Hanukkah and Final Redemption
Hanukkah · Golden Calf · Redemption · Miracles · Tribes
It is stated in the Tur (Orach Chaim, laws of Rosh Chodesh) that it was originally prepared for all twelve months to be festivals, corresponding to the Three Festivals which align with the three Patriarchs, these twelve would have corresponded to the tribes, but due to the sin of the Golden Calf this was nullified.
The Sefat Emet explains that there was an initial divine plan for each month to have a festival rooted in the holiness of the tribes, but this potential was lost through the sin of the Golden Calf.
For the power of the Patriarchs is above nature.
The holidays tied to the Patriarchs manifest a transcendent holiness, not limited by natural order.
But the illumination of the festivals that were meant to correspond to the tribes was within the realm of nature, and therefore dependent on the righteousness of Israel.
Since the tribes represent holiness operating within nature, their festivals could be damaged by Israel’s sins.
The Maharal wrote in Ner Mitzvah that the decree of the Greek kings to write on the horn of the ox is an explicit reference to the sin of the Golden Calf.
Greece intentionally invoked the ancient failing of Israel, attempting to sever their spiritual root.
And it is written, “On the day that I visit, I will visit upon them their sin,” meaning this sin remains throughout the generations.
The impact of the Golden Calf echoes through history and reappears in times of judgment.
And in every moment of redemption, a portion of this sin is repaired.
Each salvation in Jewish history heals another layer of the primordial blemish.
This hints at the phrase “until the foot disappears from the marketplace,” based on the Midrash that in times of Israel’s suffering a leg is removed from the heavenly chariot.
Physical suffering below corresponds to a cosmic imbalance above, symbolized by the removal of a “leg” of the chariot.
Thus we must light the Chanukah lamp “until the foot disappears from the marketplace,” meaning until the Messianic time when this sin will be entirely removed.
The mitzvah of lighting persists as a symbolic act of repairing the blemish left by the Golden Calf.
For the Chanukah miracle is the final miracle, and through its power everything must be repaired until the final redemption arrives.
Chanukah provides the spiritual energy for the ultimate and complete rectification.
And the holiday of Chanukah is a reflection of the festivals once destined to come through the tribes, a weekday-type festival within nature.
Chanukah revives the lost potential of the tribe-based festivals.
And the very name “Chanukah” reflects this: for once they were redeemed from Greece, they merited their inheritance and were drawn close to holiness, and a new pathway was inaugurated to draw down divine illumination—therefore it is called Chanukah.
“Chanukah” signifies renewal: the re-dedication of Israel and the reopening of the channel of holiness.
Summary: The Sefat Emet links Chanukah to the unrealized festivals of the tribes, to the ongoing repair of the Golden Calf, and to the final redemption. Chanukah serves as a natural-world festival whose light repairs deep spiritual damage across generations.
