Israel as Shabbos Boundary
“In the verse: ‘See… the Lord has given you the Sabbath…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on the wording that the Sabbath is a divine gift granted specifically to Israel.
As it is written: “And the Children of Israel shall guard the Sabbath.”
This guarding implies that the revelation of holiness on the Sabbath comes into the world for the sake of Israel.
Meaning: the manifestation of holiness on Shabbat is for the sake of Israel.
Shabbat’s sanctity is not abstract; it is directed toward Israel as the vessel capable of receiving it.
Therefore, Israel must guard the illumination of Shabbat.
Guarding means holding onto the spiritual light so that it does not dissipate.
And this is the spreading of the “canopy of peace” over us.
Shabbat casts a protective, peaceful covering over Israel.
Meaning: the Children of Israel enter beneath this canopy.
Israel steps into the sphere of holiness that Shabbat unfolds.
And they themselves become the partition that separates the holy, etc.
Israel serves as the boundary that keeps Shabbat’s sanctity from flowing outward in an unbounded way.
As stated in the Midrash: “A non‑Jew who keeps Shabbat is liable for death.”
This teaching expresses the idea that Shabbat’s holiness is not meant to extend beyond the unique covenant with Israel.
And as written elsewhere: the Children of Israel shall be Your partner, being uniquely designated to receive the flow of Shabbat’s holiness so that it does not spread outward.
Israel acts as the proper vessel and counterpart to divine sanctity, ensuring that Shabbat’s light remains contained and protected.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat’s holiness enters the world for Israel, who must guard and contain its light. By entering the canopy of Shabbat, Israel becomes the boundary that preserves its sanctity and prevents it from dispersing beyond its proper covenantal realm.
