בענין שם חנוכה ואיתא דהי' אז חנוכת המזבח.
Regarding the name Chanuka, it is taught that it was then the dedication of the altar.
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the very name “Chanuka” reflects a rededication of the Temple altar.
והענין הוא דדרשו חז"ל ובאו בה פרוצים וחיללוה כיון שבאו בה פרוצים נעשית חולין.
The idea is what our Sages expounded: “The lawless entered it and defiled it; once the impure entered, it became profane.”
The profanation by the Greeks transformed the altar from holy to mundane.
דבודאי כששיקצו מלכי יון ימ"ש המזבח לע"ז.
For certainly, when the wicked Greek kings defiled the altar for idolatry,
The altar was intentionally corrupted for idolatrous use.
בודאי נסתלקה השכינה וכמו כן האש שירד מן השמים כדאמרינן ביומא דבבית שני נמי הוי אש מן השמים רק סיוע לא מסייע ע"ש.
surely the Divine Presence departed, and likewise the heavenly fire, as we say in Yoma that even in the Second Temple there was heavenly fire, but it did not assist fully.
Both the Shechinah and the supernatural fire ceased when the Temple became defiled.
ונסתלק אז.
And it departed then.
The withdrawal was complete at the time of Greek desecration.
א"כ אח"כ כשנעשה הנס בודאי חזר האש בנס דנרות וחזרה הקדושה למקומה ונתחנך הבית.
Therefore afterward, when the miracle occurred, surely the fire returned through the miracle of the lights, and holiness returned to its place, and the House was rededicated.
The miracle of the oil signified the renewal of heavenly fire and restored sanctity.
וכמו כן ממש בנפשות בנ"י דעיקר המקדש הוא אות על אור הקדושה שבנפשות בני ישראל כדדרשו חז"ל ושכנתי בתוכו לא נאמר רק בתוכם.
And so it is with the souls of Israel, for the essence of the Temple is a sign of the light of holiness within their souls, as our Sages taught: “I shall dwell not in it, but within them.”
The physical Temple mirrors the inner sanctuary of every Jew.
והיונים טמאו נפשות בנ"י ואח"כ נעשו כברי' חדשה.
The Greeks defiled the souls of Israel, and afterward they became like a new creation.
After spiritual defilement, Chanuka brought renewal and rebirth.
וכתיב ועם נברא יהלל כי בודאי לא לחנם קבעוהו בהלל והודאה רק לשנה הרגישו בנפשותם הארת הקדושה ונתמלא פיהם שירות ותשבחות דכ' עם זו יצרתי לי תהלתי יספרו.
And it is written, “And a newly created people will praise Hashem,” for they surely established the festival for praise and thanksgiving not without reason; for that year they felt within their souls the radiance of holiness, and their mouths filled with song, as it is written: “This people I have formed for Myself—they will recount My praise.”
The inner spiritual illumination of Chanuka awakened gratitude and song.
לכן בכל עת שנפשות בנ"י מתבררין ונבדלין מתערובות האומות ונעשין מיוחדין לעבודתו ית' הם מספרים כבודו ית'.
Therefore, whenever the souls of Israel are clarified and separated from the mixture of the nations, becoming dedicated to His service, they recount His glory.
Spiritual distinction naturally leads to praise of God.
אח"ז מצאתי ביוסיפון כי בא להם אש עפ"י נס:
Afterward I found in Josippon that fire came to them by miracle.
This historical note supports the idea that miraculous fire returned during Chanuka.
