בענין נס דנרות שהי' בחנוכה.
Concerning the miracle of the lights that occurred on Chanuka.
The Sefat Emet begins by framing the Chanuka miracle as a revelation of inner light.
דאיתא וחושך זה יון שהחשיכה עיניהם של ישראל.
As it is taught: “And darkness—that is Greece, which darkened the eyes of Israel.”
Greece is described as a spiritual darkness that obscured Israel’s perception.
דאיתא להשכיחם תורתך ולהעבירם מעל חוקי רצונך.
As it is said: they sought to make them forget Your Torah and remove them from the statutes of Your will.
The Greek goal was not merely political but to sever Israel from divine connection.
כי אור הוא רז ופנימיות התורה ומצות שהוא דביקות בהשי"ת.
For light is the secret and inner essence of Torah and mitzvot, which is cleaving to God.
Light here symbolizes the hidden, living core of Torah that binds one to God.
והם היונים רצו להשכיח העיקר.
And the Greeks wanted to cause them to forget the essential point.
The essence targeted by Greece was the inner divine dimension, not the outer form.
ומעט חכמה שהי' להם אמרו שאין בתורה רק חכמה בלבד.
And with the small portion of wisdom they possessed, they claimed that Torah contains only wisdom, nothing more.
Greek rationalism reduced Torah to mere intellect, denying its spiritual depth.
וזהו שהחשיכה עיניהם של ישראל שהוא הדעת והחכמה ועירבו בזה החושך.
This is what it means that they darkened the eyes of Israel—namely its knowledge and wisdom—and mixed darkness into it.
They corrupted Israel’s faculty of divine understanding by blending it with foreign concepts.
כאשר אמרו לפרש להם התורה יונית.
As when they demanded that the Torah be explained to them in Greek.
This requirement symbolized forcing Torah into a foreign intellectual framework.
ובאמת עי"ז באין לשכחה כי בפנימיות יש תמיד התחדשות.
But truly, through this one comes to forgetfulness, for in the inner dimension there is constant renewal.
Once Torah is stripped of its inner life, it loses its renewing force and is forgotten.
ולכן נעשה הנקמה בהם בנס דנרות שהאיר הפנימיות והסוד ובאין אל ההתחדשות.
Therefore vengeance upon them occurred through the miracle of the lights, which illuminated the inner and the secret, bringing one to renewal.
The Chanuka lights restore the hidden spiritual vitality that Greece sought to extinguish.
ולכך נקרא חנוכה.
And therefore it is called Chanuka.
The name itself reflects restoration and rededication of inner holiness.
ומסתמא הי' אז צדיקים גדולים שהבינו זאת החשכות והתערובות שעירבו היונים.
And certainly there were then great tzaddikim who understood this darkness and the mixture the Greeks introduced.
The spiritual leaders recognized the subtle corruption behind Greek influence.
וע"ז הוסד הפסוק קוה קויתי ה' ויט אלי כו'.
And regarding this the verse was established: “I intensely hoped for the Lord, and He inclined to me…”
Hope and endurance are necessary to withstand spiritual obscurity.
ויעלני מבור שאון מטיט היון שהוא התערובות הפסולת וחכמה חיצוניות בחכמת התורה.
And He lifted me from the pit of tumult, from the mire of “Yavan,” which is the mixture of waste and external wisdom within the wisdom of Torah.
“Mire” symbolizes the contamination of Torah with external, superficial intellect.
ואח"כ כשעזר להם ה' ויתן בפי שיר חדש כו'.
And afterward, when God helped them, He placed in my mouth a new song.
Divine aid restores the capacity for renewed spiritual expression.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Greek influence sought to sever Israel from the inner, renewing light of Torah. Chanuka’s miracle reawakened this inner illumination, purifying Torah from foreign mixture and restoring divine renewal.
