Unity and the Sanctity of Shabbat
Joseph · Shabbat · Unity · Blessing · Seven Cows
“Regarding the dream: seven cows of beautiful appearance… and they grazed in the marsh.”
The Sefat Emet begins by grounding the teaching in Pharaoh’s dream of the seven beautiful cows grazing peacefully.
“And in the Midrash: brotherhood and peace in the world.”
The Midrash links the image of the cows grazing together to a state of harmony and unity in the world.
“The hint is to the aspect of Joseph, who is peace, and to the aspect of Shabbat, which gathers the days into a single unity and therefore elevates everything to its root.”
Joseph represents the power of unification, similar to Shabbat, which draws all days into oneness and raises them to their spiritual source.
“Thus it says of Joseph: ‘At seventeen years old he was tending his brothers.’”
Joseph is described as shepherding his brothers, emphasizing his role as one who unifies others.
“But regarding the tribes it says: ‘to pasture the flock,’ and the Sages taught that the dotting on ‘et’ teaches that they were tending themselves.”
The tribes acted as individuals, not in full unity, highlighting their aspect of separateness.
“They were not in proper unity, for they are the aspect of particularity.”
The brothers represent multiplicity and detail, unlike Joseph’s integrative quality.
“So too the flow of blessing during the weekdays—each day receives on its own.”
Weekday blessing comes in separated, day‑by‑day measures, reflecting the aspect of particularity.
“And this is the hint from the seven cows that came after them, that they were not in brotherhood.”
The later cows symbolize the lack of unity and the fragmentation present in the weekday flow.
“But concerning Joseph it is written: ‘his brothers.’”
Joseph unites his brothers, expressing his harmonizing nature.
“Therefore the number seventeen is hinted.”
Seventeen hints to Joseph’s unifying capacity.
“Meaning: the seven must be unified through the first three.”
The Sefat Emet alludes to higher sefirotic structure: unity flows from the first three into the seven lower ones.
“For Shabbat is the light of the seven days.”
Shabbat provides the spiritual illumination that encompasses and elevates all days.
“And truly Shabbat prepares the flow of blessing also for the weekdays, as it says: from it all six days are blessed.”
Shabbat is the root-source from which weekday blessing emerges, even if it is not outwardly visible.
“But it is not revealed, as it is said that the manna did not fall on Shabbat, and on the contrary, the weekday prepares for Shabbat.”
The flow on Shabbat is concealed; external preparations appear to come from weekdays, though the spiritual root is reversed.
“And this is the hint in: ‘And it was not known when they came into their innards.’”
The hiddenness of the cows’ consumption symbolizes the concealed mode of Shabbat’s influence.
“But in truth, Shabbat sustains all the days.”
Despite its hiddenness, Shabbat underlies and supports the entire week.
“Thus it says of Joseph: ‘handsome in form and handsome in appearance,’ for the tzaddik is generous‑eyed, and through him all are blessed.”
Joseph’s beauty represents the tzaddik’s expansive generosity, through which blessing reaches all others.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph, like Shabbat, is the force of unity that elevates and blesses all particulars. Weekday multiplicity compares to the fragmented cows, while Shabbat and Joseph provide the hidden root that sustains and harmonizes the entire system.
