לשנה אחרת קבעום ועשאום י"ט בהלל דכתיב הללו עבדי ה'.

“The following year they established them and made them festival days with Hallel, as it is written: ‘Praise, servants of the Lord.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that the essence of Chanuka is expressed through Hallel, which reflects Israel’s renewed identity as servants of God.

כי מי שמקבל באמת עול מלכותו ית"ש הוא מלא שירה וזמרה.

For one who truly accepts the yoke of His blessed kingship is filled with song and praise.

Authentic submission to God naturally brings forth spiritual joy and song.

לכן הלל גי' שם אדנ"י.

Therefore, “Hallel” has the same numerical value as the Name Adonai.

The act of praise aligns a person with the Divine Name expressing God’s rule.

ולכן בשנה אחרת שיצאו מתחת ידי עבדי יון ונעשו עבדי ה' הרגישו שמחה בנפשותם.

Thus, in the following year, when they emerged from under the hands of the servants of Greece and became servants of God, they felt joy in their souls.

The inner joy arose because their spiritual identity was restored.

ולכן לא קבעוהו למשתה ושמחה כי השמחה בימים אלו מתוך עבדות ה' בלבד.

Therefore they did not establish it as a festival of feasting and merriment, for the joy of these days comes solely from serving God.

The nature of Chanuka joy is spiritual, not physical.

ותקנו המצוה בנרות ע"ש נר מצוה כי ביטלו היונים אותם מכל המצות.

And they instituted the mitzvah with lights on account of “a mitzvah is a lamp,” since the Greeks abolished them from all the commandments.

The candles symbolize the restoration of the mitzvot that Greece sought to suppress.

והמצות הם בעשי'.

And the commandments are in action.

Mitzvot manifest primarily through concrete deeds.

נר מצוה תורה אור דרך חיים תוכחות מוסר הם שלש עיקרי עבודת האדם.

“A mitzvah is a lamp, Torah is light, and the path of life is moral discipline”—these are the three foundations of human service.

They correspond to deed, speech, and thought.

בדיבור ומעשה ומחשבה.

In speech, deed, and thought.

These three dimensions encompass all spiritual work.

תורה אור ומצות במעשה נק' נרות.

Torah is light, and mitzvot in action are called lamps.

The candles embody the active fulfillment of mitzvot.

ודרך חיים הם המדות טובות שנקבעו בנפשות בני ישראל.

And the “path of life” refers to the good traits implanted in the souls of Israel.

Ethical character is foundational to Divine service.

ועתה הישועה במצות במעשה בפרהסיא.

And now the salvation came through public fulfillment of mitzvot in action.

The miracle enabled mitzvah performance openly.

וזהו פרסומי ניסא.

And this is the publicizing of the miracle.

The light proclaims restored religious freedom.

ובודאי דור ההוא היו עובדי ה' באמת והיו מצירים מאוד מביטול המצות כמ"ש עמדת להם בעת צרתם.

Surely that generation were true servants of God and were deeply distressed by the nullification of the mitzvot, as it says: “You stood by them in their distress.”

Their anguish stemmed from spiritual deprivation.

רבת. דנת. נקמת.

“You championed, You judged, You avenged.”

Each phrase describes God responding to their suffering.

שהי' נוגע להם מניעות המצות עד הנפש.

For the hindrance of the mitzvot touched their very souls.

The deprivation cut to their essence.

ומסרו נפשם באמת כדאיתא מה לך יוצא לסקול על ששמרתי את השבת שמלתי את בני.

And they truly gave over their lives, as it says: “Why do you go out to be stoned? Because I kept Shabbat, because I circumcised my son.”

Their self‑sacrifice was literal and uncompromising.

ולכן עשה להם הקב"ה נסים שיוכלו לקיים המצות.

Therefore the Holy One performed miracles for them so they could fulfill the mitzvot.

The miracles served the purpose of enabling religious practice.

דלכאורה קשה אונס רחמנא פטרי' ומה הי' צריך לעשות להם נסים.

At first glance this is difficult: Scripture exempts one who is coerced—why was there need for miracles?

Legally they were exempt, yet God intervened.

רק שהיה נוגע להם עד הנפש.

But it touched their souls.

Their inner yearning for mitzvot warranted miracles.

וכמו שהי' חביב בעיניהם מצות השי"ת כך הי' חביב לפניו ית' קיום מצותם.

And just as God’s commandments were precious to them, so was their fulfillment precious before Him.

Their devotion elicited Divine affection.

ועשה להם נסים שיוכלו לעשות לפניו ית' המצות.

And He performed miracles so they could do the mitzvot before Him.

Miracles served as a means to restore service.

והימים שנקבעו לימים טובים הם ישועה לדורות כי יש לנו לידע מה שהרשעים עתה מניחין לנו במצותינו.

The days established as festivals are salvations for generations, for we must know that the evildoers who now leave us our mitzvot do so through the merit of that generation.

Chanuka’s miracles protect future observance.

הוא בכח שפעלו הדור ההוא.

It is through the power that generation effected.

Their merit safeguards us still.

כי הקב"ה מכין רפואה קודם המכה.

For the Holy One prepares the remedy before the blow.

Salvation is pre‑planted.

וח"ו עתה לא הי' לנו תקומה בגזירות כאלו ה' ישמרנו.

And Heaven forbid, we would have no standing against such decrees today—may God protect us.

The Sefat Emet stresses our spiritual fragility.

רק שדור ההוא הי' מוכן להיות נושעים עפ"י נס.

But that generation was prepared to be saved through a miracle.

Their readiness made miracles possible.

לכן אומרים בימי מתתיהו כשעמדה כו'.

Therefore we say: “In the days of Mattityahu, when the enemy rose up…”

The liturgy emphasizes their role.

והלא מקודם היו הגזירות.

But behold, the decrees existed earlier.

The crisis predated the revolt.

רק כל הגזירות היו מצד שמתתיהו ובניו היו מוכנים להיות הישועה על ידם.

Only all the decrees were in place so that Mattityahu and his sons would be ready to bring salvation through them.

Their preparedness transformed history.

ודוק כי קצרתי.

And investigate this, for I have been brief.

The Sefat Emet signals further depth beyond his words.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanuka celebrates the restoration of Jewish spiritual identity, expressed through Hallel and the mitzvah‑lights. The miracles occurred because that generation’s yearning for mitzvot reached the soul’s core, and their merit continues to safeguard Israel’s observance across generations.
