Redemption Through Divine Light
Hanukkah · Redemption · Divine Service · Greek Exile · Praise and Gratitude
The Sages made the miracle of the lights primary, even though there were many wonders in their battles when they emerged from under the hand of the Greek kingdom.
The Sefat Emet notes that although military victories were miraculous, the central focus is the spiritual miracle of the lights.
But the matter follows what is said—that they established [the festival] for praise and thanksgiving.
He explains that Chanuka’s essence is tied to hallel and hoda’ah.
Thanksgiving is for having emerged from under the hand of the wicked.
Hoda’ah expresses gratitude for liberation.
And praise is for having entered under the rule of the Kingdom of Heaven, as it says: “Praise, servants of the Lord, and not servants of Greece.”
Hallel celebrates renewed belonging to divine sovereignty.
The main joy must be that we left bondage so we could afterward receive the Kingdom of Heaven.
Freedom matters because it enables spiritual service.
Therefore, through the miracle of the lights, in which God drew us close with extra affection, we give praise for this.
The light symbolizes divine closeness after liberation.
As it says: “Afterward Your children came into the inner chamber of Your house.”
The return to the Temple expresses restored intimacy.
Meaning that we immediately returned to the proper level of being Israel, as it is written: “This people I formed for Myself—they shall tell My praise.”
Redemption reinstates Israel’s essential mission.
And only in exile are we unable to open the mouth in praise and thanks before Him, because we are bound by others.
Oppression stifles spiritual expression.
But once we are freed, we must open our mouths in praise and thanksgiving.
Freedom obligates vocal gratitude.
Therefore the sages made the lights the main remembrance, to show that the main joy of redemption is our merit in returning to dwell in the house of our God.
The lights highlight restored access to holiness.
The truth is that redemption corresponds to the merit of the generation.
Collective spiritual state determines the redemption’s form.
And without doubt, the main suffering of that generation in exile was their weakened spirit in serving God.
Spiritual decline pained them more than physical oppression.
Even though, without doubt, they were also enslaved physically.
Material suffering was real but secondary.
But it was written for us as a remembrance that they had Shabbat, circumcision, and the new month taken from them.
The decrees targeted core mitzvot.
For this was their main suffering.
Their anguish centered on spiritual loss.
Therefore they merited redemption in this manner, so that the light of redemption remained fixed, illuminating our eyes in Torah and service of God.
A spiritually focused generation earned a spiritually enduring redemption.
And from them we must learn in our exile now.
Their example guides our own spiritual priorities.
Even though our pains are many.
Physical and emotional suffering is great.
We must forget all else and lament only the diminishment of service to God.
Primary sorrow should be spiritual deficiency.
For according to the suffering of exile so will be the redemption, for exile is preparation for redemption, as said above.
The depth of exile shapes the height of redemption.
The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka centers on spiritual liberation, restored divine closeness, and the primacy of hallel and hoda’ah. The generation’s pain over lost mitzvot shaped a redemption that left a lasting spiritual light. We too must focus on the state of our service to God, for exile prepares the redemption.
