Spiritual Unity and Blessing

Vayechi · תרמ"ד (1883) · Essay 3

Jacob · Tribes of Israel · Divine Connection · Spiritual Roots · Blessing

“In the verse: ‘And Jacob called to his sons…’”

The Sefat Emet opens by analyzing the word “called,” which hints at spiritual gathering.

“For ‘calling’ is a term of drawing close and connecting, as it is written: ‘And one called to the other.’”

Calling is not merely verbal; it creates spiritual proximity and unity, as in the angels’ call to one another.

“And it is also a term of designation, as in ‘He called the light Day’; our sages explained: He assigned to light the commandments of the day.”

Calling also means appointing or assigning a role, as in God’s designation of light.

“And the idea is that Jacob gave each tribe its own designation.”

Jacob assigned each tribe its spiritual mission.

“And he showed each one its place and its connection within Jacob their father.”

Each tribe received clarity about how it is rooted in Jacob’s spiritual identity.

“For just as Jacob sustains all creation, as the sages said that his form is engraved beneath the Throne of Glory…”

Jacob embodies the archetypal human form that upholds creation.

“So too the tribes are pillars upon which the world stands.”

The tribes extend Jacob’s cosmic role; they are structural supports of the world.

“Thus it is written: ‘To God are the pillars of the earth, and upon them He set the world.’”

This verse alludes to the tribes as foundational pillars.

“And it is written: ‘To God is the eye of man.’”

This hints at the divine human form that Jacob represents.

“And all the tribes of Israel are the eye of man—Jacob’s form, whose beauty resembled that of Adam.”

The tribes together express the full Adamic form embodied by Jacob.

“And all the tribes are branches extending from this tree.”

Jacob is the trunk; the tribes are his living extensions.

“And it is written: ‘And this is what he spoke to them… and he blessed them.’”

The blessing is tied to the act of speaking and designating.

“It is possible to explain that the blessing came from this very quality.”

The blessing flowed from the quality of connection and designation.

“And by attaching them to this spiritual level, they received its blessing.”

Their connection to Jacob’s root enabled the blessing.

“This is what the sages hinted: where Jacob ended, Moses began.”

Jacob’s designation of the tribes continues into Moses’ blessings.

“Thus: ‘And this is what he spoke’—a term of appointment—refers to his assigning them this level, which is the kingship of Heaven.”

Jacob inducted them into divine service.

“And he blessed them with this quality, for within it lies the blessing.”

The blessing is inherent in their alignment with this spiritual root.

“We find regarding Joseph’s sons: Jacob said, ‘Bring them to me and I will bless them.’”

Closeness to Jacob is itself the channel of blessing.

“He brought them close to him, and automatically they were blessed.”

Spiritual proximity generates blessing.

“All the more so, the closer souls draw to their root, the more they receive blessing.”

Blessing flows from connection to the spiritual source.

“This is also the blessing of Shabbat, as it is written: ‘And He blessed the seventh day.’”

Shabbat is the archetype of elevation toward the root.

“Because Shabbat raises and draws all beings toward the root, they thereby receive blessing.”

Shabbat unifies creation with its source, releasing blessing.

Summary: Jacob’s calling of his sons was an act of drawing them close, appointing each tribe to its unique spiritual role rooted in Jacob’s cosmic form. By attaching them to this root, he transmitted blessing, a process mirrored in Moses’ blessings and in the nature of Shabbat, which elevates creation to its divine source.
