Avraham's kindness had to be filtered through Yitzchak's din to produce Yaakov — chesed purified and balanced by truth.

Therefore it is written "Avraham, Avraham" — the first is not complete, the second is complete.

The repeated name (at the Akeidah) hints that the earlier Avraham was not yet whole, while the later Avraham, after the test, was complete.

For the chesed had been clarified and made true.

After the Akeidah, Avraham's chesed was purified and confirmed as authentic kindness.

And at the Akeidah, then Avraham's chesed was confirmed as true in its completeness; therefore it is written "And he saw the place from afar," which they expounded as referring to Yaakov, as it is written "And he encountered the place."

The shared word "makom (place)" links Avraham's vision at the Akeidah to Yaakov — Avraham "saw" Yaakov, the perfected chesed, off in the distance as the goal of the whole test.

For the entire Akeidah was to clarify the attribute of Yaakov, "because of truth, selah."

The ultimate purpose of the binding was to refine Avraham's chesed into the truthful, balanced middah of Yaakov — kindness wedded to truth.

Summary: Avraham's defining middah was chesed, which by nature spreads outward — and his kindness had begun to overextend (as in his covenant with Avimelech and his attachment to Yishmael). The Akeidah was the test of gevurah/din that "raised" his chesed back to its root, restraining and clarifying it. Its deeper purpose was to refine Avraham's kindness — through Yitzchak's din — into the perfected attribute of Yaakov: chesed wedded to truth, "because of truth, selah."
