ענין קריאת פ' הנשיאים בחנוכה.
The matter of reading the section of the Princes during Chanuka.
This introduces why the Torah reading of the Nesi’im is connected to Chanuka.
דכתיב שבטי יה עדות לישראל.
As it is written: “The tribes of Yah are a testimony for Israel.”
The Sefat Emet explains that the tribes themselves serve as testimony to Israel’s divine connection.
פי' שהשבטים הם ראשונים המקבלים שפע קדושה ממלכות שמים דרך המיוחד לבנ"י כמ"ש שהם במקום י"ב גבולי אלכסון כמ"ש שנים עשר בקר והים עליהם מלמעלה כו'.
This means that the tribes are the first to receive holy influx from the Kingdom of Heaven, through the channel unique to Israel, as hinted in their position corresponding to the twelve diagonal boundaries, and as written regarding the twelve oxen that bore the Sea above them.
The tribes function as the primary conduits for divine flow into Israel, structurally aligned with symbolic heavenly configurations.
וע' בזוה"ק פרשת ויחי ע"פ שנים עשר וזאת אשר דיבר להם כו' איש אשר כברכתו כו'.
And see the Zohar, Parashat Vayechi, on “the twelve—this is what he spoke to them… each according to his blessing.”
The Zohar further emphasizes the individuality and root of each tribe within the unified whole.
והם דביקים בשורש האחדות.
And they are attached to the root of unity.
The tribes, though distinct, draw from a single divine source.
והשורש אשר עליהם ועמהם גי' אחד.
And the root that is upon them and with them equals “one.”
Their spiritual source is defined by the quality of divine oneness.
ולכן הביאו הנשיאים מיד בראשית השראת השכינה בישראל את קרבנם לחנוכת המזבח כי הבינו ועמדו א"ע במקום הראוי להם כי הם נשיאי מטות ישראל העומדים בראשית כח בני ישראל ונתקבל אז קרבנם בחיבה לפני הבורא ית'.
Therefore the Princes brought their offerings immediately at the beginning of the resting of the Shekhina in Israel, for they understood and stood in their proper place, being the heads of the tribes—the beginning of Israel’s spiritual power—and their offerings were received with affection before the Creator.
The Nesi’im acted from awareness of their foundational role, which made their offerings especially beloved.
וכתיב טוב אחרית דבר מראשיתו לכן זה כח הראשית משבטי יה לעולם נשאר.
And it is written: “Better is the end of a matter than its beginning,” and therefore this initial power from the tribes of Yah remains forever.
The first illumination of holiness continues to influence all future generations.
ובכל עת שיש קצת גאולה נתעורר כח הראשית הנ"ל כי השורש לעולם לא ימוט וזה עדות לישראל.
And whenever there is even a small redemption, that original power is awakened, for the root never falters, and this is a testimony for Israel.
Every redemption echoes the primal tribal holiness rooted in unity.
והנה כתיב ונהר יוצא מעדן כו' ומשם יפרד כו' לד' ראשים.
And it is written: “A river went out from Eden… and from there it separated into four heads.”
The Sefat Emet now turns to the symbolism of Eden’s river and its four divisions.
פי' במדרש נגד ד' מלכיות.
The Midrash explains that these correspond to the four exiles.
Each river symbolizes one of the four kingdoms that exiled Israel.
חדקל נגד יון חד וקל בגזירותיהם על ישראל כו'.
The Hiddekel corresponds to Greece—swift and light in their decrees against Israel.
The Greek exile was uniquely subtle and intellectual in its oppression.
כי כולם יש בהם קצת חיות ממלכותו ית' אבל הוא בפירוד.
For all of them have some life-force from His Kingdom, but in a state of separation.
Even the exilic powers contain sparks of divinity, but detached from unity.
ובנ"י בשורש האחדות הנ"ל להשקות את הגן.
But Israel, rooted in that unity, is meant to water the garden.
Israel channels divine unity into the world to sustain spiritual life.
וכתיב לעבדה ולשמרה ע"י המצות כו'.
And it is written: “to work it and to guard it,” through the commandments.
The mitzvot are the means by which Israel cultivates and guards the divine garden.
לכן כתיב כח מעשיו הגיד לעמו לתת להם נחלת גוים שיש לכל ד' מלכיות ג"כ נחלים הד' ראשים הנ"ל.
Therefore it is written: “He declared the power of His works to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations,” for each of the four kingdoms has its own stream—the four heads of the river.
Israel is shown the structure of divine governance so that it may ultimately inherit what the exilic powers temporarily hold.
אבל כל הנחלים הולכים אל הים.
But all the streams go to the sea.
All powers eventually return to their source in divine unity.
וכיון שבנ"י דבוקין בשורש.
And since Israel is attached to the root…
Israel’s connection to the source gives them ultimate endurance.
יורשין לבסוף אחר כל גאולה מד' גליות נחלה שלהם כמ"ש כי אתה תנחל בכל הגוים.
They ultimately inherit, after every redemption from the four exiles, their proper portion, as it is written: “For You shall make us inherit among all the nations.”
In the end, Israel receives its destined inheritance after the dispersions are resolved.
Summary: The tribes serve as the primary channels of divine unity into Israel, and their initial offerings at the dedication of the altar established a permanent spiritual root. This root awakens in every redemption. The four exiles correspond to the four rivers from Eden, each holding separated sparks of divine vitality, yet all ultimately returning to unity. Israel, attached to this unity, ultimately inherits after all exiles.
