Light from Darkness
Hanukkah · Miracles · Exile · Divine Kingship · Spiritual Growth
“One who sees a Chanukah light must recite a blessing.”
This teaches that the light of the Chanukah candles contains a residual illumination of the miracles, which itself warrants a blessing.
“For the radiance of the miracles remains in the candles.”
The candles are vessels through which the original divine light of the miracles continues to shine.
“And this light was gained by Israel after the darkness of the wicked Greek empire, as it is said: ‘The advantage of the light comes from the darkness.’”
Israel’s experience of oppression produced a heightened capacity to receive and reveal light.
“This teaches that through darkness there comes afterward an advantage of light when one is redeemed from it.”
The descent itself becomes the source of a greater spiritual ascent.
“As it is written: ‘In all sorrow there is gain.’”
Every struggle leaves behind a surplus of holiness and understanding.
“And this is the hint in: ‘From the remaining jars a miracle was done for the roses.’”
The remnant—the small leftover—becomes the point from which the miracle emerges.
“As it is said: ‘Do not look at the jar…’ for the jar is only a vessel and garment for the inner essence.”
The external form is insignificant; the true value lies in the hidden, inner divine light.
“And indeed it is written: ‘Your kingship is a kingship over all worlds.’”
God’s sovereignty permeates all existence, though not always visibly.
“But it is concealed in this world.”
In the physical world, divine rule appears hidden beneath layers of materiality.
“And through occasional miracles it becomes clear that all is from His kingship.”
Miracles break through the concealment and reveal the true source of all reality.
“And afterward there is an advantage specifically because of the prior concealment.”
The very hiddenness deepens the revelation that follows.
“And all these illuminations that are found mixed within the aspect of the four kingdoms, Israel takes through the exile when they are redeemed from it.”
Exile refines and extracts sparks of holiness embedded within the four empires, which Israel elevates upon redemption.
“And surely, just as this is true collectively, so it is true for each individual Israelite, who cannot accept the yoke of Heaven until he passes through these four kingdoms, which are forms of enslavement.”
Every person must face internal struggles that parallel the four exiles before reaching full spiritual sovereignty.
“He must overcome them to free his soul, so as not to be ruled by his heart in these matters; afterward he merits accepting the yoke of Heaven.”
Only by conquering internal impulses does one earn true spiritual freedom.
“Therefore on Chanukah we must renew the yoke of His kingship.”
Chanukah is a time to reaffirm divine sovereignty in our lives.
“And it is easier now to attain purity, as it is said: ‘The many were given into the hands of the few.’”
The victory of the few over the many shows that even a small point of holiness can overpower great resistance.
“For with even a small point, one can now overcome them, as mentioned above.”
The smallest spark of holy intention holds immense transformative power during Chanukah.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanukah light contains the residual illumination of the miracles. Darkness itself creates a greater capacity for light, and the miracles reveal God’s hidden kingship. Exile—both national and personal—extracts sparks of holiness, enabling renewed acceptance of the divine yoke. On Chanukah, even a small point of purity can overcome great forces of impurity.
