David’s Role in Praise
King David · Hallel · Hasmoneans · Gratitude · Divine Praise
“And regarding the fact that they instituted specifically Hallel and thanksgiving, one may say, following the Ramban and other commentators, that the Hasmoneans sinned in that they should have restored the monarchy to the House of David.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining why the Chanuka enactment centers on praise and thanksgiving, linking it to the idea that the Hasmoneans erred by not returning kingship to David’s line.
“Therefore it is possible that they themselves wished to give King David a share in this miracle.”
They sought, in some spiritual manner, to include David in the miracle, compensating for their earlier failure.
“And they sensed that from him they had help in nullifying the Greek kingdom.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the spiritual power of David aided them in defeating the Greeks.
“And it is known that King David is called the ‘Sweet Singer of Israel,’ and he planted within the hearts of Israel this very root of Hallel and thanksgiving.”
David established the inner capacity for song and gratitude in the Jewish soul.
“As it is written: ‘I will thank the Lord with all my heart.’”
David’s psalms express wholehearted praise, modeling it for all Israel.
“Meaning: when David sang, he took with him the hearts of all the people of Israel.”
His song elevated not only himself but the collective heart of the nation.
“As it is said: ‘And in the midst of the many I will praise Him’ — literally in their midst.”
David’s praise resonated within the people themselves.
“For he brought awakening into the hearts of all the people of Israel.”
His song created spiritual arousal among the people.
“As it is written: ‘And David blessed the Lord before the eyes of the entire assembly.’”
His blessing was visible and impactful to the whole nation.
“It should have said: ‘In the ears of the assembly,’ but rather, through his words he illuminated the eyes of the assembly, and they saw and understood that to God belong greatness, power, beauty, etc.”
David’s words opened their perception, enabling them to truly see divine greatness.
“And all this wording was clarified in actuality through the power of King David’s blessing.”
His blessing gave concrete form to these spiritual truths.
“For King David was not a private individual, and it is taught that he had nothing of his own.”
David’s identity was one of complete self‑nullification; he embodied the collective soul of Israel.
“And through this nullification he had the power to awaken all the hearts of Israel.”
His selflessness enabled him to inspire the entire nation.
“As the Sages said regarding his request ‘May I dwell in Your tent forever’ — that his words would leave an impression in the mouths of all Israel through his psalms in the Book of Tehillim.”
David’s psalms became eternal, shaping Jewish prayer through the generations.
The Sefat Emet explains that the Hasmoneans established Hallel and thanksgiving because David had embedded these qualities in Israel, and their miracle drew power from him. David’s humility and song awakened the hearts of the nation, making his praise eternal.
