קבעום ועשאום יו"ט בהלל והודאה.
“They established and made them a festival with Hallel and thanksgiving.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the Sages fixed Chanuka as a holiday defined specifically by praise and gratitude.
כבר כתבנו פי' קבעום בשמים ועשאום למטה.
We have already written that “they established them above in heaven, and made them below on earth.”
He teaches that the essence of Chanuka is rooted in a heavenly decree, which Israel then enacts in the physical world.
וזהו הלל והודאה.
And this is the meaning of Hallel and thanksgiving.
Hallel corresponds to the upper, spiritual aspect; thanksgiving corresponds to its manifestation below.
כי לא בכל עת יכולין לומר הלל כדאיתא בגמ' האומר הלל בכל יום כאלו מחרף ומגדף
For one cannot recite Hallel at all times, as the Gemara says: one who says Hallel every day is as one who blasphemes and reviles.
Hallel belongs only to specific moments when a heavenly gate opens; forced praise becomes spiritually inappropriate.
רק שבעת הזאת נפתח השערים בשמים ויכולין לומר הלל.
Only at this time are the gates in heaven opened, and one can recite Hallel.
Chanuka is one of the rare periods when Divine illumination is accessible, enabling true Hallel.
והודאה הוא על הישועה שלמטה בארץ.
And thanksgiving is for the salvation that occurred below, on earth.
Hoda’ah acknowledges the visible, worldly aspect of the miracle.
וכ' נר לרגלי דבריך ואור לנתיבתי.
As it is written: “A lamp for my feet is Your word, and a light for my path.”
This verse gives a model for the two levels: lamp below, light above.
פי' כי הנהגת השי"ת העיקר למעלה אעפ"כ בני ישראל זוכין להרגיש גם למטה בכל עת שמתחדש למעלה איזה הנהגה.
The explanation: God’s primary governance is above, yet Israel merits to sense below whenever a new form of governance is renewed above.
Even though Divine action begins in the supernal realms, Israel can feel its echo in earthly events.
וזהו נר לרגלי דבריך הנהגה שלך אבל עיקר האור לנתיבתי הם הנתיבות והדרכים שיש לשורשן של בני ישראל למעלה
And this is “a lamp for my feet is Your word”—Your guidance below; but the main “light for my path” refers to the supernal pathways belonging to the root of Israel above.
The lamp symbolizes the earthly experience of Divine guidance; the light represents Israel’s higher spiritual channels.
והישועה שלמטה היא רק כלי ונר להיות מכוון להאור שלמעלה שבנ"י הם הכלים שעל ידם הקב"ה פועל ישועות למעלה.
And the salvation below is only a vessel and a lamp aligned to the light above, for Israel are the vessels through which God performs salvations above.
The physical miracle is not the essence; it is a conduit that allows Israel to connect to and activate higher salvations.
ולמטה נקרא נר.
And below it is called a lamp.
The lower realm receives only the lamp-like glimmer of the higher light.
