Manna Preparing for Torah

Beshalach · תרל"ו (1875) · Essay 3

“Behold, I will rain down..., and the people shall go out and gather each day’s portion...”

This daily gathering of manna served as the initial preparation for receiving the Torah.

For this was a preparation for receiving the Torah.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the manna was not merely sustenance but spiritual conditioning for revelation.

As it is written: “In order to test them, whether they will walk in My Torah.”

The daily test of trust and dependence created readiness for higher obedience.

Meaning: The Torah was given only to those who ate the manna.

Only people elevated by the manna’s holiness were fit to receive Torah.

As explained: He fed us the manna, gave us the Sabbath, brought us to Sinai, and gave us the Torah.

These stages formed a ladder of sanctification leading to revelation.

All these were successive levels preparing Israel’s bodies to be sanctified through food eaten by angels.

The manna refined physicality, elevating the body to receive divine wisdom.

Thus, “bread from heaven.”

Heavenly bread signifies nourishment aligned with the soul’s celestial source.

For surely all nourishment and life flow from Heaven to the root of each soul.

Even earthly food ultimately derives from a higher spiritual origin.

But in this world it can be received only through many contractions, through growth from the earth and preparation of food.

Material processes dim the heavenly light within earthly sustenance.

But those truly sanctified can receive bread from Heaven as it is.

Holiness removes the filters, allowing direct spiritual nourishment.

This testified that they were ready to receive the Torah, since they could receive such food.

Being able to digest the manna proved their spiritual preparedness.

Nevertheless, now everything must be repaired through actual physicality.

After Sinai, the task shifted to sanctifying the material world itself.

But the giving of the Torah was possible only through an overpowering of holiness, almost like the manna itself.

The revelation required elevated conditions similar to the manna’s purity.

Thus it is said: The Torah was given only under such conditions.

The Torah required bodies refined by manna-level holiness.

“And they went out” means departing from this world, freeing themselves from worldly materiality.

Gathering manna required stepping beyond habitual physical consciousness.

“Each day’s portion” means attaching all daily conduct to the upper Source that governs all.

Daily reliance on manna trained them to link every action to God.

And each day governs all things done within it.

Every day carries its own divine influence and mission.

And they bound the conduct of each day to its root.

The people learned to connect daily life to divine origins.

This is “each day’s portion.”

The daily manna symbolized continual spiritual alignment.

Understand this.

The teaching calls for contemplation of daily divine connection.

The Sefat Emet explains that the manna refined Israel’s physical being, enabling them to receive the Torah. Daily gathering cultivated trust, detachment from materiality, and alignment of each day’s actions with their spiritual source.
