Inner Renewal and Purity
Chanukah · Inner Light · Spiritual Cleansing · Soul Renewal
“And they defiled all the oils in the Sanctuary.”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the defilement of the oil symbolizes spiritual damage in the inner faculties of a person.
“I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, that this hints at the thoughts within the mind.”
The Sefat Emet cites his grandfather, the Chidushei HaRim, who interprets the defiled oil as an allegory for impure or distorted thoughts.
“And it seems that in truth all is one, for the aspects of world, year, and soul depend on one another.”
He explains that the three dimensions—space, time, and the human soul—are interconnected and reflect one another.
“Just as in the world there are distinct places.”
The physical world has areas of varying sanctity.
“And the Temple is the innermost place.”
The Temple represents the deepest point of holiness within space.
“And the Sanctuary is even more inner.”
Within the Temple, the Heichal is an even more elevated inner chamber.
“So too in time there are special days.”
Just as space has gradations of holiness, time also has days of heightened sanctity.
“And similarly in the soul there are body, soul, and spirit, etc.”
The human being also contains multiple inner layers.
“And just as they breached the Sanctuary and defiled the oils, so too the Other Side overpowered the souls of Israel.”
The physical defilement of the Temple parallels spiritual harm inflicted upon the people’s inner purity.
“And likewise in time.”
Time itself also experienced a spiritual dimming during that era.
“Therefore, afterward, when the hearts of Israel were purified, they were granted renewal, as it is written: ‘Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.’”
The purification of the people restored inner spiritual freshness and a renewed divine spirit.
“For whenever a person purifies his heart, he is granted renewal in the spirit within him.”
This is a general principle: inner cleansing brings about spiritual rejuvenation.
“Therefore, after they were purified, they received renewal, and thus the festival is called Chanuka.”
The name ‘Chanuka’ alludes to a renewal or rededication that emerged from this purification.
“And everything depends on the souls of Israel; even though the Temple stood, the essential matter is human avodah.”
The true center of holiness is human spiritual labor, even more than the physical Temple.
“Therefore, in the ‘Al HaNissim’ prayer, the salvation of souls is mentioned first: ‘You delivered the mighty… a great salvation.’”
The order of the prayer emphasizes that inner spiritual rescue precedes material redemption.
“And afterward: ‘They came and purified Your Sanctuary,’ which is the repair of the world following the repair of the soul.”
Only once the soul is healed can the outer world be properly restored.
“Afterward they established the eight days of Chanuka, which correspond to the dimension of time (‘year’), as explained above.”
The establishment of the festival expresses the sanctification of time after the restoration of soul and space.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the defilement and subsequent renewal of Chanuka occur across all dimensions—space, time, and soul—each reflecting the others. Inner purification is the root from which all outer restoration flows.
