Hanukkah and Hearing the Divine

Chanukah · תרמ"ח (1887) · Essay 2

Hanukkah · Devotion · Divine Service · Spiritual Awakening · Listening to God

Concerning the mitzvah of placing the Chanuka light at the entrance.

The Sefat Emet begins by framing the location of the Chanuka light as spiritually symbolic—the doorway represents transition and revelation.

And regarding “mehadrin” and “mehadrin min hamehadrin.”

He introduces the idea that the enhanced forms of the mitzvah express higher levels of spiritual receptivity.

For surely in these days the gates of understanding and holiness open, but only according to a person’s lifelong striving to yearn to hear the word of God, as it is said: “Happy is the person who listens to Me, watching daily at My doors”; and then, when such days arrive, one can receive these illuminations.

The Chanuka lights provide spiritual openings, but one receives them only to the extent that one has prepared oneself through persistent yearning to hear God’s voice.

And “mehadrin min hamehadrin” corresponds to what the Sages taught: “a door within a door.”

The highest beautification of the mitzvah reflects deeper inner doors of holiness accessible to those who refine themselves further.

And elsewhere I wrote, as we find regarding the bondman whose ear is pierced—that he has acquired a master for himself; therefore it is done at the door, where witnesses first heard God declare: “They are My servants,” etc.

The Sefat Emet links Chanuka to the symbolism of the pierced ear: the doorway recalls the moment God proclaimed Israel His servants.

So too now, when Israel merited to emerge from under a foreign master and enter again into being servants of God, the Holy One established for us a testimony upon the doorway.

The placement of the Chanuka light at the doorway testifies to renewed loyalty to God after liberation from foreign domination.

And there is the mitzvah of piercing the ear and impairing hearing, because according to one’s acceptance of His kingship, so does one merit to hear the voice of Torah.

Hearing Torah depends on one’s submission to divine kingship; refusing God dulls hearing, while devotion sharpens it.

And this is the hint: the mezuzah on the right, which contains “Shema Yisrael,” and the Chanuka light on the left—showing that we have entered into being servants of God and are prepared to hear Him and watch at His doors.

The doorway flanked by mezuzah and Chanuka light symbolizes total readiness to hear God’s word.

Since removing the yoke of Heaven damages hearing, all the more—by the greater measure of good—that by entering into being God’s servants one merits to hear the word of God.

Restoring divine sovereignty in one’s life restores and magnifies spiritual hearing.

And may God grant that the merit of Chanuka help us fulfill within ourselves the verse “They are My servants—My document comes first,” to remove from upon us the yoke of wicked rule, speedily; so may it be His will, blessed be He.

The passage ends with a prayer that Chanuka empower us to cast off oppressive forces and reaffirm our divine service.

Summary: The Chanuka lights at the doorway symbolize renewed devotion to God, heightened spiritual hearing, and access to deeper gates of holiness opened in these days for those who seek His word.
